  1. Yeah when I wrote that the stat geeks on Yappi were saying that there was a 99% chance of Heights playing Boardman. Obviously some things changed and Heights is going to have their hands full with a big, talented, well-coached St. Edward squad. I knew that if they made the playoffs they were going to have a tough matchup regardless, so what the heck, they've got nothing to lose here, hopefully they can go out there and give the Eagles all they can handle!

I only skimmed your post, but it sounds like you had the same experience with Florida that I had with Arizona a few years ago. Welcome back!
  3. Looks like Heights will be hosting Boardman (from out Youngstown way). I think that South will host the loser of the Holy War (the winner gets to play/host Solon). Cleveland JFK will come calling on Mentor. The big question about Heights' first-round matchup is whether they'll play the game at Hosford Stadium or move it to a turf field, most likely Bedford.
  4. Heights beats Maple 20-12 to win the LEL crown and likely host a first round playoff game next week. Way to go Tigers!
  5. Were you there in 1997? Just curious. Anyways, you're wrong on Elyria. I think the confusion comes from the fact that Heights and Elyria played in 1996. http://web.archive.org/web/20000301130212/http://www.sunnews.com/ Also, your list of 1996 LEL members is missing Warrensville Heights and Parma.
  6. I don't think this is right. I'm fairly certain that Elyria didn't join the LEL until 1997. They played in a league with Admiral King and other Lorain County schools (of various sizes) before that. Heights and Elyria did however play a few times before the Panthers joined the LEL.
  7. Ha, I was going to say, egg-based dishes make up 75% of their menu anyways!
  8. University Heights hasn't done much better...after all we have a McDonald's going up right around the corner. Maybe, but I don't know that any grand design was ever sold to us. Regardless, we've got O'Rielly's on our side. #TrumpCard

So what? Hyundai has plants in North America. :shoot:
  10. What a waste. But I guess I should have moderated my expectations considering this is South Euclid we're talking about.
  11. What is the building currently being used for? It's basically sitting right next to the new VA hospital addition. It almost looks like there is a pedestrian walkway (ground level) connecting the two buildings.
  12. Nordonia rings a bell, too. I think at one point the GCC had nine schools.
  13. My understanding is that it was a clerical error that Heights missed, but someone (or people) at Maple knew about, but sat on until almost the end of the season. Had it been reported earlier, Heights would still have had a shot at the postseason. Also worth noting that the OHSAA went back and changed the rules so if the same thing happened today it would not result in forfeiture of games.
  14. Here's my understanding of the Lake Erie League: The original LEL was Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Shaw, and...University School. U.S. dropped out pretty quickly and schools like Parma, Lakewood, and Euclid were soon added. Berea and Midpark were also in the league in the 30s or 40s. I think in the 1950s league membership stablized with Cleveland Heights, Euclid, Lakewood, Parma, Shaker Heights, and Shaw. Brush was also in the LEL at some point there, too. Lorain and/or Elyria may have been in the league for a bit during the postwar years, but not for an extended period of time. In the 1960s Garfield Heights and Valley Forge were added to get league membership up to 8. I think that Euclid left for a while before returning in the 1990s. I don't know much about the GCC, but I didn't think that there were Lorain County schools in the league. But I was talking about the old LEL Lake Division from the late 1990s-early 2000s. That consisted of Cleveland Heights, Elyria, Euclid, Lakewood, Mentor, Shaker Heights, and Valley Forge. Shaker Heights was a dominant force back then.
  15. Interesting/troubling story in the Plain Dealer today about the crime reporting situation in Cleveland Heights: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/10/public_misled_on_cleveland_hei.html With the Coventry situation over the past summer (and the closing of the suburban crime thread), the Josh Cribbs parking ticket story, and now this (amongst other stories), I think that CH probably deserves its own crime and safety thread.
  16. I think that WGH's membership in the LEL is fluid. They're kind of a geographic oddball in the LEL and I think they'll move elsewhere if the right opportunity presents itself. Also, if the NOC loses another member or two (possible, for instance, if/when the Parma School District moves from three to two high schools), I suspect that Euclid and Cleveland Heights will be high on their list as replacements. Ultimately I think one of two things are going to happen with the LEL and it will depend on the NOC. First, the NOC breaks up and the schools move in three directions towards more geographically-based conferences. If that happens, a lot of the former LEL schools now in the NOC (plus Solon, Brush, Mayfield, etc.) may look to get back in the LEL or form a league with a lot of the current LEL schools. Second, the LEL will outright merge with the NOC, which will now become a four-division superconference. I kind of miss the days of the old LEL Lake with Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Euclid, Mentor, Lakewood, Elyria and one of the Parma high schools (I believe Valley Forge). That was a heck of a league.
  17. Regardless of what happens next week, Heights will be making the playoffs for what I believe to be the first time ever. But they will also have a chance to win their first LEL title in at least two decade I believe. Sadly I think with Mentor leaving this year and Shaker Heights leaving next year, the future of the LEL may be in doubt.

Okay, so every bar will allow smoking. Whether or not one goes to a bar is a personal choice. We're not talking about the post office.

Agreed with 8Titles. I wonder why it took this long to get to the Supreme Court?

When it comes to public safety, you're right, staffing should not be a question. But when it comes to education, it seems that there's no reason why class sizes in districts around the state couldn't easily go to 50 students for one teacher. I mean Kasich's education czar said it, so it must make some sense. Right?

And on the whole, charters really do no better than public schools. But the facts won't get in the way of a big political giveback by Kasich to his White Hat Management buddies.

Stable compensation, pension retirements with COLA, not 401k's, excellent healthcare benefits, overly generous sick days, personal days, vacation days... when state, county & city budgets are running major defecits, everything will be scrutinized. What's so funny about that? What's really funny is that you only took part of my quote to comment on. Go back and read what came after what you quoted. It's kind of important to the point I was making.
