  1. The front kinda reminds me of the copenhagen opera house: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ec/Copenhagen_Opera_House_-_front_view.jpg I'm ok with it. I'd like a more polished rendering and some close-ups, but largely pretty good. Let's get the ground floor right Cleveland!
  2. That looks like the new Franklin County Courthouse in cbus.

eurokie, I chose OSU's program for love of Columbus--I wanted to work and live there. In the end, the program gave me a degree and all of the connections into Cbus that I needed. If you love cleveland and want to stay there, I would also suggest doing the cleveland route. That said, I did not think intently about what I wanted to learn from my degree. I was seeking more design-oriented information and as you mentioned, OSU is more policy oriented. Consider this immensely. Make sure you are getting what you want out of your degree. Now a few years out, I am thinking about returning for a masters of urban design somewhere because I didn't get that type of experience from my degree. If you are looking for a specific outcome, you may want to pick that school (you seem to have an understanding of the type of training you will receive at each). Remember also, of course, that you can rely on the many other programs at these big schools to take some classes as well (like taking an architecture or public policy class). Good luck! And if you want the inside scoop on anything at OSU, PM me. :P
  4. time out...does this mean cleveland will get some big cranes on the lakefront to load/unload the containers? That would certainly make the port look like its a real port and not a dumping ground
  5. I understand what you are saying--and I am not suggesting RTA is considering changing the name, but perhaps that they should consider changing the name, because when I think of the blue line and the waterfront line, I think that I am going to have to switch trains because they are different lines. And when people who aren't familiar with the system see two lines, they are going to be really confused when a blue line train pulls into the station and leaves as a waterfront line---let alone if they are not getting on on tower city. I mean, imagine if the red line was west of tower city and the purple line was east of it
  6. @clvlndr -- at this point, why are we still calling it the waterfront line? it really is just an extension of the blue and green lines in which some of the trains stop at tower city and some stop further down the line. Could we clean this all up by getting rid of the waterfront line moniker and just say something like "blue line terminating at tower city" and "blue line terminating at waterfront (or whatever the name of the last stop is?)"
  7. I'm still saying that FEB and WHD will just become one big district. They are so close there is no reason people would not walk between the two--and planners/city officials should work to connect the two. It can be a catalyst rather than a competitor. I understand the two may be marketed separately because of ownership, but the City can take steps to combine the two and make it easier to create an even bigger entertainment district
  8. that looks amazing! thanks for the pics!
  9. I hope they light it up really well too. That building will be beautiful
  10. From the drawings, it looks like the setback facing city hall is related to the historic mall plan. They have lined up the front of the building so it matches the setback of the public auditorium. It will keep it uniform. Same with the setback from the mall itself, to keep it flush with the medical mart. For the setback from the medical mart? I am imagining it comes from utilities (is there a driveway there?) and from a desire to not cover up the brand new wall they just built on that side. There are probably windows over there.
  11. you gotta approach warren from the east side--it looks beautiful that way. coming in from the west is just depressing. Thanks for the great pics!
  12. LOL! sans the marble shingles
  13. or the Architecture building at OSU down the road. Definite similarities to the Academic Services Building.
  14. "I love it!" "I hate it!" "Anti-urban!" "Too dense!" "Too much glass!" "Not transparent enough!" Let it begin...
  15. First pics! http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20130820/BIZ/308200089
  16. Maybe this is just my view as a non-clevelander, but the flats and the warehouse district are not that far apart. Everyone is treating these as two separate entertainment districts. I stayed at the Aloft and walked from there to W 6th Street. Its not that far. Rather than claiming this (FEB) to be the death of that (W6th), these two areas should be linked (with awesome artwork and lighting under the blue bridge) to create a much larger entertainment district. I feel like we are all living in the 90s thinking these two areas are inherently separate.

I thought the Chittenden burnt down...

i love that set of pictures--thanks for adding the present day with it. one thing i always found interesting about them is how few trees there were on high street--its almost devoid of them. It is something urbanists take very seriously today, but it wasn't necessary for urbanism to be successful 100 years ago
  19. I would encourage you to contact Continental Real Estate Company who owns and developed it. From my conversations with representatives and those familiar with the project, while wonderful from a pedestrian/planning perspective, the entire project was immensely difficult to accomplish and is a nightmare to run. See what they have to say on it. Good luck!
  20. natininja's right---a lot of local communities have online mapping programs (like cbus for instance) through their planning departments. You can try that for the city ur looking for, usually they let u export it as a pdf or jpeg
  21. what are you trying to map? and what are you trying to export it as? policymap.com search OnTheMaps from local employment dynamics the new york times has a good census 2010 mapping function http://projects.nytimes.com/census/2010/map you can use the census to map stuff--but it doesn't work very well
  22. 1. Pittsburgh 2. Columbus 3. Cleveland 4. Seattle 5. San Francisco Too many world cities to include :P
  23. PIT lost its hub because it wouldn't negotiate rents and United had too many hubs. Hubs aren't really about the local metro population. IMHO

  25. I wish - they were on a CD that someone else in a bigger position than me briefly shared. :( This was about a year ago tho, so I don't know why they didn't come out with them. It was really soon after the plan and I was pretty surprised by how quickly they moved on it.
