Snoeshoe and Holiday Valley have longer runs and more runs than 7 Springs. About 1/2 the terrain at 7 Springs is an 800 ft vertical while the other half is a 400 ft vertical. There are only about 30 slopes there. 7 Springs is a good family resort though and offers a lot of other amenities outside of skiing.
  2. No, recall elections are chaotic and it should be up to the legislature as properly constructed to keep the governor in check or other state officials. Recall's can be done too easily and often times are succeptible to outside interests and outside money funding the effort. Do we really want rich people from California and New York meddling with Ohio politics? they could do this to create the situation they want and force the voters to constantly have to defend. I do not agree with what is going on in Cali either with Newsom, and I am far from a Newsom fan.

How does Timberline compare to Seven Springs, Snowshoe or Holiday Valley if you have experience at either of those places? How does it compare to Canaan Valley if you have been there too? We have a pass to Perfect North so it may be worth a long weekend trip to Timberline next year.
  4. For synopsis- It essentially said that Al Lerner had been plotting for years to get a team in Baltimore (since he was head of MBNA). He was unsuccessful in the attempt to lure an expansion team to the market being passed over for Carolina and Jax. Lerner with a large Cleveland operation had befriended Moddell and was aware of Moddells poor financial condition. He was also aware of the issue with old Cleveland Stadium and how the Moddell was bleeding cash after the Gateway project was built. Lerner knowing that Maryland was all in on getting a team and having the political connections there, started pushing Moddell in that direction to move the team there, even going so far as arranging the meetings between the key players involved. At the same time, he was working with Moddell to negotiate with Cleveland regarding a new Browns deal there, he was more quietly pushing for Baltimore. The article more or less goes to point out that Lerner desperately wanted to own an NFL team, and he figured he could essentially get the Browns to move to Baltimore, then with his friendship with Moddell, he could negotiate favorable terms to buy it from him, since Moddell was in financial hardship anyway, and it was unlikely he would have been able to hold on to the Browns long term. Moddell, really wanted to keep the team in Cleveland, even trying to pull out of the deal at the last minute but for the fact Lerner pushed him into it. After the deal went forward, Moddell and Lerner's friendship quickly fell apart as Moddell felt manipulated into moving the team to Baltimore and Lerner distanced himself from Moddell because he did not want to be blamed for the Browns leaving. Moddell then went on to sell the team to Biscotti because Lerner was not in the picture anymore. Lerner, wanting an NFL Team saw an opportunity in Cleveland and used the poltical connections he developed in the years prior to move to the front of the line in getting the New Browns back. It is ironic that Cleveland has a street named Lerner way and a statue of Al Lerner when he ultimately was the man responsible for the Browns moving in the first place. --- This is pretty much what the article says. Good read for those that subscribe.
  5. Has anyone ever read this article. It is quite interesting and turns your thoughts on Art Modell and Al Lerner on its head. Pretty much it more or less places the impetus and blame on the Browns move to Baltimore 25 years ago on Al Lerner. Without for Lerner, the Browns would have never moved to Baltimore. https://theathletic.com/2180453/2020/11/06/art-modell-cleveland-browns-move-al-lerner-baltimore/

I really like the Tahoe areas, especially North Tahoe because you can fly into Reno, take a cab or the casino shuttle over to a Casino where you can stay rather cheaply. You can get a discount ticket at the Casino and they offer a shuttle bus to the ski resort for the day and back. You get done at the end of the day and can choose many options for dinner and if lady luck is on your side you can pay for your trip at the craps table

The majority of those towns have the free shuttles which are nice. I know Keystone/Breck have shuttles and same with Winter Park to take the locals around. It makes sense given the fact that you do not need to have people at the resort find parking and such.

But again, Timberline was a fully built out resort whereas Spicy Run was just getting started. Plus 15 years ago, the Perfect family finances were probably different than they are today.
  9. Brutus_buckeye replied to NorthShore64's post in a topic in City Life
Timberline is close to Pittsburgh. Plus it was a fully developed resort. Spicy Run was only around for 10 years or less. It was undercapitalized and was unable to finish the long term development before running out of funding. It likely did not make sense to keep Spicy Run operating even with new ownership given the capital cost to do so and do it right.

Most of the good Colorado resorts about about 2 hours from Denver. That is not a great comparison though. In Colorado, it is about the experience where people plan a trip to a "mountain resort". It is much more about the experience. Furthermore, it is just part of the culture there that many Denver people keep ski cottages in some of ski towns in the region for their weekend winter trips. Aspen and Vail from what I have noticed is more of a destination drawing travelers from all over the world (mostly the states). It is not necessarily a local place. When I was there, it seemed like Winter Park (a little closer to Denver) had a lot more locals. Personally, I am a much bigger fan of Utah and Tahoe over Colorado. They are lower altitudes and closer to airports and cities than most of the Colorado resorts which require a car rental and 2 hour commute.

