  1. I recorded this and watched it yesterday. You did a fine job explaining the differences between the old and modern streetcars. And really great footage of the Portland system. Kind of odd host though. At one point, he asked about other cities, then when you answered about Kansas City, he said, "but we don't live in Kansas City!"
  2. Actually, he did much, much better than I recalled. 21,505 votes to finish 13th. I'm surprised the Dems would just toss him overboard.
  3. are you talking about the Public Landing? I can't imagine that going anywhere.

The haze and exhaust give the New York shots a neat tilt shift effect. Very cool.
  5. ^Randy, you need to recalibrate your hatergauge. That's not city bashing. I'm looking forward to some sort of confirmation of the QCS II start.
  6. Is Young even mounting a serious campaign? He didn't last go round, and that really undercuts his argument. Also, it's not clear from Wessels's post, but Garry is a first time endorsed Dem, not a first time candidate.

On the bright side, at least the extensions are getting shorter.
  8. An 8 and a closed paren equals a cool smiley in internet.
  9. Bates is not pleased. I wish the story delved a bit deeper into this line: "Her being there, it may be just fine for me. How it happened is a different story." Obviously, she's pissed about not getting the appointment, but she might want to bite her lip and not insult her own party. If she really thinks that she can ride Qualls' coattails, now is not the time to be complaining about her appointment.
  10. I bet she finishes in the top 3. It's sort of a strange decision on the part of Charter; Qualls doesn't need the incumbent boost. I suppose it makes a big splash for the party and lends some credibility. Every few cycles, there's a crisis of succession in Charter, and talk of their demise. This should put them on solid ground for another 4 terms, or however long before Qualls calls it quits.
  11. Qualls will be a better council member in nearly every respect than Tarbell. Major upgrade. The difference is mainly respect and leadership. She's not the mascot that Tarbell is, but I'd bet she'll be better at forming alliances and getting votes.
  12. Was there any mention at the announcement if she was going to run in the fall? I'd presume so, since part of the idea from the party's perspective is to protect a seat with the advantage of incumbency, not that Qualls needs that advantage.

Loads of people swear by the Matias Tactile Pro keyboard. It's pretty much a recreation of the Apple Extended Keyboard with mechanical keyswitches that give really good feedback. Since I'm not much of a typist, and I'm used to the squishiness of newer Apple keyboards, I don't mind the newer ones. But if you're looking for a new keyboard, you should look there. Unfortunately, no Bluetooth.

^I remember the 80s downtown fondly. Especially shopping and going to movies, and going to a brand new Sawyer Point -- exciting stuff.
  15. That's what I am talking about here. Strictly UT repairs and renovation. This will require funds from the City, County, State, and a handful of federal agencies, along with a huge capital fund raising campaign in the community that would dwarf pretty much anything a nonprofit has tried in recent memory in this town. It will hit around the same time the Symphony will launch a campaign to renovate Music Hall. Museum Center also stated that they would only seek one renewal of the county tax levy, in '09. Given the hubbub about the recent City budget and the tax climate in general, that could be a tougher get this time around.
  16. The folks from UT are very involved with ODOT and other decision makers to try and improve both access and visibility from I75. Right now, it's tricky to get there from the south. As for the repair and renovation needed, I wouldn't be surprised to see $110 million come in at the low end. There's been quite a bit of water penetration from the flat roofs that has weakened the structural steel. It's a big, big job, and not to rain on Rando's parade, but it is by no means a gimme. Hillier's lead architect on the project also led the renovation of the US Supreme Court building and several other historic structures.
  17. Ummm, because it was built in 1931?
  18. The surface lots used to be a park. This plan would restore the park from the opening of the terminal.
  19. This is a great dream, but for your own sakes, remember that's all it is. Incredible though. Right now, the most viable parts of the plan are remaking the park in front of the building, with geothermal wells to provide heating and cooling for the building. They're trying to position themselves to benefit from the reconstruction of 75 and any sort of rail development. w

    My score in Over-the-Rhine: 78
  21. The presentation is a bit lacking, but they are delicious.
  22. Here's hoping that if they do, it's not at the expense of the clock, which still hasn't been reinstalled.
  23. And lose the Celtic D&D font.
  24. Great shots. I can't get a good sense of the context on the shot where you asked about the sqare looking steeple thing. My first guess was Hoffman Elementary in Evanston.
  25. I've been in there to pick up some costumes (don't ask). It was incredible, and chock full of flammable materials. Real shame.
