This looks like a long season. I'm holding out hope that this ends like 1998, with an 0-2 start and a Big Ten championship. Somehow, I doubt it. This thread just shows how much more OSU fans care about U-M than vice versa. While I think that Carr's time has come, there's a certain irony to comparing him to Cooper, since Carr beat him 5-1 I think.

I'm not really sure who you're referring to when you talk about people complaining and hating change the most. I like the new square more, it's an improvement in a lot of ways. I just don't think it's perfect, and I really think that a big tv showing movies would bring people down no matter what else is around. Just like the old Star64 weekend movies in parks. You don't have to worry about LK coming down and messing up your pastries, though. I don't think the old square was horrible, and the idea that it couldn't accomodate big crowds is demonstrably false, especially with the overflow capacity provided by the skywalks. See the gathering after 9/11, the 1990 Championship celebration, any Oktoberfest, and so on.

The combination of the words "live, work, and play" is driving me nuts. That is all.

I agree that the new Square is an improvement over the previous version, though I think that there's a tendency to denigrate the old one a bit too much. The worst elements of the old Square were the walls on 5th St and Vine Street, which have been highlighted here very well. As for the idea that the view down 5th was only for cars, that's ridiculous. One could enjoy the vista from the sidewalk just as well. Something tells me that if a giant tv were showing movies for free on the old square, plenty of folks would've shown up. This goes back far, far longer than last year. It has nothing to do with confidence. Michigan has struggled with the spread offense for at least a decade. I remember the beginning of the season after the '97 championship, when U-M lost to an option running ND in South Bend and I pissed in my friend's dorm room. Then we lost the home opener to Donovan McNabb's feet and arm. The last several games have just highlighted it. Under Carr, U-M has lost to too many early season opponents it has no business losing to. Washington, ND several times, Oregon, UCLA, almost to Ball State last year, and now this. But because they know how to play successfully in the Big Ten, they've been able to put together relatively successful seasons. The program never had a terrible year, never reached a crisis point, like ND, Penn State, Alabama and so on. Well, here's your crisis point. I remember the preseason SI in 1997 that had Michigan around 15th. It said something to the effect of "let's face it, Michigan football isn't what it used to be." Now, Michigan has to face it -- it no longer can be what it used to be.

The mistake that was made with the MetroMoves was to try to make it all things to all people. Had they just proposed a starter line with a smaller price tag I think the measure would have failed by less. Expanding the ballot measure to a multiple line, county wide system may have made sense as a transportation policy, but it was a failed political strategy. It gave people too much to find fault with and inflated the cost. The lesson: start smaller and let it prove its worth to voters.

You're misplacing your possessiveness. I find that most locals simply call it the Suspension Bridge. It's only been named after Roebling since the 1980s.

Nice work. The flag ones are good, if a bit busy. What are the triangles for on the bottom? I dig the dot ones, even if they mainly show the sprawling nature of our urbanized areas. The words Urban Ohio get lost in the shuffle in both cases.

Are the term limit rules the same for the Mayor as they are for council? The other advantage here is that it throws a bone to a vulnerable Dem.

Not to belabor the point, but rather just to throw this out there... He's not really commenting directly on something he knows a lot about. He's commenting on the connection between downtown and the river, land use, and density. He's an expert on retail development. His beef seems to be with the higher building heights. My first impression is that he's worried his view from his modest office at 4th and Plum will be blocked.

I thought W&S would be the primary tenant.
