  1. which city will get streetcars first, Cincy or Columbus??
  2. Everytime I drive though Indy, I get the feeling like I am in a bad strip mall full of chain stores and no originallity. While Indy may seem to have a lot going for it, the city is a fad and has no sustainability.
  3. P&G Garage?
  4. I was up there a few months ago. I really was a throwback. Great view. should be used more.
  5. I drive by there every so often and they have been moving dirt for a few weeks now.
  6. Cincy could pass Cleveland soon if based on those numbers, however, having lived in both I would find it hard to believe since Cleveland just feels like a bigger city when you are there.
  7. The problem with the surface lots is that they are owned by St. X high school and the proceeds from those lots help go to offset tuition for students at the school. They have a restriction on the land that any development has to be used for educational purposes that would assist the school in some way. Essentially, any new development on the surface lots there would have to guarantee the continued revenue stream for the school over a period of time.
  8. I understand your point, and it definitely would give them a more vested influence in the area but it is not like companies who own have never moved their HQ. For Example, US Bank owns their building downtown but they moved the HQ from Cincy years ago. However, to support your point, even though the HQ moved, they did maintain a significant presence in the city.
  9. You're right. I've never thought of that, but when you say it, it seems completely obvious. However, it needs to be a real wine shop, with a broad selection. Good every day table wines along with the high end stuff. I can't stand those specialty shops that looks like someone opened it up as a hobby. Maybe less than 50 labels total. All way overpriced. I've never seen one of those make it. THey should have a wine store/wine bar somewhere down in the CBD near the hotels and maybe ft sq, Aronoff areas. I know they used to have one in Dayton (called Bin 130 or something similar) near the Shuster. It eventually went under, however, I think it would work if there were more people, hotels etc in the area
  10. Why did Geauga Lake lose the coaster anyway?
  11. With the expansion of the convention center and new fountain square does anyone think a new downtown hotel in Cincy may be feasable? I assume if one is built it would have to be a smaller, 150-200 room hotel. It seems that above Macy's would be a great location for one or on the eastern end by P&G. There is not much there close to P&G and I would imagine procter flys quite a few people into town.
  12. As much as I would love to see a streetcar, my enthusiam is tempered by the fact that there are many more close minded people like Ed Gault of Norwood. From Opinion page of 1/18/07 Enquirer Streetcar notion just a feel-good idea Regarding the front-page article "City studies possible streetcar system" (Jan. 17): I spit up my coffee when I read this. This idea is just as brilliant as building a clock tower thingee at U.S. 50 and Sycamore. This is just as bright as "creating a planning commission for the Banks." It's just as bright as letting Over-the-Rhine fall to pieces to the point where businesses are scrambling to escape. I think we should just paint all the streets blue. Wouldn't that just make everything feel better? Edward Galt Norwood
  13. He is correct in his assertion that a streetcar line will not be profitable, and will be more unprofitable than running busses in the first 5-10 of the existence. However, people do not undertake an infastructure investment like this for only 5-10 years of benefits. It will take time to change the culture from an auto culture to a culture where people use public transprotation more. I am sure that year after year, ridership will increase and it will eventually become as economical or even more economical than busses. THe only problem is that these lines have not been around long enough to have that affect. One other question to ask, if these cars were so unprofitable, why not just keep them in their stations and run busses instead. I mean if they are not even recouping their fixed costs and see no other economic benefit, then it makes no sense to run them. I bet if you ask anyone on the street in cities that have these systems, they would not trade them in. These cities are likely realize some economic benefit from the streetcar lines. If not, they would be easy to scrap if it didnt. I dont think his article considers this.
  14. I wish the city would repeal that silly prevailing wage law.
  15. Is McFaddens in Cincy owned by different people then the Mcfaddens in Louisville? The website makes reference to McFadden's all over the country but neglects to mention Cincy
  16. ^ Dude, no need for the personal attacks on the guy, let him express his opinion, if it is of little value, that will show from the lack of response it initiates. If that is the way he feels then fine, but no need for name calling.
  17. Why even bother complaining about the Bengals stadium anymore. I think everyone will admit it was a bad deal, but it is a done deal!! It has been finished for over 7 years now. It is time to move on. THere is no use in bitching and moaning after the fact about getting screwed. There comes a point to just accept the fact and move on.
  18. I think with the new places on the sqaure and entertainment options coming to the area, new stores will come in and fill the void of some of the retailers leaving tower place. I doubt it will be the likes of the GAP and national chain retailers like that but I think boutique clothiers and other design stores may do well in that mall and provide a nice mix of entertainment and retail. Also, I can see a potential destination store opening there when everything else is in place, such as a store like Virgin Records or a place like that if the right space can be obtained.
  19. Any chance Ohio may actually have a casino gambling plan that is fair and makes sense to everyone not just the race track owners, or other special interest group?
  20. It dependshow much you want to spend on rent and how big of a space you need. I hear the Emery Apartments on Central and Walnut/Main are very affordable, especially for a smaller one bedroom/efficiency unit. I thin the area is safe, and I have walked from the Main street area bars to the center of town before at night, but some people may disagree with me on this too. The Kinsey lofts on 4th are not bad either. They are an easy safe walk to the call center and there are few bars in the area and a few more planning on opening soon. The Gramercy/Grennich are always nice, and they have nice pool parties there in the summers (It is only a block from the call center). I think Sycamore place is a little expensive for the area and same with the Rennesaince. If you are looking for the best accessibility in the area, I would stay in the CBD area. (north of 3rd, South of Central, West of Broadway) It is only a short walk from the bars, Delta, Fountain Square, many restuarants and stores, that is if you do not have a car.
  21. Not if no one goes to it It will draw more people if they make a cohesive neighborhood with a park and other attractions in the area. People talk about NOTL, that would not be nearly as popular without the aquarium nor would the aquarium be as successful without the levee providing other attractions for visitors. Same will be said for the Freedom center once the Banks is done.
  22. I always thought the Westin rates were the same as Grammery. $1 for the first 2 hours but then after 5 and weekends $1 for the full day. Did they recently change the Westin's rates?
  23. was downtown last night at a christmas party. we left at around 11:30 and drove past the square and surrounding streets. it was amazing to see how many people were out at that time on the street at that hour. Not times square by any means but still there were large groups of people hanging out, taking carriage rides, and just walking around the city. Not sure if it is the new fountain or just that it was a warm night.
  24. It appears that more and more places are now enforcing the ban. I was at McFadden's the last 2 weekends and it appears that this weekend the ashtrays were removed. Granted this weekend when I was there is was during happy hour so I am not sure what it is like late night. I also when to Quatman Cafe, a little neighborhoody bar in Norwood. It used to smell like a chimney there but thankfully no longer. I was impressed.
