Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I mean this development is hardly 'car dependent now and forever.' its a short walk to detroit, there is a small specialty store that is about to open (vita urbana) and its not that far of a walk to shop n save, the little meat market next to it, and the new mediterranean market on detroit. an urban neighborhood can still be urban even if each specific building doesn't include shops. we aren't dense enough to have retail on the ground floor of everything

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
It's not petty. It's about how the airport chooses to display itself. A strong managerial system with a focus on quality would require quality throughout the airport, including its signage. The signage is a symptom of a poorly run airport. As an anecdote, I once landed at Hopkins late in the evening (last april). When we arrived at the gate, the pilot said they couldn't find a ground crew to bring us into the gate. He literally told the passengers that it was so late in the evening that 'the ground crew forgot about us.' We sat there for 20 minutes until someone noticed that we were there and got us up to the gate. There needs to be an overhaul of the management here.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
The other part of this is that our rail...while accessible to many entertainment districts...isn't accessible to many neighborhoods. Most of our stops are at suburban parking lots (especially the red line). The places millennial live: lakewood, cleveland heights, edgewater, are not accessible by rail. You end up having to drive to a parking lot to take the train. In that case, why not drive all the way?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
buses will be in the right most lane to be at the bus stop while cars will be in the middle lanes. cars have to turn right around the square, crossing the path of the buses that need to go straight. in the same way that a car turning right over a bike lane can become problematic.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
KJP, do you know if there is a plan for the right-turning cars in the left lanes and straight-going cars in the right lanes?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
similarly...has the fact that buses...which will be in the far right lane will have to get to the center lane to go straight so that they are not going straight while lanes to the left of the bus lane will be turning right. Will there be a bus only light? will buses have to get over a lane or two? that will add time too

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Michelle (if you see this because my Cle.com comment is not going through), have there been any indications about whether the bakery will have a door/entrance on Euclid Avenue? Also, has there been any update on whether the ground-floor retail facing Euclid underneath the Huntington Garage (former Charter bank space) is going to be converted to something else? Thanks!

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I personally enjoy Grumpys for breakfast burritos. Latitude 48 has great breakfast croissant sandwiches and breakfast quesadillas. Townhall has great breakfast sandwiches. Borderline has amazing mexican themed breakfasts (cash only). The Diner on Clifton is also a good place but is small. And Bon Bon is amazing but a little expensive. I could go on but i'll leave you with that...

landmarks is only related to historic properties and districts or developments proposed within those districts. planning commission is more generally related to all development proposals.

i completely agree...i have been struggling in Cleveland without the 'columbusunderground' type website up here. it would be awesome to get one going!

Cleveland: Downtown: nuCLEus
That's a really interesting point. That laneway would have honking, screeching, motors, etc noises not only happening but reverberating throughout the alley. I hope they have a plan for all that noise... And then you have the exhaust. hmmm

In actual nucleus news, i think this is a new brochure with some new renderings. I hadn't seen the laneway rendering shown in here before: http://www.starkenterprises.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/OH_Cleveland_nuCLEus_iPad.pdf

Worst Parking Craters
Sure you could. But what is the motivation for the tax? If the tax is applied to hurt a certain taxpayer, it's punitive and therefore illegal. A land value tax would be applied uniformly across an area. For instance, all properties in downtown Cleveland could be charged a property tax based 80% off their land value and 20% off their building improvements. This would actually encourage property owners to construct buildings rather than the current tax which discourages building. It has been done other places, most notably Pittsburgh. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_value_tax_in_the_United_States http://www.urbantoolsconsult.org/blog/2014/09/11/More-evidence-confirms-the-error-of-stopping-land-value-tax-in-Pittsburgh.aspx And it is a direct recommendation of the VibrantNEO document: http://vibrantneo.org/tag/property-value/ (initiative 1.6)

you could also tax land value higher than building value...therefore making it more expensive to own a parking lot than to build a building on it.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
If we make a quality, interesting space, people will hang out there all the time. Pittsburgh's market square is a great example. I would go down there on a cold but sunny day all year and there are tons of people just sitting. Enjoying watching people. Even if there wasn't an event, it was a great place to just sit and enjoy everything going on around you. Cleveland will have the challenge of having a significantly larger space, but the plans and designs seem to shrink it to a comfortable size. And the buildings around it are already starting to place active first floor uses (200 public square, 75 public square, renaissance hotel). This won't be just an event space. I really think it will be a great everyday space.

Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
I dunno. I have heard from a few people of things in the works. Nothing confirmed, but 'a commercial tower' of sorts and someone working for an architect saying he was working on 'a few' large downtown projects. Neither is a reliable source, so don't take my word for it.
