  1. Somebody I know mentioned something about them running out of money to finish removing dams on the Olentangy, are these the ones you refer to? How far upriver are they located?

I'm going to second TPH2 in that Corbo's has superior canoli to Presti's. They don't put the filling in until you order them so they're fresh. Get the ones lined with chocolate! Presti's is more of a coffee shop these days.
  3. Recall there is a section of Cleveland that is still a part of Shaker Heights schools. I cannot say for sure but I would assume the school borders would remain what they are unless explicitly changed by the state legislature. The mayor would have control over the CMSD but not the ECCSD, even though the ECCSD lies in the city of Cleveland. Those who live in the ECCSD borders would vote on and pay separate tax levies for schools.
  4. School districts and libraries are entirely separate entities in Ohio, with their own special boundaries created by the state, so it would take a whole separate discussion of the school/library boards to merge those.
  5. Gotcha. I know platform and train style often differs but I thought grade separation was the main difference between light and heavy.
  6. If it's a subway, how is it considered light rail? Wouldn't that be heavy rail? Maybe it's just a case of the author not knowing the terminology. Otherwise this is kind of a fairy tale. Cut and cover on high street? $1.1 billion? Glad people are dreaming though.
  7. You're right, my ex girlfriend was from Oakwood and her dad used to literally boast about how great their joint police/fire department is and how their police response times are sooo much better than Dayton's. They'd never go for it. But I don't think they have to... they would most likely get to remain separate municipalities if it's anything like the way it's been done in Indy and Nashville. Essentially, the City of Dayton goes away and its functions are thereafter performed by the County. Not much changes for the Oakwoods, Ketterings, and Beavercreeks of the world.
  8. Reminds me of Canton's... maybe they need to add a big "CANTON!" sign to the top:
  9. Did you go down to the riverfront in StL? I went to the arch in 2012 and walked down to the Mississippi River for a second, and all I could think of was how terrible it was compared to Cincinnati's.

Honest question: you're from out of town and you're driving your family for a day at the beach. Right on the doorstep to Edgewater Park is the word SEWER prominently displayed. Tell me, how do you feel about going into the water? How is this any different than marketing the Sewer District on bottled drinking water? It would be stupid. This reflects negatively on Cleveland. The NEORSD is a public entity IN CLEVELAND. This strategic advertising absolutely hurts the process of selling the city as a beach and water sports destination. I honestly don't know how anyone could possibly think it's a good idea to "market" the Sewer District in that way. And for that matter, most jurisdictions use benign terms like "Wastewater" in their name, not "Sewer" and it is precisely because of the negative connotation. Cleveland has a honest to God legacy of horrid polluted water. It's in the city's best interest to distance itself from the connection of Lake Erie and the "Sewer." I didn't realize that that graphic was displayed at Edgewater. I thought you just pulled a random graphic from the sewer district's website and were upset that it said 'sewer,' haha.

But it's marketing for the sewer district... how could they not say sewer? It's not like it's marketing the city.
  12. Big news for my 'hood. Word is it'll probably be mixed used commercial and retail, with a retail strip along 5th. Obviously that could change though, this is a long way off. Crazy that this whole plot was a neighborhood for most of Columbus' history until Battelle bought it all up in the 70s or 80s or something. Battelle to Seek Buyers for Land Owned in Harrison West The land owned by Battelle in our neighborhood may look different in a few years. Battelle has informed the Harrison West Society that they plan to seek proposals for the development of their Harrison West property, which includes the parcels bounded by West 5th and West 3rd Avenues on the north and south and by Perry Street and the Olentangy River on the east and west as well as the parcels on the southeast corner of West 5th and Perry. I think the whole Best Location in the Nation thing is a little too easy to poke fun at. (Kind of like that sign on I-71 that proclaims Ashland, Ohio as the "World Headquarters of Nice People.") Plus it's generic, why don't we actually say something about our city? Forest City puts us [back] in the big leagues. It harkens back to a time when poetic big city names were common, ala the Windy City, the City of Brotherly Love, the Queen City, the Steel City, the Music City, the Motor City, the City of Angels, and of course the City that Never Sleeps. Plus it creates images of greenness and lushness, so it also puts us in the 21st century. EDIT: Apparently the nickname actually comes from Tocqueville: http://www.forestcityforever.com/fye/2012/07/20/the-forest-city/
  15. It's better to give the people what they want and build up the population. More people living downtown will do more for the city than anything else. It's hard to get out to the burbs to see friends and family or visit various retail/entertainment establishments without a car in Ohio. I'd go carfree in Chicago in a heartbeat but I don't know if I'd want to go beyond car-lite in Ohio. Just no surface parking. Yay for garages built above street level retail.

