  1. Most populated Census Designated Place in the USA - Paradise, Nevada, home to the "Las Vegas" Strip which is technically outside of the the City of Las Vegas proper. The big casino owners resisted annexation way back in the day so it's really just unincorporated Clark County from a services perspective. The Census refers to it as Paradise. That being said, many CDPs refer to colloquial names for unincorporated towns. You see it less in Northeastern Ohio than in the rest of the state, such as in Hamilton County where a lot of the suburbs are still unincorporated.
  2. ^Agreed on all points but wanted to add, Progressive's gone all-in on remote work and people out that way are already starting to worry about what's going to happen to that campus. Both Eaton and Progressive deciding to locate out on 271 were travesties.
  3. There was a big crains article last week about mass timber and i believe they said Cleveland foundation was going to be the 2nd mass timber building in town.
  4. Not Ohio specifically but check out this old gem I stumbled across - Johnny Cash telling the story of American railroads through narration and old folk songs, quite cool. (Not sure why the thumbnail says Johnny Carson, somebody messed up lol it's Johnny Cash)
  5. I love it, surprised I've heard nothing of this til now as it seems to have some real weight behind it already.

Kelley's condescension is spreading to you. He sent a C&D to make a rebuttal against a deceptive mailer, get over it. Kelley's using Republican fearmongering tactics and doing the bidding of the Police Union, trying to tie Bibb to "Defund the Police" which is patently false. Bibb probably did the cease and desist for press coverage even if there's not a strong case (a common tactic) and it seems like it worked. "Doesn't know how campaigns work." Give me a break. Link
  7. And I should add, we should not be ruining anybody's lives with very high fines and trying to collect it from people who don't have the money or anything like that. The goal is simply to make it kind of a hassle to get caught evading fares.
  8. The proper thing to do is make it the legal equivalent to a parking ticket. A legally enforceable non-criminal fine that doesn't go on any kind of "permanent record" but simply encourages fare payment based solely on the financial penalty. Not sure if we have the legal mechanism to do that but that's what should be done. The scene article makes no mention of it.
  9. I'm like 7-10 years older than most of the gang so hopefully I survive!
  10. Headed to Nashville for the first time in my life this weekend for a bachelor / bachelorette event. I anticipate parking lots, empty glass condo buildings, streets without sidewalks, and a general utter lack of character, and I'm excited to post snarky comments about it upon my return. I'll also ride their transit system so I can see where India Birdsong came from.
  11. Fantastic news!

The past couple of weeks I figured no matter who wins, Cleveland was in for an upgrade. But after watching Kelley's obnoxious and condescending tone last night I don't know if that's true anymore. At least Frank Jackson has a certain charm about him!

No, it's not. Universities have played a large role in regional economic development in other regions, not here. Again because leaders at CWRU historically have a parochial turf war mentality (like their counterparts at city hall) and have only worried about their campus.

I appreciate this in certain contexts, but not in the 2021 Cleveland Mayoral Race. And that's because Cleveland's existing political class, represented by Kelley, suffers from many constraints that exist only in their minds, their own lack of vision (or their own laziness) is what's holding us back on a lot of these issues, more than any real constraint. Most of what Bibb is talking about are things that can be done and have already been done elsewhere. His most spot on answer of the night was when he talked about Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon and how we need to do better and retaining CWRU grads. Only reason that hasn't happened is that city leaders have been asleep at the wheel. Because their myopia keeps them focused on parochial ward issues and turf wars instead of seeing the big picture. (One of the nice things about Bibb is he's actually lived and worked in other places, giving him a perspective that's sorely lacking in the Jackson/Kelley gang).

Kelley's condescension was unbearable. It's clear he and his allies on council are offended that they have to go on defense against this newcomer and they can barely hide their disdain. KK must be good at one-on-one conversations because he's not really a very good public speaker at all, so how has he been getting elected for all this time? My main takeaway from the debate was just that Kelley isn't very charismatic. Kelley, fairly or not (perhaps a little of both), has to implicitly defend all actions taken over 16 years of Frank Jackson. Not a good place to be as a candidate. He's highly annoyed by that and feels it's his turn. But ultimately he doesn't make any kind of substantive case for voting for him other than pandering/fearmongering to people against the police reform stuff. There's plenty of truth to the argument that Bibb isn't just going to waltz into city hall and fix everything instantly. He's going to hit the same obstacles and bureaucratic and other resistance that Kelley and Jackson and all the rest have faced over the years. Some things actually are far easier said than done. I still support Bibb but wow did Kelley do a poor job of articulating and communicating that kernel of truth in his argument. Instead he just came off like a jerk.
  16. Mansfield Frazier, community activist, writer and winery owner, dies at 78 RIP to a true Cleveland original. Got to meet him once, he was one of the most charismatic people I've ever met.
  17. The city needs to pass some kind of property tax increase protection for longtime residents because you could see property values increasing drastically there. You could see gentrification at an extent that hasn't really happened in Cleveland before.
  18. Now that you mention it, yeah, I think you're absolutely right, I forgot about that.
  19. My only very minor qualm is that original Opportunity Corridor redevelopment plans for that 105/Cedar area called for it to be marketed to Biotech companies like nearby IBM Explorys to try to catalyze a biotech/research district. Can't wait forever for that if you have a good project in hand tho. Meijer is a huge win for Cleveland especially in this format with all the added residents.

Thank you for hosting, it was a fun evening.
  21. I actually noticed the same on the CTA busses a few months ago on a trip to Chicago - so at least we're not alone in going to hard seats.

I agree. With Bibb being from that part of town as well, and having Reed's blessing, Bibb should do very well down there.
