Akron: Random Development and News
Well I guess we will see in the upcoming months what the actual plan is. On another topic, I drove by the Bridgestone Technical facility today and it looks like they are starting to move ground for the new parking deck they are building across the street.

I'm pretty sure the Richland building is the one that Subway is currently located there on the corner. I remember reading an article a couple weeks ago that talked about ZAR going into the Richland building where the club "Fuel" use to be and I know that thats where it was located.

It sounds like there are multiple stories on these nightclubs that are getting twisted around in every which way. The only logical answer to this is they screwed up in the newspaper and meant to say that LUX is moving into the two stories in the Richland building and ZAR is moving into 22 Exchange. Either way I think its a very stupid idea to put a night club in 22 Exchange. Yes it makes sense to put a nightclub below a bunch of students, but the insulation in that building is terrible, and if I were one of the students living above that nightclub having to hear that music constantly I'd be upset for how much I'm paying for one of those corner rooms. Economically wise, I don't think they thought this out very well. This is a NIGHTclub going in and during the day that nice, could have been profitable space, is going to dead and boring. Atleast with a Panera students and downtown employees day and night can benefit, as well as make that space more inviting by adding life to that section of the building. I realize if you want to fill those spaces you can't be picky, but come on use some common sense. I know plenty of students that drive out to how just to go get some coffee or lunch at Panera and do some studying. I see no reason why this wouldn't be a success just a few blocks away from campus.

Yes I agree Panera and Chipotle would be perfect for 22 Exchange. I think this arrangement of shops would be the perfect combo in there; Chipotle, Panera, Great Clips, Pizza BOGO, Coldstone Creamery, and a small convenient store. One thing that completely baffled me while living on campus was how there was no close $10 hair cut salon. Every time I needed a hair cut I would have to drive to Howe Ave. I give tours of the campus at UA and one thing I get asked a lot of is how is campus on the weekends. I kills me to tell them that most students go home on the weekends. I think if downtown had more of what students want when they go home to the suburbs, ie. a movie theatre, retail shops, nicer parks, and other entertainment venues/districts more students would want to stay in Akron for the weekend. With the new housing going in downtown, as well as plans to build close to 3000 new beds on campus it would be very smart to start developing downtown with these things.

I guess on the corner of 22 Exchange they are suppose to be building a nightclub called "ZAR." I'm not really sure how I feel about this...I thought they were suppose to be building it in the open space above subway, but I guess they decided to put it across the street in Exchange. If I were one of the students living about the nightclub I would not be very happy about this. I have many friends that live above Brubakers and they tell me that sometimes it gets so loud that they can barely get any sleep when they need to. I'd hate to think how loud a nightclub would be below them. I think the best option for that corner space would be either a nice sit down restaurant or perhaps a small convenient store. Bricco seems to get great business and I'm sure if you put more restaurants around, that area will have a lot of foot traffic. Does anyone know if Pablo's is open yet?

Not sure if I'm looking at this correctly..but I went into Akron's permit search and found this. From what I'm assuming from this they are building more lofts. :) http://www.ci.akron.oh.us/PermitSearch/AdvancedPlRvSearch.aspx

What was correct?! New living space or a boring and ugly parking deck/lot? lol
-
Akron: Random Development and News
That was demolished a few months ago...I really hope they start building something in those lots. That has to be the ugliest part of downtown, and its right next to best parts of downtown.

The building that was knocked down hasn't been the leasing office since the second half of the apartments opened up. 22 Exchange's leasing office is now on the first floor next to the weight room, and has been there since the second half opened. Downtown has a real advantage for students at this time looking to move. With all the crime that is happening south of Exchange St, I see no problem with developers having a hard time selling apartments downtown. Even with UA planning on building three new residents halls in the next 4-5 years I'm sure students would rather live downtown where they can walk easily to all the restaurants, clubs, and bars, and not to mention the rate that 22 Exchange goes for is equivalent or less than what it costs to live in a University residence hall. I really don't know what I think about LUX going in at 22 Exchange though. To be it seems like there would be too little room, and at the corner I think it would look a little trashy. If they are looking to add new apartments around the vicinity and getting close to 1000 people within those two blocks they should really look into getting a small market to fill that area to fulfill the needs of nearby residence.

