  1. That isn't a Wagenbrenner infill home... it's actually from the last round of urban renewal done in the mid 80's by M/I Homes. I couldn't recall the exact details so I let google fill in the blanks... 2. Yeah, that's a new Nationwide building. http://www.columbusunderground.com/forums/topic/nationwide-building-5-story-office-building-at-front-and-nationwide Also of note, construction has begun on the parking garage upward expansion next to the Hilton
  3. I noticed the long-vacant bank building at Town & High no longer had a For Lease sign up today, and it looks like the outside had been given a much needed cleaning... anyone hear what is happening to the space?
  4. The area south of the curb cut on High St. is only 128' long (from 2nd Ave to the driveway). I doubt they can get rid of it either, given they are blocked off from the alley by other buildings. A 5100 sq ft retail development would mean the building could be about 30ft and wrap around the corner, assuming that's only ground floor. This doesn't seem bad at all. Crude drawing but it's Monday and I needed a distraction from work.
  5. The project is back... this is from the 6/6 City Council Meeting Highlights Bulletin CREATING A MUNICIPAL CAMPUS TO IMPROVE CITY OPERATIONS: Finance Committee Chair Priscilla R. Tyson is sponsoring ordinance 0830-2011 to authorize the expenditure of $31,693,000.00 to renovate the Old Central Police Building. The plan to create a functional Municipal Campus began over 25 years ago and will have a building design which incorporates a unique blend of old architecture with modern technology and includes "green" standards to create an environmentally sustainable building designed at the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Level. Some of its features will include: energy efficient lighting, reduced flow plumbing components for water conservation, high efficiency heating and air conditioning equipment with a geothermal cooling system and heat recovery system, recycled asphalt products, and a reflective roof coating to increase cooling. When complete, the building will house the Department of Human Resources, City Attorney's Office, City Auditor's Office - Income Tax Division, Civil Service Commission, Department of Public Safety- Director's Office, and the Department of Finance and Management - Purchasing Office.
  6. Good skyline boost, the OSU med tower has been bumped up 3 more stories - when complete it will now become the 28th tallest hospital in the world, who knew! Here's a link to the article http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2011/04/osu-medical-center-stretches-hospital.html?ed=2011-04-08&s=article_du&ana=e_du_pub
  7. Looks like the empty space at Neil & Nationwide is about to be filled The use of the word "tower" really loses its punch when it refers to a 6 story building! http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2011/03/31/arena-district-to-fill-last-gap-with.html

It's about to hit the fan now! Kasich cancels check to casino Transportation bill rider prevents Penn National from getting $2.5 million Thursday, March 24, 2011 03:07 AM By Joe Hallett THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH The Kasich administration has blocked Penn National Gaming from getting about $2.5 million from the state that it was counting on to help clean up the site of the West Side casino it plans to open late in 2012. A two-year, $7 billion state transportation budget sent to Gov. John Kasich yesterday thwarts Penn National's attempt to use Clean Ohio money in cleaning up the site of the former Delphi auto-parts plant near W. Broad Street and I-270. An amendment prohibiting the Ohio Department of Development or other entities from using state assistance for casinos, or other gambling sites such as racetracks, was included in the transportation budget approved by the Senate on Tuesday and ratified by the House yesterday. 9. There was a small market and strip center running the length of Nelson on the NW corner but if memory serves a fire took part of it out and the owner of the corner property either decided to take the insurance and run or knocked it all down to make it more marketable for the current owner to purchase. According to the auditor's site, the current owner now holds all parcels between Broad & Long rather than having several owners previously.
  10. I've heard from some pretty reliable sources that they've got some great plans for the building too, double bonus since the Swiss Chalet currently is not a great visual treat when you're entering the BD from the south!
  11. I've been frustrated that they left the parking area at Cleveland & Gay (the easternmost portion of what I thought was the entire parcel) but then went all the way to the edge on the south, west, and north sides. My frustration was just nixed after looking at the auditors site, they only own the land that the building footprint is on so kudos to them for not adding a surface lot by reducing the footprint.
  12. Those neighborhoods don't have OSU pushing for the redevelopment. I think the city is pleased enough with what OSU is doing for the King-Lincoln area that they are willing to go the extra mile with incentives for Weinland to keep OSU happy. King-Lincoln is, after all, the Mayor's favorite pet project and anything that can benefit that neighborhood deserves a trade-off incentive elsewhere right?

