  1. that is the main reason. Don't want knockoffs that would be more offensive, but more importantly, if someone else gets the trademark, someone could block them from using it to celebrate some of the teams from the past. The Reds cant use Big Red Machine for this reason because they do not own the trademark.
  2. I think that is natural, change is always hard and people in general do not like change. The club has done a decent job at managing this. It was inevitable that this would come to a head, but it is a lot easier now than it would have been in 2010 or 2004. The club has been phasing out the chief over the last 5 years so the blowback will be more limited. People will be hurt by this, but for those who love the chief, they can still buy the merchandise in the team store well after 2019
  3. For those that like the Chief, they will still be able to get their Chief Wahoo merchandise after 2018 in the team shop and other locations in NE Ohio as the Chief is just being retired from on-field activities. They will still sell Chief merchandise
  4. I can't see why he is going to do this either. Of course he is destined for larger office, but taking on Chabot now is a lot different than taking on Chabot when Dreihaus won in 2008, plus it is not a presidential election year which will be tough. Even a West Sider like Cranley couldn't win over there.
  5. Stronger owner, stronger project, stronger overall financials. It all comes down to the developer. WIth the Kroger project you have a rock solid developer. The company doing 4th and Race is a smaller and weaker financially. That is why
  6. ^ you are proposing 2 completely different operating models that are not necessarily in line with each other and to do something like this on a high end build would be next to impossible because no bank would finance such a thing. You can do one or the other but not build your model around the condo conversion years down the line. Now where you see this taking place is when you have investors buying the already constructed property and then changing it to condo or apartment. You would essentially have to wait for a new owner to do this.
  7. Bring back *** HE HATE ME ***
  8. Thought they dropped the condo component of the project. Plus until the last 3-4 years the market was not right for condo development around here.
  9. ^ all the big firms have their roster of former politicians and such, not just KMK.
  10. The researcher's analysis is suspect too. Not saying it wont happen, but his connecting the dots speaks more of wild conspiracy theory more than any deep dive analysis.
  11. I think they are a bit into the conspiracy theories on this. Jim McGraw is in charge of the KMK Consulting arm not the law firm. This is a governmental consulting firm that consults with municipal governments.
  12. I saw one time that Cleveland had the 4th most ND alums behind Chicago, Cincinnati and Indy.
  13. ^ no that will be downtown :) lol
  14. ^ Jake is right, growing up Ohio State was an afterthought in Cincinnati. I was always a huge OSU fan and if we were ever out at a bar or restaurant the OSU game was always secondary to Notre Dame or UC or even the big SEC game of the week. This was especially true on the West Side which was a huge Notre Dame area. The East side had a large Michigan component to it. UC still was the dominant force in the market and OSU was probably around or maybe even below where UK was in the Cincy market. That changed in 2002 as the OSU fans came out of the woodwork a bit. Cincy still is not an OSU town and never will be, the it is a bit more recognized down here instead of just being an afterthought
  15. This is what motivated my question. I grew up in Cincinnati, but my siblings and I never considered Cleveland State, in large part to its name and branding. The fact that Cincinnati State is a technical and community college probably made me assume Cleveland State was similar. As an outsider it seems like a very underutilized asset. Cleveland State is much more of a city school feel to it than UC or Akron or even Toledo. It does not have the research that is done at the other schools, especially Cincinnati. The most similar school to Cleveland State would be NKU.
  16. I'm not sure you realize how large UC is. It's already over 2/3 the size of OSU, by enrollment. (Though apparently it receives only half the research funding from the state.) The state isn't the source of those research dollars; those mostly come from the feds and foundations. Case does have the highest research status by its membership in the Association of American Universities, which has baseline research expectations for membership. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently left the AAU because, lacking a medical school, it could not attract the research dollars necessary for membership. Case and OSU are both members of the AAU, but the state of Ohio really only supports one major research university - OSU, unlike nearly all surrounding states. That's why Im confident that the state could support another, if OSU weren't interfering, as others have mentioned. AAU and R1 research are 2 different things.
  17. Not to knock what Bama and S. Carolina are doing, but when your local public school systems absolutely suck, you need to farm outside your state to find talent to bolster your reputation since you cant develop it homegrown.
  18. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_research_universities_in_the_United_States I thought OSU, Case and UC were the 3 R1 Schools in Ohio. What status is being held back by the state pertaining to UC?
  19. WHat was once a crowded field is starting to gain a lot of clarity on both sides.
  20. ^ 10-20 years ago, yes. Today, not so much. Retail has changed and very few major cities now have downtown retail. Plus it is not like Macy's has abandoned the region altogether. Kroger is based here and did not have a store downtown (yes I know they are in the city limits) I don't think Formica has a showroom in Cincinnati proper Also, don't be surprised if they do a smaller backstage store in the area. I think you are reading too much into this
  21. ^ Yes, but when you can get say $10-15 million cash for the garage to deploy to your core business vs maybe $1 million a year in parking revenue in the short term, it is worth it.
  22. This is all part of the strategy they have been deploying over the last 5 years of selling off their real estate for cash and focusing on the core business. They are not in the parking garage business so this move makes a lot of sense.
  23. ^ I don't doubt your long view of the market and think in 10+ years your projections are likely to be true, but I don't want to tie up my money into this amount of volatility waiting for the long game to play out. I am not a day trader either so I don't invest in this. I find it fascinating but not necessarily for me, but do appreciate your perspective on this
  24. ^ So as an active investor, what is your take? Personally, I know very little about them but there are a lot of people at my office who are into them. Was curious if you had any insight into this and whether it may disrupt the market or if it is just a blip. I know it is your opinion but, you seem to be the resident expert on this board on this topic so interested in hearing it.
  25. is that going to bring the market down to more rational levels or do you think nothing will come of it or nothing will change?
