Anybody know where there is a legit, old school dining car diner in Northeast Ohio? If not a dining car, just a good old school greasy spoon. I have a friend coming from Germany in a few weeks and Europeans are strangely fascinated by these things... Too many movies.

Unfortunately, it's not just the airlines that government has to bribe to come to town, it's also pro sports, Hollywood movies (tax credits are offered by many states including us), and many other industries. While competition among private businesses is good for the public, competition among governments basically causes everyone to get screwed.
  3. Didn't the green line just change from midnight to 9 in the past year or so? My family and I took it to the Christmas tree lighting last November and we got stranded and had to Uber back to Green road... Seeing as taking the rapid was my idea in the first place, I wasn't the best transit ambassador that night, haha

It is kind of entertaining that he used the term "drunkenness" instead of "alcoholism."

That Ellis Island museum is truly one of the best I've ever been to. It's great how it's "on location" in that we have an immigration museum right where the immigration occurred as opposed to some building somewhere else. Some cool Cleveland stuff in there too.
  6. Throwing up a 5 or 6 story building on a prominent spot Downtown would be a big mistake and not one that could be corrected for a long time. There are only a handful of truly central vacant lots capable of a large scale transformative project and we should take advantage of them. A 5 or 6 story building would be great if going up on some random lot on the fringe of Downtown, but in this location that's not dense enough. I understand what you are saying, and I am no means dug into my position, but it just seems that cities are built bit-by-bit rather than by transformative projects, and that the transformative projects end up being the flops. I'd rather have all the vacant land covered with shorter buildings than one superstructure and a bunch of other parking lots - look at DC, or any European city. Really I just want to be able to walk down the street and have an unbroken string of city. Obviously that doesn't take account of the cost of the land etc.
  7. Why does it have to be a gigantic city-within-a city, or nothing? Just put up a five or six story mixed use building with some parking in there and we can chalk it up as a win. Lots of other vacant land around. I feel like they always announce these huge projects that don't get done because they are over-ambitious. I understand it has to be more profitable than the parking, but does it really need to be 50 stories to accomplish that?

That is frightening. My cousin was once driving east on US-322 through Gates Mills towards Geauga Co, and on the part going downhill towards the river, he claims a garbage truck was barreling backwards down the hill until it smashed into a stopped police car. He might have exaggerated the story... :-D

Ken Lanci was the Donald Trump of Cleveland before Donald Trump was Donald Trump.
  10. Are people living in FEB actually taking the rapid though? RTA needs to ramp up their marketing game and coordinate it with the property owners down there. People at the FEB income level seem to basically pretend it doesn't exist.
  11. Yeah all you can do at this point is wish it the best. As for rail, at least the road travels by, and putting bike and pedestrian infrastructure and hopefully development near, not one but several rapid stations... in probably the most dis-invested area that the system travels through. We cannot say that for any other Cleveland freeway projects historically.
  12. Yes I am thinking of waiting until Oct/Nov. Not only will I save a bit of money but not paying rent for a few months, also hopefully will be able to get a bit of a deal. I'm a little surprised about the W. 28th apartment being that inexpensive. Were you using craigslist or scoping out 'for rent' signs?
  13. I tried looking for a general relocation-type thread to ask this small question but couldn't really find one that fit. I'm starting CSU MUPD in August and currently crashing with my parents in the burbs. Looking to move out at some point but also might stick around with them for a bit to save money. Thinking I want to be out by next spring at the absolute latest. Looking in Lakewood, Edgewater, maybe Coventry, maybe Little Italy, maybe downtown if I can get a good deal. The long row of brick apartment buildings on Lake Ave in the W. 110s are currently my preference. I'm in a good situation because I can stay at home as long as I want so I can hold out for something good. Since I'll be a poor graduate student I figure I might as well go for a deal. Read online that in some big cities rents tend to go down a lot outside of the summer high season. One page recommended starting to shop in November. Do you guys think there is truth to that in Cleveland?

I also think it's more of a suburban/urban divided than an urban/rural divide. Gotta convince people that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

People have been bickering about this sort of thing all over the world since the beginning of nation-states. You think it's bad here, take a look at Europe.

Cleveland/NEO is not progressive, whatever blue tint it has is due to old-time union-guy/New Deal Democrats. Big difference.
  17. Interesting they talk about getting to Atlantic Coast beaches. I find roads like OH-32 and US-23 (which these roads seem to be upgrades of) to often be more pleasurable to drive than interstates, however. They're just more interesting, and there is never traffic other than in certain pressure points like Delaware.
  18. I never knew I-73 was a thing until this thread popped up today but after reading the old posts here I will just jump in and give my $0.02. I have driven the Columbus - Toledo route (US 23 - OH-15 - I-75) many times as well as Columbus - Athens - WV (US-33) many times and both are perfectly adequate, especially since the Nelsonville bypass opened. 23 in Southern Delaware County is a bit of a pain but you can still do the whole drive pretty quickly regardless.

I love Mr. Money Mustache. I had always had an interest in cities and walk-ability and transit and so on but really his financial philosophy put my interest in urbanism into overdrive. His stuff is all about how modern life is wasteful in many ways and how you can benefit your pocketbook by cutting down on those bizarre and wasteful modern lifestyle practices. Urbanism is simply another perspective on the same problem, talking about how society as a whole could benefit from cutting down on waste. Two sides of the same coin. The type of people that get attracted to MMM are both progressive and capitalist in their mentality, which I find to be a breath of fresh air.

I have an accounting degree. I tried driving for Lyft on the side a few years ago as I was paying down student debt, and after about 6 drives I stopped because it was pretty clear to me that there was almost no real profit involved once you took out gas, maintenance, and wear and tear. Let alone self employment tax. Driving for a rideshare company, in my mind, is essentially withdrawing equity from your car like it's an ATM machine. Simply taking the revenue I got deposited in my bank account and subtracting the IRS' mileage rate left me barely above breaking even. Some people look at that as a good thing because in their mind they are getting a "big tax deduction" but what they don't understand is that that means they don't have any profit.

This is exactly right. Farmer Jack has been living in Medina/Lorain/Geauga/Portage County his whole life and so did his parents and his grandparents. It's the people whose ancestors were industrial-era Clevelanders who built homes on the land that once belonged to Jack's grandparents who annoy me. They are simultaneously harming both the existing rural culture of those outlying places, and the urban culture of Cleveland. They generally all make some kind of comment referencing getting shot anytime going into Cuyahoga County (let alone the City of Cleveland) is mentioned. I say we build a wall at the county limits, make them pay for it. They can pay an entry tax at the border if they want to go to a Cavs game.
  22. That's not true. At the end of the year, you're supposed to claim and pay all sales tax on anythingyou bought, online or elsewhere, if the vendor did not charge it for you. Nobody, and I mean nobody, does this.

Wow... 137 points with 24 3s... Spread a few of those to the game the other day and the series would be tied...
  24. I think Denver is pretty big too.

I'm not as familiar with Cleveland politics as probably many of you are, but does an outsider like this really stand a chance in hell?