That would've been an easy-out... but the ammendment didn't designate city boundaries other than saying the casino intended for Columbus would move to a designated site within Franklin County.

Wow, this is becoming quite the battle... Carringtons v Colbys anyone? City flexes its muscle with casino New sewer deal with county may force annexation Tuesday, December 14, 2010 02:51 AM By Doug Caruso If Penn National Gaming wants flush toilets at its central Ohio casino, it will have to build it in Columbus. 16. More signs of activity just a little north of Kroger, curious to see how Campus Partners is going to handle this - will Weinland park be getting some new, dense CP-owned housing stock? http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/print-edition/2010/12/03/campus-partners-buys-up-land-next-to.html?ana=e_ph Campus Partners buys up land south of Gateway by Ohio State Business First - by Carrie Ghose Date: Friday, December 3, 2010, 6:00am EST - Last Modified: Thursday, December 2, 2010, 5:04pm EST Related: Commercial Real Estate, Education Enlarge Image Janet Adams | Business First Campus Partners chief Doug Aschenbach plans to ask developers for their ideas for a block of land bordering the South Campus Gateway project next to OSU. 17. I haven't driven by the Kroger recently but assuming things have started moving at the site... $20 million plan Kroger will fix up 8 stores in region Wednesday, December 1, 2010 02:55 AM By Tracy Turner THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Kroger is investing $20 million in some of its Columbus-area stores as it works to meet customer demands, the company said yesterday. The Cincinnati-based grocery chain plans to renovate as many as eight stores in and around Columbus this year and next, with the first of the planned renovations under way at its 1350 N. High St. store near the Ohio State University campus, spokeswoman Amy McCormick said. That store is being completely rebuilt. The company's new campus-area store will sit closer to High Street than its old store and will expand to 56,400 square feet from its current 35,000 square feet, she said. The new store will include service meat and seafood departments, a beverage center and a selection of prepared foods, McCormick said. The pharmacy also will be larger, and the store will increase its offerings in all perishable and grocery departments. 18. Mcmansions will happen no matter what... That said, I'm somewhat grateful that families are choosing to build in existing neighborhoods that do not require infrastructure improvements and don't cause any additional strain on resources like the exurbs do - no harsh words from me for them!
  19. Whether you're for or against the new building it sure is refreshing to see another construction crane on the downtown horizon!
  20. I think it's awesomely ironic that the reflection cast by the new courthouse makes what appears to be jail bars on the sidewalk and surroundings on sunny days...
  21. I hate to see any portion of the Maennerchor go although if people cared so much they should've joined the club over the past few years as membership has steadily declined despite their calls to the neighborhood for support. It's a relief to read that they will be keeping the house on the corner!

I was never a fan of moving a high-density concept close to 270 (Ok, probably going to suffer a Joan of Arc fait by saying too) - Despite the non-family friendly concept an arena district casino brings it was still a dead part of downtown that could still have development potential despite a "gasp" casino in the area.
  23. I assume you meant priced-out gallery owners? Gallery owners and artists are generally two different groups of people. I agree that some group-effort could have a positive impact in creating another area, but it takes a lot of additional energy over just running your own gallery. It may seem "obvious" but really requires the right group of people and the right location. It takes non-self-entitled Gen-Y'rs
  24. GenX is working too hard to keep their jobs safe while GenY is too self absorbed and will only take up a cause if they get immediate returns - The involved and proactive boomers are retiring and great stuff is being lost, get used to this trend.