My brother just moved into 22 Exchange and I talked to the people in the leasing office. At the time they only had two open rooms, but just because people had just moved out, so I'm sure by now they are all completely full. 22 Exchange is a great example that shows people are willing to live downtown. If they build another residential building at this space I agree it needs to be build higher, but it should also be a place that isn't just for students. They need to start making more affordable apartments downtown. I am graduating in May and I am hoping to find a job downtown. If I did find a job downtown it would be nice to live downtown as well, but currently I do not have many options.

I drove by there today and there were a couple utility trucks in front as well as an excavator. It looked like they were marking utility lines, so hopefully they will start moving some ground!

I agree..We do not need another surface lot going on this space. If they were to build more housing at this spot with shops and food underneath it like 22 exchange, it could a lot a lot to the area and compliment the AES building nicely. If they want parking they need to find a way to incorporate a building that includes both parking and residential.

Agency places UA land purchase in limbo School looks at options after being told to watch discretionary spending By Carol Biliczky Beacon Journal staff writer Officials at the University of Akron are deciding whether to reapproach a state agency for permission to buy property. ''We have several people reviewing it,'' UA President Luis Proenza said. ''The land continues to be part of our long-term strategic plan.'' The rest of the story can be found here --> http://www.ohio.com/news/115409104.html Really glad they are looking back into doing the Greek Village. Hopefull this will make campus look more inviting traveling North on Rt8.

I agree as well that the site looks amateurish. Though I have seen a lot worse, the least they could do was proofread it. "Our first-class entertainment destinations will grow Ohio's tourism market with tens of thousands of visitors from around the county." ^ Really?..Just the county?

I drove by the Landmark building tonight, and for the first time in awhile I actually saw lights on inside the first floor. I was able to catch a glimpse of ladders and other tools inside, and I think they may be beginning the asbestos removal process. Hopefully soon these places will be fixed up and utilized.

Anyone know anything about when construction is suppose to start? I thought it was suppose to be late Fall 2010...

Akron: University of Akron: Development and News
Yeah the plan that I saw also included brand new buildings with retail, restaurants, and apartments where the College Store, Starz Market, etc...is located now. I'm sure they accounted for the parking in this plan. I looked all night for the renderings I saw, but I can't remember where they were online. I'm sure these plans have gotten scrapped though.

I use to live in the Exchange St. Residence Halls a year ago and I never thought it was a big deal crossing the street with all the traffic. There are so many students however that are completely clueless to their surroundings and cross despite there being a car coming. Many of them are either texting or listening to music and have no awareness whatsoever. I agree it would be just a waste of money if UA were to build a walkway over Exchange St because no one is going to want to walk up and down stairs in the morning just to cross the street. Another thing I thought of today; Weren't they at a time planning on adding a median to Exchange St? I will try to find the renderings, but I could have sworn I saw those somewhere about a year ago. As for how old they are I'm unsure, but I really like the idea.

Looks like there will be a lot construction of new buildings on campus in the next couple years. This hasn't been talked about much on here, but a just saw plans for a brand new College of Engineering building that is suppose to be built on Wolf Ledges in the next year or so. The article I read said that there were three phases of construction and that the first phase should be complete in late 2011. They didn't say exactly where on Wolf Ledges, but I'm assuming it will be where that large surface lot is across from the engines testing facility. With that, on top of the new Law School building, it looks like that little stretch of Wolf Ledges will undergo some real changes soon. Also, I keep reading things on here saying that there are ideas being thrown around about changing or re-routing Exchange St. Does anyone have any additional details on this, or is able to elaborate a little deeper. I'm confused on how they would even alter Exchange St. that dramatically.

I really hope they have some sort of street presence with all of these buildings going in. They really need to put more shops and places to eat under these buildings.
