SB5 Bill and Repeal News
Seemingly against the wishes of their membership. Read some of the comments below the news release. The OFB looks like it's going to lose some of its membership in the coming year because of this endorsement.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Cleveland Heights, like Cleveland, can't even handle its own significant problems, let alone worrying about getting East Cleveland "under control." If you're a resident of CH (and I'm using that as a general address to any CH resident, because I know that you are not), you better fight long and hard against any merger proposals that talk of bringing on part or all of EC into CH.

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
I think SE residents are going to vote that one down. I wonder what happens next if they do?

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
I see the "overwhelming support for this reform from the business community" (and they always support Republican causes, even blatant losers such as this one) and with the rest of the support for the bill coming from the most extreme conservatives, we're looking at about 35-40% of the electorate at most. Mostly everyone else correctly sees through the political nonsense that Kasich brought to reform process and they're rejecting it. I haven't seen a poll for this, but I'd love to see a breakdown of how those who voted for Kasich in 2010 feel about this issue. I think you'll find that such numbers would show a revealing split on the issue among those who supported him. People like Bill Cunningham and traditionally conservative police and firefighters who all threw their support behind Kasich have big issues with how far this law goes.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
Those three artists could not be more different from each other and I'm not sure why they'd be mentioned together like that. Regardless, who's to say what will stand the test of time in the coming years? This may come as a surprise, but there is actually talent and quality in a lot of music that goes beyond the classical genre that has existed for several centuries.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
Maybe. Or maybe it will be something that the legislature and governor decide not to even touch again in an election year. Either way, the next time the discussion is held, you can bet that the unions are going to have their say regardless of when it happens. At this point it's probably better for Ohio that Kasich's gigantic ego goes through a humbling defeat this fall.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
The Republicans barely got it passed the first time, including using some questionable tactics along the way and having dissent within the ranks. I doubt they're going to be able to pull it off again, especially after a crushing defeat at the polls. Moderate Republicans in swing districts (though this will be changing with gerrymandering) would have a hard time justifying to their constituents voting for such a bill a second time.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
Kasich now wants to bargain on SB5. Wonder if that has anything to do with the polls signaling embarrassing defeat in the fall?

Arcade Fire simply blows my mind.

Cleveland: "The Avengers" Picture Thread *SPOILER ALERT*
Regardless of all that, I am very likely to go see this movie in the theaters because a significant portion of it was filmed here and it actually looks decent.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Yes, but the difference is that much of the Heights area was built up at a time when quality and character were important. And a lot of the remnants of that era have stood the test of time. These areas were and are unique. The same cannot be said of Solon and other nearly-identical cookie-cutter suburbs. There is very little offered in Solon that one cannot find in about two dozen other suburbs in Greater Cleveland. Character and quality are great...until after a generation or two it stops getting maintained. See Glenville. And you're starting to see it in parts of Cleveland Heights. I hope you realize there's a huge population of people living in Solon that moved from the Heights area because they got sick of dealing with what was/is going on there. At some point you want to stop fighting to keep your city a great place to live and just live there. Of course I realize that. However, if most people had stayed and fought, things would be much better. But that's okay, because the same types of people that ran from the Heights to Solon will be running from Solon to Auburn Township or Streetsboro when changes start taking place in Solon. And don't kid yourself, the changes are already starting to creep in. Solon is just the current stop on the Exurban (Sprawl) Express... And as I mentioned above, though, there are still large chunks of both CH and SH that are in great shape, certainly better than anything you'll find in Solon.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Right, but we're talking about Solon which is, for the most part, soulless. Chagrin Falls would be a better example for your argument. Sure, but there are large areas of the Heights suburbs in which people do have similar core values and do take care of their homes/yards. The schools aren't great. The kids that attend the schools and their families are. You think if you switched the student bodies of Solon and Cleveland Heights that much, if anything, would change in the way of the all "important" test scores (for either group)? Also, if you live in Solon and work downtown, you're not really close to where you work. Especially not in winter. What's this based on? Hearsay?

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I think they're looking at something like 45 games in 44 days, including 4 double-headers. :-o The good news is that they do have the rotation depth to deal with such a schedule, but it's still going to be very difficult. What's his ERA against the ChiSox this year? Over 20.00 I would guess! Haha, this is kind of stupid but odd: Carmona is 5-12 with a 5.12 ERA on the season.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I've heard anecdotally on a few occasions that Heights was also always highly-regarded on a national level and had a lot of prestige, but I've never been able to verify that and of course there were no "national high school rankings" back then.

However neither should they begrudge me my right to criticize/make fun of their personal decision. ;)

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
J40J pretty nailed it. The school district point is particularly on target and one that really confuses some people. There is one caveat with the school districts discussion that I don't have the time or energy to explain right this second, but maybe tomorrow. On a somewhat related note, I am very concerned about the slow but steady ghettoization of the Heights area and other parts of Greater Cleveland with otherwise amazing character. If more and more people continue to be convinced that places like Solon are truly "desirable," the only livable areas we're going to be left with are going to be suburb after suburb of that type of crap.

Cleveland: "The Avengers" Picture Thread *SPOILER ALERT*
I'm not a big comic book movie fan (outside of the new Batman series), so I have what might be a dumb question: Is this Avengers movie a big deal as far as comic book movies go?

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I don't know about that. In fact, because of rankings like these that come out from time to time featuring Solon, I've noticed an uppity/elitist point-of-view from many Solonites in which many also have a "scared of their own shadow" view of the inner-ring suburbs.
-
Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Yes, that would also soundly qualify as being another dumb-a$$ list of rankings. Even if it were really a "small town," it's the beneficiary of the region's archaic income-tax structure and the state DOE's school ratings system that rewards/punishes school districts based on data that are heavily-influenced by demographics. Additionally, just about every third or fourth suburb in Greater Cleveland has a Cleveland Clinic branch, and many of the ones that don't have branches of University Hospitals. And the Solon Philharmonic Orchestra, cited as some sort of a significant cultural offering, is kind of small potatoes compared to some of the things other suburbs offer in the realm of culture. In a nutshell, Solon, with growth and "success" driven by suburban sprawl, is emblematic of everything that's wrong with this region. But in the United States in 2011, this is supposedly what a majority of people find desirable in a small town, so it's no shock that Solon would rank so highly. ;) For what it's worth, I think it's been a few years since Solon has taken the top ranking in Cleveland Magazine's utter failure of an attempt at ranking Cleveland's suburbs.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
No, but it's encouraging to me that we were right in a game where we made a ton of mistakes against a great pitcher for the team leading our division. It's also encouraging that we're scoring some runs and that the offense should only get better with Choo coming back (and hopefully will get better when Grady comes back as well). I said this earlier, but more of these "encouraging" moments need to turn into wins at this point in the season. Otherwise in early October this team is literally going to be asking itself "what if" they had actually won a few of these close games...

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I would not be comfortable at all if I were a Tigers' fan, at least not enough to be talking smack after a game in which their ace barely gave them a win to avoid a sweep. There is a lot of season left to be played, including nine more games between these clubs.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Sorry, I should have been more specific. Masterson WILL be starting on Friday. Tomlin goes on Saturday, and Sunday is still up in the air, so expect Huff to get the call.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Best case scenario last night is that not only did they win, but because of the rain delay the Tribe is able to re-shuffle the rotation and Masterson can pitch again on Friday against the Twinkies...

Sears / Kmart News
If they ignore any extraneous costs, they will be dead and gone. I don't know how so many things get spun into being about rail on this message board, but this was one of the bigger reaches I've seen. Cost of living and quality of life are often very closely-related.
