Rethinking the Role of the Local Government
Yes, the exit option is easier, which is partly why people are fleeing from most of the big cities in Ohio, and even many of their core suburbs. And as you're seeing above, in many cases these cities aren't making the tough decisions, but instead raising taxes. If you care about the cores of Ohio's big cities, I think this is something worth fighting for. If you don't particularly mind watching these cities tax and spend themselves to destruction (and I don't think that's hyperbole), I can understand being content with the status quo.

Rethinking the Role of the Local Government
Sorry, but the "free rider" issue is a non starter argument. Renters pay their property taxes through their rent. It may not be "direct", but they sure are paid. Renters understand this, landlords sure as hell do, and probably most intelligent homeowners do. Politicians looking to "divide and conquer" their way to election might hope that they don't, though. This isn't entirely true. It isn't always feasible for landlords to pass those costs on to renters. They may pay a fraction of those costs, at best.

Rethinking the Role of the Local Government
With many of Ohio's big cities facing budget deficits, is it time for local government to get back to basics? Why are cities that are millions of dollars in debt trying to run golf courses and supermarkets? If these things are deemed as necessities, in what other areas of government would cutting spending make more sense? Public safety? Road maintenance? Do the high taxes (with more increases looming in some cases) make sense in this economy? http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/cleveland_facing_30_million_bu.html http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/12/28/copy/city_taxes.ART_ART_12-28-09_A1_MOG4078.html?sid=101 http://www.wlwt.com/money/23795333/detail.html This state, and its cities, are facing tough decisions now and for the foreseeable future. In order to close the gap on some of these deficits, some services are going to have to be cut, or taxes are going to have to be raised. What we have now is simply unsustainable. What are you willing to give up? How much more are you willing to pay?

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
He owed us the championship that he promised to us on multiple occasions. If he didn't go on and on about how he was effectively going to break the city's curse, and so readily accepted the city's love as a "hometown hero," perhaps we wouldn't feel like he owed us anything or that we were entitled to watch him play in a Cavaliers uniform for another few years. All of this came with the extremely unique circumstances of his playing for the Cavaliers franchise, circumstances that he played up as part of his "image." Sure he had a lot of pressure on him, but for those seven years, he never once indicated that he wasn't up for the challenge. The other reason we're mad, is that because his efforts off of the court to help build a championship for the Cavaliers were sub-par, especially in comparison to everything he's done since joining the Heat last month. Taking a pay cut, actively recruiting other players to come play alongside of him, etc.--he did none of that here.

MayDay - Regarding Suspensions (Response to Rankings Thread)
And then there's this: What's the logic behind making such a post here on the forum when you know that I won't be able to read it for a (business) week? The email thing makes sense, it's something you should consider looking in to.

So what's the specific topic? Anything about Cleveland as long as it doesn't offend the moderators' political biases?

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
There's a huge difference between a public park and a city-run grocery store, though arguments can be made against the former as well. But yes, I did get the idea from Reason TV, because I would have never guessed or assumed that any government entity would be in the business of running grocery stores. This is a huge part of Cleveland's problem, when residents think that it's a good thing that the government is involved in such undertakings.

And yet for all of the acclaim that the WSM receives, I still think taxpayers' money could be better used elsewhere. If it's so successful, why not sell it to private interests?

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Tapping the shinpads is not something you do after you've run your mouth about how much you hate the other team. Anyways, no worries, the Cards got the better end of it with Phillips looking like a fool as his team got swept and the scrum leading to #47 missing a few starts.

Phillips ran his mouth and then tapped Molina on the shinguards before his at-bat. There's no way anyone could possibly try to pin the brawl on Yadier. And no, Carpenter knew better than to get too physical. That's why he'll be making his next two starts and Cueto will be riding the pine. The Cardinals are my favorite National League team, I go to several games each year. Just saw them beat the Cubs on a Sunday night at Wrigley a few weeks back! As for the Reds winning the division, we'll see about that.

Reds show their inexperience in getting swept at home by my Cards. Glad to see that Cueto earned himself seven games on the pine with his actions during the scrum. Too bad Phillips didn't get a few games for starting the whole thing by running his mouth..

Well, if one-way Greyhound tickets aren't an option, I suppose we could find some vacant land somewhere in this city that is now holding close to a third of the population it once held at its peak.

Stanzi is a turnover machine. They were incredibly lucky to win in a lot of the games he started. I hope he's healthy for the Ohio State game!

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Well... that's exactly what I mean, haha. It just looks like another example of Forbes playing fast and loose with the definition of "Cleveland" to present the picture it wants. It's what we've all been saying on this site for a long time  Oh, and on that note, I just want to clarify to Scrabble that I was making a comment about how Forbes comes up with those numbers and not criticizing him/her. :-) I was being sarcastic, but given the timeframe and geography used by Forbes, I wouldn't be shocked if Traficant was included in those numbers, which would be ridiculous of course, but not surprising. You're right, they have an agenda and are pushing it with every one of those polls.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
I think that's a fair rating based on their play in the Rose Bowl last year. But in reality, as Graymayre said, it's going to come down to Pryor's consistency. When he's playing well, they can beat anyone in the country in my opinion.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Yeah, and northern Ohio is a lot more than Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, or Greater Cleveland. You mean if James Trafficant's conviction was included in those numbers, it shouldn't have been? ;)

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
And this hits on the important point here. One's climate preference is purely SUBJECTIVE. Yet these publications make the assumption that everyone views hot weather as good and cold weather as bad, which is ridiculous and unfair.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Even if this were true (which I don't believe it to be), the weather here is really not much different than other Great Lakes/Northeastern cities in which the majority of the U.S. population lives.

Columbus Bidding to Host 2022/2023 World Fair?
I'm really not trying to start anything Clevelander, but you were right when you said Wikipedia's a terrible source. Or at least it is in this case. I live in Columbus and follow all the major local media sources (and probably all the minor ones too). I can assure you that there has been absolutely no mention of any World Fair bid by Columbus. And a World Fair bid wouldn't make much sense anyway. The last World Fair in the U.S. was in 1982 in Knoxville, Tenn. It was supposed to raise the national profile of Knoxville. I think we can agree that Knoxville's profile has not been raised. And it apparently also left Knoxville $46 million in debt as well. No worries. It was just something I stumbled upon and thought someone on UO must know about if true.