Richmond was our mall growing up in Highland Hts, my parents were too cheap for Beachwood haha. When I was very young, my mom worked at the JCPenneys there. I remember as a kid the crazy red 70s carpeting and weird red plastic benches and trash cans. Then I remember the renovations to what it currently looks like. Most of the movies I saw as a teen were at that movie theater. It never had a good selection of stores though, we had to go out to Mentor sometimes for some stuff. Nowadays, my dad has been working out at the Planet Fitness there, which is really nice actually.

Well Columbo, you may have spoken too soon on Columbus politics being boring. This could really shake things up. As for Redflex, I want my $98 back from Summit St back in August 2013. City Council President Andy Ginther caught up in red-light camera bribe case By Lucas Sullivan & Darrel Rowland The Columbus Dispatch • Friday June 19, 2015 6:12 PM A former chief executive officer of the red-light camera company Redflex has pleaded guilty to bribing Columbus elected officials - including Council President Andrew Ginther - through the Ohio Democratic Party to install the cameras and keep them operating in the city. http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2015/06/19/0619-ginther.html

I am currently in a facebook argument about this dumb article. I retired from facebook arguments like 3 years ago so I kind of regret getting into it, but I couldn't help it. Nobody has asked David Blatt how he feels about this "emasculation." It was not emasculation, it was adults discussing a decision and disagreement, and handling it like adults. The Evil SPorts Network makes money by manufacturing controversy. LeBron can't win for losing, the guy gets criticized for every single action he takes. If he goes left, they criticize him for not going right. But if he would have went right, they'd say he should've gone left. LeBron leaves Cleveland? What a heartless jerk. LeBron comes back to Cleveland? He's just doing it for good press. If he didn't argue with Blatt about a play he'd be criticized for being too passive. The Michael Jordan comparison is the most maddening. Jordan routinely bullied and belittled his teammates. LeBron is far more well liked by his team and coaches and appears to be a better leader. But we continue to be sold these attacks on LeBron's character and will never compare to the holy and perfect angels of the 80s and 90s. And I'm not saying he's perfect, but I'm tired of hearing these stupid arguments about how at his core he is basically a rotten, immature person, when it obviously isn't true. People like to over-romanticize the past and nobody from the present can ever measure up, especially in the era of 24/7 media.
  19. I agree completely they need to expand their hours. Though I wouldn't go shopping on a day where only half the stands are open. That is the risk you run making days optional. Availability is important. Factors like parking and price are all secondary if the vendors aren't even open. Could they lower the price per sq ft somewhat to cover the cost of being open additional hours? Shopping malls are very strict about the hours their stores are open for this reason. Even for big snowstorms or hurricanes, the people who run the mall decide if and when the stores are allowed to close, and they all do it at the same time. They also have a lot of other miscellaneous rules vendors are expected to follow. I imagine the West Side Market is operating from similar principles. The North Market in Cbus recently went through this and expanded their hours. There was a little bit of grumbling from some vendors and employees but they all are required to follow it. http://www.dispatch.com/content/blogs/the-bottom-line/2015/02/north-markets-new-hours.html

I was watching Blatt's press conference and he was getting a ton of heat about Mozgov... (especially from a handful of Russian journalists, who seemed to insinuate that he had something personal against Timofey. He got quite perturbed at that.) Same thing on Mike and Mike this morning... lots of people wondering why Mozgov wasn't playing.
  21. Interesting that the "liberal" suburbs rejected it while Northfield Center and Sagamore Hills (where "Agenda 21" and even "density" are cuss words) have done it for years. You might make more progress focusing on governmental efficiency and going easy on "regionalism" references. If anything, the concern was regarding efficiency coming at the expense of service. The unions weren't happy with the plan, either. Cleveland Heights wanted in, but they were never asked to participate. As liberal as you may think that SH and UH are, I'm not sure that regionalism for the sake of it is a big sell around here. The liberal burbs are still conservative in their own way. Like any wealthy and established area, they are going to be highly skeptical of changing something they view as working. As far as townships, I know a township fiscal officer who is convinced in the next 10-20 years the state government is going to try to get rid of them, and either combine them into larger townships or just have them administered by the county. Which really is probably a good idea.

Anyone notice that LeBron used the term "The Forest City" the other day? I think it was in the interview with Wade, but I'm not sure. We should bring that back though.
  23. Nationwide as I understand it isn't privately held by a family or group of investors, it's 'owned' by the customers (this is the meaning of 'mutual') - that might be the difference.

That was a pivotal moment. He was not himself after he hit his head on that camera.
  25. Good to see this is getting lots of press and opposition. I emailed my reps.
