Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
I second Pugu's opinion - TV's are just so distracting when you're trying to have a conversation with somebody.

Greater Cleveland Sports Commission News & Info
Happened to be on the red line this morning around 9:30 coming in from the west side. Lots of wrestling folks on board. Penn State is the best team so it makes sense, but wow, there are almost as many Penn State fans as all the other schools put together.

Cincinnati: Mayor John Cranley
I just can't understand how somebody in that kind of position would put their livelihood at risk by going to a strip club with coworkers on a work trip. It's not that I necessarily have a problem with it, but it's that other people will. Why risk it?

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
I was in Iceland for two twelve hour layovers last summer, and yeah, it's like $8 for a water. Probably not the best place for a bachelor party. If you want Europe, connect through Iceland on WOW but go to Prague, Budapest, Krakow, or Berlin. That's 20+ hours of travel though which is probably unrealistic.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
It makes a little bit of sense when you consider the context of it, back then. People were still trying to figure out what the internet was going to be and there was no precedent. So I cut them some slack. If I were in charge, however, I would have rebranded it to "plaindealer.com" several years ago. And I'd have Cleveland.com redirect to it. Now that the print edition is going extinct, I would want to ensure that the nearly 200 year old Plain Dealer brand would not disappear. Especially if it was going to be replaced with something generic like Cleveland.com. Poor marketing IMO. Inconsistent and generic.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
I already knew this, but it still doesn't make any sense to me. Why would you have two separate brands? The print Columbus Dispatch is the Columbus Dispatch online. Ditto for the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Dayton Daily News, etc. Why The Plain Dealer, The Cincinnati Enquirer, the Akron Beacon Journal and others, insist on being "____Place____.com" online is totally bizarre to me and seems to date from the early days of the internet.

It could be an issue with the state constitution though - the "home rule" provisions... as was part of the challenge that New Rome filed against their dissolution, but the judge denied on the grounds of New Rome's leaders' misconduct. Any of our resident attorneys have an opinion on this? https://www.coollaw.com/blog/2015/03/home-rule-authority-in-ohio-municipalities.shtml https://www.ohiobar.org/ForPublic/Resources/LawYouCanUse/Pages/Ohio's-Constitution-Gives-Municipalities-Home-Rule-Self-Government-Authority.aspx

When somebody is selling a $129.95 eBook or a seminar on how to make tons of money doing something, you've got to wonder why they're selling eBooks and not just doing the thing they claim will make you tons of money...

That's what I want to know... so your city is on the Fiscal Emergency List, what does that mean? Does the state step in with ideas to fix the issue, or creative ways to turn what assets the city as into revenue generators, or is it just a warning? You would think that if it is just a warning, being on that list for so long would trigger some other State intervention, prior to a bankruptcy. Otherwise what good was the warning? The auditor of state has three escalating "levels" - fiscal caution, fiscal watch, and fiscal emergency. If you get to fiscal emergency they place you under a special state appointed commission that is supposed to help you make a plan to get out of it. Sometimes the state makes solvency loans to help local gov's get out of their hole if they think it could help. But that's pretty much the extent of their powers. http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/118

mu2010 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI always enjoyed Mean Streak when I first was old enough for roller coasters, but over the years it got too rough for me to ride. This seems like a smart move on their part to update the ride without throwing out the whole thing. Such great views of the park and it's such a nice, long ride.

Sounds a lot like what happened with the Big 3 automakers when Honda and Toyota arrived.

Accents
All accents tend to be more prevalent among working classes, at least according to the consensus of linguists. Yeah, you can find it in Shaker, but I absolutely notice it more prevalent, in general, among working-class people or people who perhaps were raised working class even if they aren't themselves. By working class I don't really mean "trashy white west side ghetto," I mean blue-to-white collar suburbs full of families who have been in NEO for generations like Mayfield (where I'm from) or some of the Lake County suburbs. Not really sure about the West Side equivalents but I'm sure they're out there.

Generic Infill Architecture
I agree 100%. I'm not going to claim to be knowledgeable at architecture in any way, and I'm also not going to claim that my perspective is the only correct perspective. But, I don't get what's wrong with modern styles at all. Really, I'm just glad we've moved on from brutalism.

The ugly pink has already been gone. I got my new one last May and it's similar in design to the pink one but it's blue. My car still rocks the Farmville plates haha. edit: here's a sample of the current one:

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
A few pages prior to this, somebody alleged that Akron lobbies against a unified Cleveland Akron MSA. What benefit would Akron have to stand in the way of the merger? Or is this simply foolish pride and literally nothing else?

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
I actually always assumed it was just because the Browns had a couple of decades head start on the Bengals. Once the Bengals were founded, they took root in Cincy but not in the rest of Ohio. Not so with the Reds who were the first pro baseball team.

^Yes, I often take the trolley from the RTA HQ simply because I don't want to walk through it. It's not the distance, it's just an awful walk.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Interesting you said "Reds games" and not "Reds and Bengals." Because I have met more than a few Dayton people who were traditionally "Reds and Browns." This is probably changing in recent years, as the Browns are just so god awful unbearable. On the general subject, I think media market definitely has its impact. Cleveland and Akron share the same local TV. Youngstown, Dayton, and Cincy have their own. Akron is more like a bigger Hamilton than a Dayton.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
His point is if Cleveland annexed Northfield, there would be a dilemma as to which MSA would they put it in. Or to apply the same thing in reverse, if Delaware was its own MSA, where would Polaris go? I agree, Cleveland to Youngstown or Cleveland to Canton is more like Dayton is to CIncy.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
To me Cincinnati has always had its own, totally separate, German-Catholic, not quite Midwestern, not quite Appalachian, 'thing' going on, while Dayton always seemed to me to be straight Midwestern. I dated a girl who was from Oakwood and her and her family always seemed to be pretty well identified as Dayton people, they didn't talk much about Cincy but they liked taking me to all kinds of Air Force / Wright Brothers museums and stuff all the time. Anecdotal obviously.

A fun one for you guys this afternoon: A $1,600 Uber ride? Drunk man blacks out, takes trip from W.Va. to N.J. By Jeremy Schneider NJ Advance Media for NJ.com After a night of partying with buddies in Morgantown, W.V. last Friday, Kenny Bachman thought he had called an Uber to take him back to where he was staying near West Virginia University's campus. Instead, he woke up in the passenger seat of a 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan next to an Uber driver that was taking him home. Not where he was staying with friends in West Virginia, but home home. Like, where he lives. In Gloucester County. More than 300 miles away. http://www.nj.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/02/1600_dollar_uber_ride_story.html (Or, if you prefer the New York Post's style: Drunk bro ‘blacked out’ and took $1,600 Uber ride)

So what exactly saves them money? The fact that they don't have to have printers at every location? Is that really so expensive?

Favorite Music At The Moment?
I agree with you about Gaga and Bieber, you are wrong about Swift. You may not be into blonde girls singing country songs about endless breakups, but she's the real deal too. She's a tremendous songwriter, writes all her own stuff, and also plays instruments. I'm not crazy about her latest album, but I enjoyed most of her first two pop albums too. Girl-pop is so much better today with Gaga and Swift than it was when I was growing up during the Britney Spears era.
