  1. Ok, I'm a bit late to the party, but hey I beat Berding to the meeting. I'm up in the peanut gallery, which is a great vantage point for seeing which members are paying attention. Speaking of which, we've got Bortz, Berding, Crowley, Qualls, Thomas. There's a lot of nodding while Moore is presenting the info that, by now, is familiar to all. Moore is talking about the public process and how the route was selected, answering a question from Bortz. 96 percent of respondents at meeting thought this is a good investment. Now discusing federal fundig sources. CMAQ, STP, enhancement funds, so on. FTA small starts is better option, Congress considering changes to make this a better fit. Federal funding not timely. Dohoney adds that to be up and running by 2010, no fed money. State capital funding. Several funding cycles as regions top priority. Local sources like TIF and SIDs.
  2. It might be overkill, but I could post updates here from the meeting if anyone is interested...
  3. ^thomasbw, the helmet works on any kind of bike... but, yes, it's Italian too. Nolan though, not a Vespa. I had a conversation about the streetcar with a "decider" and that person thought the current idea to be "stupid" and was eager to see what the funding recommendations were. Could be a really interesting meeting today, though I'm not sure that these concerns will come out very at the meeting itself. You can kind of see from today's article the angle that concerned parties will have... the cost and where it goes. I think advocates need to be prepared to explain to the rest of the city why it makes sense to just have OTR and downtown first.
  4. I'll be there. Look for the guy with the motorcycle helmet and say hello.
  5. ^Race street is clogged in the PM rush, because several buses run it briefly to get to 5th. But the streetcar won't be on it. That's the only N-S street I can think of with frustrating rush hour traffic. People that think Cincinnati's traffic is bad apparently haven't been to the suburbs. Side note, you don't want to eat at the B/G Diner.
  6. No doubt. I nearly had a coronary.
  7. Remember when this thread was at least tangentially related to the Banks? Yeah, that was swell.
  8. I don't have the time or inclination to answer those questions, but I think perhaps you've been misguided into thinking this effort is to transport all of Portland to Cincinnati. To a certain degree, I can see how this could happen, since it is too frequently the sole example offered by streetcar proponents. But there are others, and they also have a record of success that we would do well to emulate, Little Rock was mentioned as one above. I'm sure many of those have even less in common with Portland than does Cincinnati, if you wish to continue to view the issue solely in terms of how like Portland a place must be to consider streetcars. Yet they have shown an enviable return on investment as well.
  9. Mythos in Newport is closed, I think. The number is disconnected at least.
  10. People sleep on it, because it's hidden in plain sight, but the garage on 7th across from the Aronoff looks great from the street.

Fox said that immigration is a two way street, and that his (great?) grandfather migrated from Cincinnati to Mexico in 1895, and that he found his American dream in Mexico. Stewart responded, in one of those sort of comedic interjections that sometimes hit and sometimes fall flat, and I'm paraphrasing, "Can I just tell you, Cincinnati has gone way downhill since then..." It was one of those times it fell flat. But relatively speaking, he's got a point.
  12. Come on, don't you think that's a bit excessive? I mean, she tells you they are from the Census, DCI, and PDC. Look them up.
  13. Those buildings look great. I think they'll encourage some more rehab on the south side of the market. Activity tends to focus on the north side of the market house, because of the layout, but there's no reason the same couldn't happen on the south side and a bit down Pleasant. Great project by the City and the Corporation.

I only like hats that are fairly to well broken in. Keeping it pristine, with a flat bill and a sticker is out of the question. Any 59/50 can be broken in. I know what you mean about the big hats though. I have to go a size down and try and shrink em a bit with hot water then staight into the dryer.

The thing I couldn't get over was that Deveroe's was just like any other suburban Italian retailer. No one was yelling, "I want some MFing Uptowns!"

^Well, they're both loud mouths. Ellison used to prattle on about moving the zoo to Mt Airy forest and developing housing on the old zoo property. He certainly thought he won the argument, but I wasn't so sure. At any rate, I don't think smartosity is very well determined by argument. Maybe jmeck was calling Willie smart as in cunning, or sly. Which he certainly is.

" The word kybosh, or kibosh, has been used throughout much of the English-speaking world for at least 150 years. Possibly the first printed examples of "putting the kybosh on it" are in Charles Dickens's Sketches by Boz. There are also several American written examples from the 1880s. There are suggestions that it originates from the Yiddish word kabas or kabbasten, meaning to suppress or stop. Other possibilities are from the heraldic word caboshed - the emblem of an animal which is shown full face but cut off close to the ears so that no neck shows. Webster's New World Dictionary suggests it may derive from the old German word "kiebe", meaning carrion. The most likely explanation, however, is that by the Irish poet Padric Colum, who theorised that it comes from the Gaelic "cie bias" meaning "cap of death", the mask worn by the executioner at the block or the black cap ofthe judge when delivering the death sentence. The words are pronounced "ky bosh". Stanley Blenkinsop, Macclesfield The term is from the Irish term for the death cap as worn by a British judge, thus meaning a stop or ending. Dickens in 1836 uses the form "kye-bosk", which suggests that he heard it as two words and so supports an Irish origin. The word was popularised in the First World War song: Belgium Put the Kybosh on the Kaiser. http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/34/messages/216.html

    Wait, what's offensive about kibosh?

omigod, I KNOW, right? I've seen them in other colors as well, like red and black. They sell out really quickly though, apparently. A better version is the city map series. IIRC, Cincinnati's was a map of major streets in OTR. I don't think they're made anymore though.
  21. What are the rates for the private party rooms?

I'm not a big fan of that hat, but it was like $10 at Deveroe's, so I picked it up. It looks like an officially sanctioned Urban Ohio hat though. Except the place marking star next to the 513 is really more like Dayton than Cincinnati. It also looks like a Xavier hat, and I'm not having that. As for the hat in the lower left corner, that one is cool, if a bit Miami Inkish. Too expensive though. If this came in a color besides white, I'd get it.

Moved this past weekend and took the opportunity to snap a pic of most of my hats. From L to R, Back row: UC, beat up Reds frat-ish hat, 1901 Reds road, Montreal Expos, Detroit Tigers, LA Clips hat from the early 90s Middle row: 1957 Reds home, 2000 Reds road, 61-66 Reds road, early 90s Reds, 513 Ohio hat Front row: one of those fancy New Era Reds hats of the sort I usually hate, early 2000s Spring/Batting Practice Reds hat (MLB used), great 1980s Spring Training Reds hat (wool front, mesh back), late 80s Bengals sideline hat.
  24. ^I don't think you can over-estimate how bored LK gets at his job.

Absurd. We had some intense games of pickle back on Berry Ave.
