  1. Here's how I look at the McCoy situation: This is his year to prove himself. The Browns aren't going to the playoffs regardless of who's at QB, so let him go out and show the organization if he's going to be the starter of the future. If he shows that he can't play at this level consistently for a full season, guess what, this team can make a serious bid for Andrew Luck next year. They will likely land a top ten pick, and they will also have some other extra picks to play around with to move up to get Luck if the Browns aren't at #1 (which I don't think they will be anyways). If McCoy isn't the answer, I feel very confident that Luck would be--but it would set the club back another one or two years, which would kind of stink.
  2. They were unlucky to not go 5-2 on that roadtrip. The two close losses in Boston, in fairness, should have been split. In Texas, the late losses on Friday night and Sunday night should have been wins, and the late win on Saturday night should have been a loss. Oh well, shoulda, coulda, woulda...this team had a great trip and didn't come away with as many wins as they should have. It's nice to feel good about how they're playing, but I hope that all of these losses don't come back to bite them in the behind. For my sanity, if they lose the division, I hope it's by a sizable amount of games (3+), or else I'll be depressed all offseason at how they blew a great chance at the playoffs.

I think this one works better than the first one posted. Plus we won't need a discussion about what city it is, haha. It's Pittsburgh, right? That building with the big "PNC" in the forefront gave it away. ;)
  4. With Masterson and Jimenez going in games one and two against the Motor City Kitties, the Tribe has to win them both to put themselves in a position to sweep on Thursday when Carmona takes on Verlander. Losing this series, at home, putting them five or seven games back, would be an absolute nail.

Yeah, that's the trick, you have to keep looking at the dot and your peripheral vision will pick up the colors. Look away, and it appears black and white.

Interestingly enough, a few individual aspects of SB5 actually poll very well. Kasich overreached and made it political, however, and it's going to cost him (and the state).
  7. The save is one of the most overrated stats in the sport, and most closers, except for a rare few, don't have extended periods of success beyond a few years. Most fans don't understand this, and thus trading Perez in the heat of a pennant race would have caused a lot of ill-will. That said, I think a good argument could have been made that doing so could have made the team better in the long-run. Oh well...
  8. Good. Despite the improved design aspects of the CH location, it is still way too crowded for what it can reasonably handle. Hopefully these new locations alleviates some of that a bit.
  9. True. Honestly, if I were a manager and had a dominant ace who was head and shoulders above the rest of my starting pitchers, I'd probably re-set the rotation every opportunity I got.

The only ray of light for Kasich is that this complete loser of a bill is going to be on the ballot this Fall, and not next Fall, when it would have directly wreaked havoc on the Republican effort to win Ohio's electoral votes for the Presidency.

Issue 3 is two years in the making, most of the signatures were actually from 2010. A group out of cincy worked to get this on the ballot, and most were collected from paid petitioners. I can say with a high degree of certainty that it had nothing to do with Issue 2. I stand corrected. I heard such an idea floated last Sunday morning on Tom Beres' local round table on WKYC.

Yup, this bill was all about politics to begin with, so no surprise that the repeal vote is going to be incredibly divisive along typical political lines.

Out of the gate, the anti-SB5 side already has more support. Both sides will likely spend a lot of money, but I don't see the pro-SB5 side outspending their opposition by some huge margin. I think the reason for the Chamber of Commerce to back the anti-SB5 campaign is because it would (in an indirect, long-term way) weaken the Democratic Party, which usually does not enact policies friendly to the CoC.
  14. I think it's unrealistic to expect that Cleveland will ever be some sort of an entertainment hub with labels, studios, etc. setting up shop here. There are a few gigantic cities that have an oligopoly on that industry, and that's never going to change. Let's moderate our expectations a bit. I'm just satisfied in seeing people who represent this city having success and continuing to shed a positive light on their roots.
  15. Yeah, that will be huge, and they will be facing the Tigers' weakest two starters as well. And it looks like the Tigers won't get to throw Verlander at the Tribe in that series, unless they want to bump Porcello (which they would have the option to do). But Porcello is one of their better starters, so I'm not sure they'd want to do that to him and throw the whole rotation off. It's probably way too early for any team to be playing games with their rotation to get their ace to face a pennant-contending rival. If this were middle or late September, different story...
  16. Yes, and that reason has nothing to do with Orlando Cabrera. I honestly don't understand why you think he's such a great player.

Well, in fairness, it is almost impossible to get any professional/white collar type of job these days without having a four-year college degree. The degree could be in basket-weaving in many cases, but it's still more valuable to many potential employers than not having a degree. It acts as an easy and lazy way for them to weed out candidates. It's important that we don't let these businesses off the hook for perpetuating the idea that everyone who wants to work in these otherwise unspecialized industries needs to have a degree. The financials may not make sense, but there is often no other option.
  18. I think we'd have to know more specifics about the study to come to a determination. The lack of academic improvement would not necessarily concern me as long as there wasn't a decrease in academic achievement. The lack of cost savings goes against intuition and economies of scale. I'm wondering if there were other factors at play.
  19. I think you can find that flexibility and choice by combining into districts of roughly 15,000-25,000 students without creating these geographical giants.
  20. I don't support the idea of countywide school districts in larger urban areas as I think they will create more problems than they solve. That said, even in large urban areas in the South where there are countywide districts there is still often a separate school district for the main central city. That model should be the most extreme case of what happens here, that would still go too far in my opinion. I believe that the state board of education can force school district consolidation. If that's true, then piecemeal consolidation may work a little better. Throw Warrensville City Schools in with Beachwood/Orange. Or throw Richmond Heights and South Euclid-Lyndhurst in with Mayfield. How about Bedford and Maple Heights with Solon? Garfield Heights with Cuyahoga Heights and Independence? :whip:
  21. Columbus is an interesting case because of annexation. I am 99% certain that most of the area of Columbus that is part of the Groveport-Madison School District was annexed into the city years, perhaps several decades, after the independent school district itself was established. I think you'll find that to be a common theme of most of the suburban school districts in Franklin County. I don't think that's reason enough to start merging these districts with the Columbus City Schools. If anything, I think that a few of the smaller school districts in Greater Columbus should be merged with each other. Though Columbus tends to have larger suburban school districts than those located in the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, or Dayton areas.

This is a pretty interesting discussion. I think it's clear that the higher education model that we've had since pretty much the end of World War II is not working anymore. That said, I do worry about those who will be stuck with worthless degrees and potentially hundreds of thousands in loans when the paradigm starts to shift more thoroughly.
  23. Not a big fan of MGK's rap style, but anyone who represents Cleveland like that is okay in my book. I don't know how much it can change Cleveland's image though.

Supposedly Issue 3 was placed on the ballot in large part to generate voter turnout to help in voting down Issue 2. As for that clip with Damon, I think he's right. The idea that the principles of the business world are applicable everywhere, especially education, is a bit ridiculous. There are undoubtedly some good ideas that the business world can lend to education, but to completely model education after a small or medium sized business is not going to work.
