  1. Welcome, I am of no help in directing you where to find the owners of the buildings, but I would like to throw in a suggestion of where to buy. Please please buy one on Lorain ave! All of those buildings are beautiful!
  2. Imagine if the market in Cleveland were able to support such a project. Scranton peninsula could be a city within a city. Although, if we were at the point where we could support that, we would be paying 25 bucks for a corned beef sandwich....
  3. Ditto for cleveland
  4. I hate the casino more and more every day
  5. KJP, I have been dismissing the job losses over the past few months as just a lot of retirees at once, but the recent masslayoffs and closings announced are disheartening. Do you know how well the city proper is doing job wise? Are we gaining, losing, staying the same? I understand a strong region is necessary, but at the end of the day, the city trumps All in my book.
  6. EROCC I take offense to you saying soccer doesn't teach you the same teamwork as football. I highly disagree. GOOD soccer teams rely on teamwork. I played with the same group of kids for my entire career from U6 to high school graduation and beyond. I knew what they were going to do in a game before they even knew. We had great team chemistry and we kicked @ss because of it. And as far as anyone saying it is a non contact sport, ive had multiple black eyes, 3 concussions, 2 sprained ankles, a broken wrist, and we had a full blown team vs team fist fight against none other than Mayday's hometown team of Salem Ohio. I guess that's just how we do it in Youngstown.
  7. I love it! In this case, I feel that a single story, single use building works well
  8. So regarding the building proposed for demolition. I spoke with the director of St Clair/Superior, and he has confirmed that they do not support the demolition of this building. He said they are actively trying to find another solution because the alternative is...wait for it...another parking lot!!! This building is quite unique, and needs a new life soon. My question to anyone on the board is who would have interest in remaking this building into artist live/work lofts. St Clair is relatively intact and with all of the great work by the CDC, in a few years we would look back on demolition as a mistake.
  9. That was a great story! Collinwood is on fire right now
  10. On the topic of the housing boom in Ohio City... I guess this is Ohio City??? http://www.progressiveurban.com/getagent/Pages.php?Page=0000846105 I have always liked this little nabe at the bottom of Columbus Hill.
  11. Has anyone written to the landmarks commission? I have been meaning to but haven't had the time the past couple of days. I know the landmarks commission has made a few controversial decisions, but I can't believe they would allow this in perhaps THE best urban nabe in cleveland. It would be a travesty. If they want to demolish it, then fine, but they should not even be allowed to touch that building until they are working with a selected developer. I thought in order to demolish a historic structure, you had to have a redevelopment plan to present. A F$@&ing parking lot isn't a redevelopment plan!!!!
  12. Michelle, Do we know if Weston has made any progress with persuading these guys to sell them the building, or is it still the same situation? Your last article had mentioned the "talks" were still underway. This could be such an important development, but L&R is throwing a wrench in everything. They need to take their crappy parking lots back to California.
  13. ^ can't agree more! As the west side continues to redevelop, they need to crack down hard on Cudell. I fully understand that poverty and crime are a part of every city, but Cudell should not be a place for these thugs. Time for wholesale clearance. Crack down on crime and property upkeep and watch the thug element magically disappear. Cudell is situated to be the next in line to start redevlpment after DS starts to fill up.
  14. Checking the BLS unemployment report for the Cleveland MSA (not seasonally adjusted), I read: June labor force - 1,061.370 July labor force - 1,075,832 June employment - 979,320 July employment - 997,290 June unemployment - 82,150 July unemployment - 78,539 June unemp. rate - 7.7% July unemp. rate - 7.3% Improvement in every area. Reference: http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/surveymost?la The PD is blowing this wayyyy out of proportion. There's more data to the story than being presented. Trust me guys. This is a good trend. All of my friends from Youngstown are coming up here to find jobs. This is all election season BS
  15. Gottaplan, I took a bike ride around the neighborhood this weekend, and I saw a lot of homes under renovation particularly in the area around waverly station/ St. Stephens/ ecovillage. Is this the workings of DSCDO, or is this just market forces following a trend? Either way, it's very nice to see.
  16. FWIW, I work with someone who's mother works at heinen's, and they say there is a pretty good chance we're getting one downtown
  17. Great set of photos! That's quite the walk from Ohio city to kamms corners. Lorain is by far my favorite street in this city. The amount of renovations and planned renovations occurring lately is impressive. Hansa house and the new brewery incubator as well as the redevelopment of the eastern edge of DS/western edge of OC are really a game changer. In a few years, this should be Cleveland's premier urban corridor.
  18. I've been to western Germany/holland. The architectural style of this building definitely fits in with that style.
  19. This building at 6218 St Clair is being renovated right now. I drive by every day. This is a really unique building. Cleveland doesn't have many like it. As soon as I figure out how to post pics, ill put one up
  20. I think we're underestimating just how many people are retiring in the region. The boomers are quickly reaching retirement age. I'm one of the youngest employees where I work at. We have people retiring left and right, and we can't replace them fast enough. I have a feeling this is what is happening but may not be a bad thing at all. Say all these people are retiring. Some of their positions may be lost to attrition, but a lot of them have to be replaced. That gives the younger generations way more job opportunities, and they, for the most part, the generation that is beginning to repopulate the city. I'd look to see a lot more workplaces start getting younger and the population of downtown, UC, Ohio City, Tremont, Detroit Shoreway, Asiatown, etc continue to expand. As a result, we may start to see neighborhoods like St Clair Superior, Slavic Village, Cudell, And Collinwood start attracting more artists that are leaving those neighborhoods. Believe it or not, we may have the beginning of gentrification in a select few neighborhoods. Let's remember that Our region spiked during the boomer era. I have a feeling this trend will continue which is a good thing
  21. Should we be looking for news on this tomorrow? We need it after a week of this Mcdonalds B.S.
  22. I know this isn't pertinent to this thread, so mods feel free to move it, but I am just wondering what your project in Slavic Village currently is Zimzolla? I cringe every time I see Slavic Village in the demo thread or on the planning commission's website because I fear losing more beautiful buildings. Please someone help this neighborhood! If Slavic Village dies permanently, It will be a huge loss for Cleveland.
  23. I really think this attitude is changing not only here, but in almost every other city. I am a die hard Cleveland lover, so naturally, you don't have to convince me to want to live or work downtown or the near east/west sides. To counter the point that some people will take any job no matter where it is due to the current economy, this summer I was working an internship in a cubicle, sitting at a computer all day at a company in Aurora. I chose to still live downtown and commute. That drive was absolutely miserable every single day. I told myself I would NEVER work in the burbs after that experience, so needless to say, when another company on the near east side offered me an internship, I up and left midway through. Keep in mind that this was a company that was willing to hire me right out of college, and it still wasn't enough. When they asked why I was leaving, I said that I want to be closer to downtown. I'm not the only one either. All of my friends are really pushing hard to find a job in the city, and they are people who don't share the "Cleveland or nowhere else" mentality that I have. These companies are really going to struggle to attract talent in the next ten years.
  24. I do think that this is the largest resident freshman class in history. They had to turn down people who applied for the dorms.
