Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I think projections are around 50 mil from southern district tif through 2033. Now talking about other uptown districts, if needed. On to Blue Ash airport. Use 1 mil per year to pay down general debt bonds. No private investment yet sought. Go after following conceptual approval. Moore explains that starting in basin would make extensions more attractive federally. Dohoney encourages starting asap. If Uptown is in, they need to engage soon. Manager requesting accepting of city capital, TIF, Blue Ash funds, money for future study.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I'm up in the catbird seat here with jmeck and Maximillian. We're starting out with the Manager and Mr Moore explaining the alignment and bribing things up to speed. Dohoney mentioned that he felt that 2010 is not feasible. 82 mil for Uptown loop. Now taking about delaying capital projects. Propose to use general operating debt so that no existing projects are delayed. TIF funding. Recommend using southern TIF (downtown South, or riverfront, district 2) so that OTR funds not tapped.

Cleveland had preliminary baseball rounds at the Jake, and something else I can't remember. Louisville had boxing, which would have been perfect.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
I'm not sure I agree that the offense is there. It might be god enough to contend in the Central, but it's not a strength. Now, if Bruce and/or Votto can have an impact, and Griff and Dunn have solid years, the offense will be good. But that's a lot to ask.

Corryville would definitely yield more bang for the buck from a development standpoint, since there's more unutilized space there. But here's something else to consider. Corryville, and the rest of Uptown besides Clifton, are eligible for New Market Tax Credits. Actually, the census tract with the south side of Ludlow as it's northern boundary is as well, but it's functionally not. At any rate, just putting it out there that NMTCs can be used to spur development in Corryville. Whether you think that means it makes more sense to put the streetcar there as well, to really stimulate the market, or to send it down Clifton to Ludlow, to encourage more development where that tax credit tool isn't available, probably depends on where you're sitting.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Re: Ludlow. The common thread to difficult to develop urban sites (Calhoun, the Banks) is the parking situation. It's the same story with the proposal for the lot on Howell: the parking garage on the bottom of the development and the scale it produced made the project objectionable to part of the community. To the extent a streetcar reduces parking requirements, it unlocks the development potential of that site, as well as the funeral home. Not to mention the Marathon, UDF, and Brugger's locations, which really would be the most appropriate for mixed use development in the four-six story range, which I think is just about as high as the community would want to go. I'd love to see several one story buildings razed and then raised as well, but that small site development might not be worth it, with or without a streetcar. If it were up to me, I'd develop on the north edge of Burnet as well, connecting the Ludlow business district with Jefferson's up to near Bishop. JSkinner's line would do a good job of that. But encroaching on Burnett Woods would be a non-starter.

Someone should inform these gents that Penn Station makes a better cheesesteak than any in Philly. Fresher bread, better cheese, better meat. No whiz wit.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: Old St. George Redevelopment
Cops in the area suggested that it was an electrical fire that started in the west steeple and moved to the east. Probably just speculation, but that's what I heard. So strange to see it in this state.
-
Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: Old St. George Redevelopment
I wonder how apparently only the steeples caught on fire? What a sad day for Cincinnati.
-
Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: Old St. George Redevelopment
Holy crap, Old St George is on fire. Both steeples are burning, and according to news reports, the fire dept can't manage to even get water up to the steeples. Fire fighters have been called back from the building. Hopefully, they can rescue the rest of the building — the steeples are going to be lost. One of the steeples just fell down. Tragic.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Seems to me that this is a stalling tactic. He understands that it is not meant to be a commuting tool (see his question about fares) and then asks whether people will use it to commute, and whether people will park at Findlay Market.

I think 4th street is about 560ft ASL. The riverfront is more like high 400s.

iPhone
I still really like it, and it still feels like reaching into the future. I'd say it's perhaps the best electronic doohickey I've ever had. I'm also encouraged that Apple has released updates that have only made it better, especially the 1.1.3 update — the find location feature does a good job approaching the functionality of GPS, and webclips are very handy. I'd love to see a good implementation of copy and paste, and some changes to email to make it a bit better, like a multipane view. One thing that drives me nuts is the inabiity to create to-dos on the phone. Seems obvious and I can't figure out why it's not there. The developer SDK is released next month, so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of that.

Theoretical problems of economic development
Can you clarify a bit LK? It seems to me that Summers' biggest complaint is that these are non-US actors. So he therefore wouldn't level the same complaint against US economic dev agencies, even if they are ultimately after the same goal. I think he would admit that the zero-sum actions like poaching taken by local economic dev agencies provide no benefit to the economy as a whole.

downtown or Downtown?
Agreed on the formality of "City." But City is short for the City of Cincinnati, which is as good a reason to use it as any. Also, it helps to clarify that you mean to say the government or administration, rather than some amorphous entity like the people or region.

downtown or Downtown?
Should the (S)treetcar really get proper name capitalization? You could call the Enquirer and ask about their style guide.