Spicy Run had a 600' vertical which would have been pretty good for Ohio when it operated. It was small and too far away from population centers to effectively make it. Cleveland does it because of the snow belt. There were some other smaller resorts around Ohio that could not make it because it was just too expensive to make snow and provide the amenities of a ski hill. Sugarcreek in Dayton comes to mind here. Perfect North does a masterful job with its operation given how far South it is located. I remember reading somewhere that the Perfect family does consulting with resorts all over the Midwest because of their snowmaking technology. It helps that they are also just outside the beltway of a major population center and also close to a few other population centers.
  12. I think we will see more of that. There are a ton of tax credits for places to install EV stations out there. May not be feasible at many gas stations, but the tax credits essentially pay the cost of the installation.

^ unfortunately I live 6 hours away so weekday trips to Hollimont are harder to do.
  14. Brutus_buckeye replied to NorthShore64's post in a topic in City Life
I always wanted to try Hollimont, however, I thought it was a members only place? How does the membership thing work?

He may win, but I just do not feel he is a strong candidate. There is something about him that people do not like (many GOP voters). I could see a competitive primary here. I am a bit surprised Cranley does not want to get into this race. I know he wants Governor, and certainly would be a viable candidate there, but at the same time, depending how the winds blow in 2021, Dewine could emerge as virtually unbeatable (not saying he will). The Senate seat presents a potential seat where a candidate like Cranley would not have to worry as much about the political winds propping up the incumbent.

I do not think that these billboards are geared at getting companies in New York to leave New York for Ohio. I think the idea is to create the awareness that Ohio does not have a Corp Tax Rate and when they are looking to move, they should look at Ohio instead of Texas and Florida. I do not think the point is as much about saying Hey NYC corp, move to Ohio and save a boatload on taxes, but rather, making sure they think of Ohio in that conversation instead of just Florida and Texas. I bet it is more of that. How effective that is may be questionable, but I believe it is more about an awareness thing competing with Texas and Florida vs poaching NY companies.
  17. Brutus_buckeye replied to Columbo's post in a topic in Ohio Politics
The corporate tax rate is compelling to corporations when weighing the pros/cons on moving. It was a key when GE Moved out of Connecticut a number of years back (was cited as such), but not as big of a key when they decided on moving to Boston over say Florida or Texas. While important, it is not the only thing that matters and generally not the principal driver in corporate relocations. Ohio's problem is not the corp tax rate or really corp taxes. The thing I hear from a lot of people about Ohio in regards to attracting businesses is that they have a very cumbersome taxing structure with all the tiny municipalities that make up an area and region. Each of them has their own tax structure and tax rates and that adds a bunch of admin expense amongst other challenges. Sometimes, paying a higher corporate tax does not outweigh the challenges with Ohio's system.

7 Springs was sold out this weekend.

With Holiday Valley, I was worried I may have an issue if I stayed in one of the lodges. I know that State troopers cant prevent you from driving on the interstates or US Highways but was not sure if staying in the hotel could trigger something.

I was trying to book a ski weekend and because of Covid you cant really get anywhere last minute. 7 Springs has capacity at their lodge and chalets, Snowshoe is not selling lift tickets for the rest of Feb on weekends. You need to Quarantine if you go to any of the NY area resorts so it is pretty difficult to book a trip right now.

The thing is, from Chardon, Peek N Peak was really not a far drive and much better than Alpine Valley (still not great) so it was almost worth a little bit further of a trip going just a bit further East

I think it is a bit dumpy on the whole, but it has character which I loved about it. Granted I have not been there in close to 20 years and back then part of the fun was the midnight ski and the cheap beer at the bar.
  23. Brutus_buckeye replied to NorthShore64's post in a topic in City Life
I have always had a soft spot for Alpine Valley. It always had the most character for me compared to many of the other Cleveland resorts. Boston Mills and Brandywine suck in my opinion. Snow Trails is meh and so is Mad River. Perfect North is a semi-decent hill in the region and the only one worth really skiing at a couple times a year.

Sometimes people just gotta live and you have to allow reasonable exceptions for things. Yes, it would be ideal if we all followed everything perfectly. I dont think keeping your mouth closed and plugging your nose is really is overly practical to most people. I remember back in college someone said in an effort to save the environment and cut down on waste, people should separate the 2 ply toilet paper into one ply and you can get twice as much use out of it.

Sometimes i leave it on in my car when I am running quick errands between 2 different spots that are close by.
