  1. Do Rankings Affect Our Opinions of Cities? http://www.theatlanticcities.com/arts-and-lifestyle/2012/01/do-rankings-affect-our-opinions-cities/883/ Haven't gotten to do more than skim it yet, but seems interesting thus far.

I agree with C-Dawg, communication is a lost art for (the tail end of) our generation and the one following ours.
  3. The Bengals are definitely an up-and-coming team, but they benefited a bit from a soft schedule this year due to finishing last in the division last year and playing the NFC West/AFC South. Next year their schedule will be markedly more difficult and I wouldn't count and having such an easy time obtaining a wild card spot if I were a Bengals fan. Long-term though, the franchise has set itself up nicely.
  4. I don't think Columbus had a "minority seat" from 2000-2010.
  5. Melt could definitely use OT's services (or Melt should simply do something similar themselves). Even at the eastside location which is supposed to be better equipped to handle the volume, the wait is far too long.

Irving may have scored 14 points, but again he missed a lot of shots and had something like half a dozen turnovers. If anyone was trying to play up last night's game as a Kyrie-Ricky matchup, they had to have been disappointed.
  7. New or not, it' still incredibly extreme (perhaps more so than any previous map), incredibly un-democratic, and incredibly unrepresentative of our state. So the ceiling for the Democrats was a "fair" map (which would still likely favor Republicans), yet they failed, so that makes it acceptable for the Republicans to draw a ridiculous one? I've been doing some reading on redistricting and gerrymandering and there are some arguments to be made that certain provisions of the VRA actually make it easier for Republicans to draw themselves these types of advantages in many states like Ohio.
  8. So is my understanding correct that any kind of a referendum vote is now dead? More than embarrassing, this goes completely against what our country is built upon. I can't believe enough Democrats in the statehouse agreed to this to save a few seats of power for themselves/minorities. This is bad. Real bad.
  9. I'm cautiously optimistic about the idea, but I don't want our resources to be lining the pockets of some Texans sitting comfortably in Houston far from the environmental risks. This needs to be an Ohio-centric process.
  10. Our community could desperately use this revenue--why can't the people running things in Cowtown recognize this? Just another example of them being out-of-touch with Cleveland issues and putting their thumb on us.
  11. If we're going to give up the goods so easily, it would be nice if they at least bought us dinner first (i.e. I'd like to see a few energy companies like Chesapeake and others move their headquarters here or at the very least give us large branch offices with some white collar jobs as well). I know at least one has done so already, but I'd like to see several more. This isn't really about denying an economic opportunity to citizens in the poorest parts of the state. This is about making sure that they're not being exploited. What's the point in having a decent-paying job if 15-20 years down the road you and your family are going to develop serious illnesses because the water and other natural resources in your environment are contaminated? What's the point in allowing these out-of-state (and out-of-country) companies to come in and steal our resources while paying our residents beans and leaving the bill for the negative externalities for Ohio taxpayers. If this is as lucrative as some are speculating, then we have to make sure it's done right. Look at how long we've been doing coal mining and the process is still far from perfect and employees are still taken advantage of.
  12. More evidence of bipolar disorder from Forbes.
  13. Agreed. FitzGerald has governed the county like I was hoping the guy I voted for (Lanci) would, so I can't complain much anymore.
  14. Well maybe not downtown, but it seems like there would be plenty of space for a headquarters/plant complex for a few manufacturing companies in, say Midtown Cleveland.

I can't watch anything NBA-related other than Cavs coverage/games. Anyways, Hts, thanks for pointing out and reminding me that Irving and Thompson have only been playing about 20-25 minutes a game each. Why is that the case? Conditioning? I'd like to see them bump it up to around 35 minutes a game by the end of the season.
  16. I'm actually warming up to FitzGerald a bit. He did an interview with PBS a few weeks back and I was really impressed with the way he talked about regionalism. Hopefully he follows through with his work there and then maybe in a few years runs against Kasich. It would be nice to have one of "our guys" back in the governor's mansion.
  17. Never mind, I'm slow sometimes.
  18. There's a substantial amount of trickle-down money involved in this too. Most eastern Ohio landowners aren't in the 1%, plus there's all the blue-collar spinoff work. I do, however, draw the line at earthquakes. Luckily our state government does too. I hope there's a way to prevent that aspect going forward, because I would hate to see so much economic potential fizzle. Anybody seen the movie Nothing But Trouble, the one about Valkanvania? Which side of the line is contaminated drinking water on for you?
  19. That may be part of it, sure, but we're talking about lines on a map here and this was where the open space was. About 20-25 years ago that part of "Beachwood" was unincorporated Warrensville Township. Generally speaking, the "cost of doing business" does tend to be less in the newer sprawlburbs than in the inner-ring suburbs for a lot of reasons beyond the latter's control. Older, more developed infrastructure will have that effect. That does not mean that these cities should be forsaken. The idea of "lines on a map" determining which residents in a region are taken care of and which residents suffer is a bit silly if you truly stop to think about it; Beachwood is doing nothing spectacular here beyond being in the right place at the right time. And the residents share no burden of having these businesses located "within their city limits" because they are pushed up against the city's borders isolated from the residential areas. The revenues generated by Eaton being located in that area should be split and shared--at the very least--with all five of the cities that have ties to the Chagrin Highlands. Speaking of freeways, we all paid for the construction of the three Beachwood interchanges and we're all still paying for their maintenance. The City of Beachwood, which reaps the rewards that these interchanges bring in allowing workers and customers from around the region to easily access Beachwood businesses, bears little to no financial responsibility for the freeways/interchanges. In other words, Beachwood likes regionalism when it's to their benefit, but otherwise? Forget it.

Yeah, we were talking about Oregon, but I'm not sure why The Decemberists were the first band you thought of being from there. I believe that there are a lot of good "indie" bands from that neck of the woods. The King is Dead is a great record.
  21. Now I was wondering if that firing had something to do with Luck and Manning. Man it would be great if they didn't take him and it shook up the top of the board a bit.
  22. Yes, this is the Beachwood JEDD. There's actually two of them in Beachwood (East and West), and I believe this is the Beachwood East JEDD. What's that mean, exactly? Also, I have to ask, are they saving any of that land for Figgie International? This is important.

I want to keep Sessions around. I want to see them go out and get something nice for Boobie and Andy. Much as I really like those guys and their commitment to this franchise, I agree, I don't see how they fit into the long-term rebuilding plan. This team needs to somehow get a big scoring threat. I really wish that Danny Granger trade rumor from last year was true.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that Thompson and Irving can grow together and support each other for a long time, and one player's strengths can compensate for the other's weaknesses. Fair enough. I like TT a lot, but I don't want to set expectations too high because I'm not sure he's going to live up to fourth pick of the draft quality.
