Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
Lots of Dennis signs in West Park, he will do well in the southwest with the white working class. Kevin Kelley will do well with older liberals, Bibb with younger liberals. Question is what will happen with the Black vote on the east side, which could also end up being split between a few candidates. This election really would be a perfect case for ranked choice voting - the primary is going to be a cluster ****, Dennis may win out on name recognition.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
Saw Dennis! walking around by himself at the Feast today. Maybe since he's such a West Side guy and doesn't have many connections over there but I was surprised he didn't seem to be doing well at chatting people up. Zack Reed and Justin Bibb also there. In addition to Frank Jackson, Blaine Griffin, and also Chris Ronayne who's running for County Executive next year which I didn't know about and am now excited about.

Cleveland: Population Trends
If you mean the idea of moving I-90 south of Gordon Park in order to open up land for "Edgewater East", I'm actually optimistic about that in the long run, i think it'll happen. The city can only handle one or two megaprojects each couple of decades. Right now opportunity corridor and Irishtown bend. With the former using lots of state ODOT $$$. After those are done, it's only a matter of what we want to spend a ton of money on next, what to put in our sights. That project is such a no-brainer, and parks are just about the most popular political investment you can make. It's definitely on the radar of local planners and such. I think it'll happen.

Cleveland: Population Trends
Hasn't Downtown Cleveland Alliance been producing those estimates? I would think they have to be somewhat accurate. Got to imagine they had relationships with the large apartment building owners and perhaps some access to their data in order to produce the estimates. Property owners would have every incentive to participate since they all have a vested interest in the growth of downtown.

Cleveland: Population Trends
That is what they are trying to do with the Mayor's Transformation Initiative - one program of Frank Jackson's that seems to be going well and hopefully will continue in some form with the new administration. Further I agree with the idea of only targeting it in certain neighborhoods (Glenville, Clark-Fulton, and Buckeye currently) because you can have more of an impact that way - obviously a harder sell politically though.

Cleveland: Population Trends
Yep, and a lot of it is due to de facto bank redlining since banks still typically won't loan in those neighborhoods, at least to the extent they will in the nearby inner-ring suburbs.

Cleveland: Population Trends
We've got to assume a whole bunch of losses happened around 2010-2013 with the foreclosure crisis and recession and all of that, before the "renaissance" really started to pick up major steam in 2014-2015.

Columbus: Population Trends
That is mindboggling, given Columbus' enormous size in the context of what we are used to in Ohio.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
Very happy about the PD endorsement of Bibb. Unfortunately, I ventured into West Park today and saw more than a few ¡Dennis! yard signs.

Cleveland: Downtown: Progressive Field
Yeah, it's just not a good return for the amount of money they have to put into it. Compared to other options like subsidizing factories or apartments or restaurants, etc.

Cleveland: Downtown: Progressive Field
I agree, and I grew up the same way - all my downtown experiences related to going to Indians games as a kid. No economic impact on the region, and the sports teams are absolutely taking advantage of the local governments and taxpayers all over the country, but there's definitely an impact. And if I worked at City Hall in 1990 and was trying to reinvigorate Downtown, sports stadiums were and are the obvious answer, and it worked.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Putting aside the climate stuff, it's also real estate problem. It's simply unsustainable to have the entire industries concentrated in a handful of cities. Not enough room. It becomes unsustainable for people in Seattle or SF to live there - even high-income people - and that's before we even talk about the climate stuff which is a huge problem as well. With both of these factors, we are going to get a lot of people moving here - hopefully job opportunities moving here as well. Buy your Ohio real estate now because it's only going to keep going up.

U.S. House OH-11
I agree with most of you said, where we probably disagree is i think the solution is to raise taxes. As far as "teach a man to fish," i agree with that too, except you can't learn to fish if you're trapped working long hours for low pay, just to stay alive. See Maslow's hierarchy of needs. All we need is a market economy with some measure of redistribution/expanded social safety net/health care/education etc. A healthy and educated population is also good for business. Everybody wins.

It doesn't matter much what your starting offer is. Negotiation simply comes down to having actual leverage and knowing the leverage you have. In politics that means votes. If I go offer $15 for a house just to start at a more extreme position, or ask for ten times the offered salary in a job offer, I'm not going to have much luck...

Dont agree at all. The Democrats are progressive, they just know how to count votes and examine their leverage. They are working on policies while the Nina Turner wing is focused on the appearance of "fighting." The Nina Turner wing thinks they are "fighting hard" but all they really know how to do is act like jerks and alienate literally everyone, then accomplish nothing and blame everyone else. Voters want somebody who will fight for them when the time is right, and be collaborative when the time is right. People like Nina Turner just want to fight. They delude themselves into thinking that this behavior makes them righteous and moral.

NFL: General News & Discussion
^Greater Buffalo's pretty substantially larger than Green Bay. But since they draw off Milwaukee, the Bills' market might be smaller.

^ Yeah, just to have some service that isn't in the middle of the night would be pretty great.

Taiwan's legal name is the Republic of China, because the old government that the communists overthrew in 1949 retreated to the island of Taiwan but kept the legal name Republic of China as a rebellion/dispute against the communists. So as Ram mentioned the Communist Party of China makes them compete as Chinese Taipei and there's all kinds of diplomatic pressure in the UN from the communists to not recognize Taiwan's existence. It's only a coincidence that you googled "ROC" and got info on Taiwan.

It won't necessarily be only human infrastructure, there will be a focus on climate change in the reconciliation bill because the Republicans negotiated most of that stuff out. So, there will likely be some funding for green physical infrastructure included in the reconciliation bill in addition to the human infrastructure. You could see additional rail transit dollars making their way into that. I am confident we will have a reconciliation bill - it's too easy and routine for Democrats to not do it. Manchin and Sinema may limit the scope, however - so hopefully they don't limit it too much.

Hopefully the reconciliation bill includes more.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
I would ultimately agree that Cincinnati's skyline is "better" than Cleveland's, whatever that means, but I'd also note that it's very much a matter of the viewing angle. Cincinnati also has several hills surrounding the city, including an incredible view up on a hill in a park across the river in KY. CLE is mostly flat. The view of Cleveland from Edgewater Beach looks like 3 buildings. Up the hill at the Cleveland sign (Upper Edgewater), with the additional altitude it looks more substantial even though it's still dominated by the 3 buildings. My favorite place to view the CLE skyline is the Ariel International Center on E. 40th. Especially the rooftop. The shorter towers near E.9th are closer to you and the taller towers at Public Square are visible behind them, so you get much more of a dense feeling. Great lake views also.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Smart cards would be lovely but on the subject of the HealthLine, it needs to be returned to the ticketing system that was originally intended except with non-police random ticket checks, and a decriminalized fine for fare evasion.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I would assume and hope (though I may be wrong) that the Indians front office would have had, ya know, lawyers and what not, who check into stuff like that beforehand.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I think the G logo is kind of being underrated by the collective Cleveland internet community, the wings are cool IMO. Not saying I'd have done exactly the same thing but the aesthetic is on the right track. I love that we're going to be the only Art Deco sports team.
