@ccars...I disagree--grass isn't particularly good at drainage. you really want to handle water, get some rain gardens in there.

Downtown Department Stores
Pittsburgh does have a lot of crappy downtown stores. They really could stand a facade improvement program--which i believe they have in the pittsburgh-to-paris program

Downtown Department Stores
There was an article last year about the downtown Pittsburgh Macy's. It seems it owns the building and can't do much to sell it--even tho it is trying. It also downsized from something like 8 floors to something like 4...which is a HUGE improvement--when you got to the eighth floor it was a ghost town. http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2011/09/21/downtown-macys-to-downsize/ ok, from 10 down to six

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
Pittsburgh subsidized multiple downtown department stores: a lord and taylor, a brand new lazarus, and offered tax breaks to saks to stay open. All in the early 2000s. All three are now closed. It doesn't work unless there is a market. Most downtown departmet stores are closing, miami, all of those in pittsburgh, columbus--it just isnt how we shop any more.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Took the green line to and from public square today. It was a very nice experience--yea, the fare machines are crappy but RTA had a person at hand to help out. I forget how nice it is to have rail from down here in cbus!

Youngstown: Idora Park
that is WAY prettier than i thought it was going to be...however, there is something about this beautiful, youngstown icon being shipped to new york like a museum. Its very Elgin Marbles of New York http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elgin_Marbles

ClevelandOhio in Pittsburgh - Part 3: Oakland and Carson Street
Hey you took a picture of my house! :D But while the southside is beautiful during the day, it can really become a mess at night. They've taken to blaring sirens for an hour and 10 minutes to clear crowds at 2 am. http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/local/neighborhoods-city/pittsburgh-police-control-late-night-crowds-on-south-side-640890/

Youngstown: Idora Park
Cool video! the location is a great spot for youngstown--a relatively strong neighborhood, quality buildings, right next to lanternman's mill...could definitely be a good connection to metroparks.

Youngstown: Idora Park
This is pretty cool. Some students from OSU did redesigns for the historic, abandoned trolley park in Youngstown: http://yndc.org/news-media/students-ohio-state-university-issue-welcome-back-idora-park-report

Pittsburgh Summer Trip
DEFINITELY go to the Strip district--Saturday mornings. Check out Butler street in Lawrenceville, and google the nationality rooms in the Cathedral of learning. They are cool. Bloomfield is fun for some patios and italian fare. East Liberty is cool to check out some interesting new developments--the new target, the big church, the Bakery Square. All fun places to explore for an urban enthusiast. :) Don't miss market square downtown! and have fun!

Columbus: OSU / University Area Developments and News
CbusTransit replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionNot a fan of this building. A prime location on high street across from the union? I wish we had more stories. Where was the university district commission on this?

Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
I thought you wanted everyone to focus on neighborhoods? so confused... but really, what about all the street renovations happening in river south? that is tons of sidewalk and street enhancements. it is going to look really great and cleveland and cincy are not nearly the suburban downtown that columbus is

Columbus: Hollywood Casino
its a little more complicated than that...from my limited understanding of legal issues, therea re two parts: they donated to a campaign and are treating that as a contract for annexation...i don't really get that part. but secondly, and i think more plausible, they are suing on the basis that the casino's injection of sewage or the transporation of sewage would be a nuisance per se. therefore, because they are a citizen of franklin county, they have standing to claim that it would be a nuisance and could be stopped.

Columbus: Re-branding & Identity
it was going to run down the center of high street...

Columbus: Re-branding & Identity
But Columbus and Franklin County are ponying up for West Broad and for urbanism in general. The regulations we had on the books for development were so outdated and encouraged sprawl. Its not just where you put the money, its how you're regs are written. Well Columbus developed the urban commercial overlay and franklin county the smart growth overlay and now new development is going to be correct along our commmercial corridors. That is a HUGE victory. We can guide development to be more pedestrian friendly. We didn't have the tools before. Now we do. As to the money...it isn't all just Columbus. In fact, a lot of it isnt. A lot of it is MORPC and especially the state. We were moving in the right direction with Strickland adding bikelanes and such. But if the state doesn't want to spend money on it, it makes it harder on us. We are in the midst of a terrible recession. Big projects came and went with the stimulus (and columbus applied for light rail funds), but now we need to be at the basics. That might mean taking time to write better regulations. Want to really see change? switch to a form-based code.
