  1. Wow.
  2. Speaking of the Flats, we forgot Flat Iron! They claim to be pretty old, don't remember how old.
  3. Moe's on E. 17th has a sign outside claiming to have been around for like a hundred years, though today it is a 90s nostalgia bar. Also Becky's a block away seems pretty old. They are the "CSU bars" if such a thing exists
  4. ....It's slightly different. Though your point is well taken re: transit. What is the difference that you see? Just the that NJ stadiums are in less residential areas?
  5. The European model is the same as the New York and Chicago model... stadiums in the city, accessible by transit, but not in the city center.
  6. I'm from Cincinnati, so I wasn't aware of who that is until now. I don't understand the reference, has he proposed a suburban stadium before? Yeah, the Cavs played in an arena for 20 years in almost exactly the location you proposed so that's why your proposal struck us funny. A bit before my time, but they say traffic was an utter nightmare getting in and out of there. There still is Blossom Music Center in the vicinity (similar to Riverbend) which is also a nightmare to get in and out of. In reality people in Akron are happy to drive to Cleveland to watch the Browns, and the drive times you posted from Youngstown and Elyria aren't affected by whether or not it's in Cleveland or Akron. So by moving South you basically only benefit Akron/Canton people and make things a little worse for Clevelanders.

  8. A word on stadium financing. OK, yes we all saw the John Oliver thing and we all know stadiums are a bad deal. That money could be spent on different projects that would almost certainly have a better return for the city. Personally, as somebody who follows planning and development, I would prefer other things. But in the case of Cuyahoga County's stadiums, we have a voter-approved sin tax that can legally only go towards professional sports venues. Other projects would most likely not have had the same support, unfortunately. The idea that the Browns are swindling taxpayers is a bit misleading, because taxpayers literally voted to give the Browns money. Voters of this county voted to pay for stadiums, then they voted to pay for another stadium, and voted again to renovate those stadiums. And so we get stadiums. Not sure how the infamous Paul Brown Stadium deal was set up and whether or not this concept applies in Hamilton County.
  9. ^^Honestly, this might come from my inherent CLE inferiority complex, but it would just be nice to get the press from hosting those kinds of events. Just to get our name on the t-shirts. Indianapolis has done a great job with this. "2020 FINAL FOUR - CLEVELAND" Not sure how much that would actually improve our economy or quality of life.

Who does that sound like? Hint: Trump

^^They'd probably prefer Dennis because then they could fearmonger more.

I'm just an out of touch elite, but anything anti-establishment (from the left or right) has become a huge turnoff for me. Makes me roll my eyes all the way back in my head.

I already voted Cordray. I honestly might have to vote DeWine if Kucinich wins.
  14. Don't forget the chandelier. I agree with you, I say bring them on, I don't mind the paddle ball at all.
  15. Are there still plans for the police to relocate to the Weston superblock?
  16. The problem is it's not a "nightlife" area. Corner Alley stood alone. The east side could use some nightlife, and being that it's literally a college campus, you'd think they could support at least some of it, but alas, no nightlife.
  17. I think a big reason for this is the MUCH larger quantity of historic rehabs happening in Cleveland. Columbus doesn't have that inventory and thus has gotten better at new construction. While Cleveland developers are focused on converting xxx Euclid Avenue into apartments. Cleveland developers still don't know how to do buildings like the ones going up in the SHort North but hopefully one day we will see buildings like that going in on Lorain Ave.

    Did you respond?
  19. Anybody know where I can find millage rates for Cuyahoga County property taxes? This page (https://treasurer.cuyahogacounty.us/en-us/community-tax-rates.aspx) has the total rates for each jurisdiction, but really I am looking for how much goes to schools, cities, libraries, etc for each jurisdiction. Been looking for like 15 minutes and it's kind of driving me bonkers.
  20. Algebra is a gem.
  21. I said nothing about rent control or junk food or cars, completely different issues. I also understand how interest rates work. However easy it is for me to sit on my perch, it's equally easy for you to sit on your perch and and claim people are benefiting from these 'needed' services. Nobody is benefiting from 10% check cashing fees. Nobody benefits from 400% APR. Nobody needs that money bad enough. It's profiting off financial ignorance and the lack of alternatives, plain and simple. What needs to happen is banking at post offices in order to provide for public welfare in areas that commercial banks don't want to go.
  22. Pretty sure the Cedar Lee garage is based on paying at a machine and entering your space #. Coventry garage still has old-school meters. It's been a few months since I've used them though.
  23. The extreme example here is payday lending. I don't find individualism/choice/freedom to be any sort of moral justification for operating a business like that which is clearly predatory. The extreme individualist worldview basically provides people a rationalization/justification for taking advantage of others.
  24. Nobody even said anything about government "fixing" this in this thread. It would be nice if the American government stopped subsidizing gas and roads (encouraging these excesses), but that hasn't even been discussed here.
  25. It's chicken and egg. Culture and preference definitely informs what is advertised and what people want, but there are certainly many, many cases of advertisers inventing needs and convincing people they have those needs. Or just stick some beautiful or famous people in an ad and many people want it just because of that. Casino ads are my favorite. Always full of incredibly attractive women dressed to the nines playing craps, then when you actually get there it's more like a bunch of people in sweatpants. They play to people's insecurities.
