Goodyear & Glendale AZ - Spring Training Facilities - Reds/Indians Dodgers/Sox
I've been going to to Spring Training games for nearly 10 years now. Never get tired of it. Arizona has two new cities hosting teams. Goodyear with the Reds(2010) and that other Ohio team. Glendale with the Dodgers and White Sox(moved from Tucson). Goodyear is still a work in progress. It has a nice industrial look. Most of the practice fields for the Reds have yet to be built. Definitely has an incomplete feel, but I think it will come together nicely for 2010. Goodyear is more or less an exurb with farmland and open spaces. It's an easy drive, but is probably the furthest from the rest of the teams. About a 40 minutes drive from my home base of Scottsdale. Now Glendale is an absolute oasis. The stadium is one of the largest(13k+), interesting design, walking paths, orange grove, bandstand, and walk of fame. Each team has a practice field that is the exact dimensions of their respective home stadiums. A lake in the complex that is uses reclaimed water for the fields. Very impressive. Goodyear Ballpark Party decks are popular Some pretty boy who will probably start the season the minors. ;-) Party deck cleared out Got to keep the kids entertained "What is that thing" was heard a lot Plenty of Reds signage. In all it's 60' 6" glory More to come . . . Camelback Ranch Glendale

What goes around comes around. N. Ky. wants DHL back By James Pilcher • [email protected] • March 30, 2009 HEBRON - DHL Monday confirmed the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is being considered for the international shipping giant's U.S. sorting base, and has been approved for nearly $2 million in Kentucky state tax breaks to help with such a potential move. "DHL Express is investigating various options and carefully evaluating possible alternatives for its international express shipment sort operations, including the potential reactivation of the DHL facility at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)," the company said in a statement. "DHL has not made a decision on a location for its central sort facility. Rather, the incentive application is part of a broad exploration of all alternatives for the best operating platform for the US Express business." Senate OKs budget bill with local projects By Malia Rulon, Enquirer Washington Bureau • and The Associated Press • March 11, 2009 To read more: http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20090311/NEWS0108/903110314/ Cincinnati projects included in the bill by local lawmakers $2,871,000 - Ohio Riverfront (Sens. George Voinovich and Brown; Reps. Schmidt and Steve Chabot). Is this enough for the entire job? $475,000 - City of Cincinnati, property acquisition, demolition and remediation of the Queen City Barrel area to create an urban industrial park (Voinovich). Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Senator Seitz response asking him to support the 3-C Corridor. His issues sound familiar. Dear Mr. xxxxxx, Thanks for your email. The Ohio Hub is indeed an intriguing issue. As a legislator who regularly travels by car from Cincinnati to Columbus, I would probably be very interested in a good rail connection as it would free up my time to do work while traveling. Among the issues (besides cost) that we will have to examine on this proposal are whether the passenger rail connection would interfere with existing freight train lines and where the terminus point(s) would be in each of the cities. If the terminus is not at the right place (for example, if the Columbus terminus was at the airport) then it may not work since rail travelers would have to spend extra to get downtown, which would limit the attractiveness (and timeliness) of the rail alternative. Sincerely, William J. Seitz

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
From the Enquirers' Politics Extra Blog "Also Thursday, the federal government began to distribute mass transportation money for state and local infrastructure projects, totaling nearly $180 million for Ohio, including more than $20 million in the Cincinnati region. More details from the federal level can be found at www.recovery.gov." It's hard to find what specific project this would go to, but what else could it be?

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I just sent an email to my two Senators(Seitz and Kearney) asking for their support. Is it worth contacting House members? Looks like they already voted.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Oakiehigh posted an article that had this. . . "A 2004 study by Transportation Economics & Management Systems Inc. estimated that one-way rail fares between Cincinnati and Columbus would average $50. It would cost $95 one-way between Cincinnati and Cleveland, according to the study. Frequent rail users, students, senior citizens and weekend travelers would likely be offered lower fares." Granted the study is from 5 years ago. If $20 is the price point, that would be sweet.

How much did 5/3 get from TARP? That might cover their 4th quarter loss. They're still doing mortgages. I'm in the process of refinancing with them.

Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
^That's one of my pet peeves. You will not have access to the new bridge will from Queensgate or River Rd. Drivers will still have to go DT to hop on it. I guess that's what the city wants, but I don't see how that will help traffic flow. And I'm still amazed that the Clay Wade Bailey bridge isn't even part of the discussion.

US Economy: News & Discussion
I think this AP story offers a fair and balance account of why we're in this mess. The banks are still the center of the problem and evil Wall Street, without any gov. oversight, created all kinds of ways to line their pockets. The solutions are grim, but another major bank failure would be dire. A "bad bank" and/or nationalization seem to be the only viable solutions. Fortunately we have a gov. that will take action, not spend their time chopping down invasive plants on their farm. Feb 8, 8:11 AM EST The rise and (almost) fall of America's banks By STEVENSON JACOBS and ERIN McCLAM, Associated Press Writers . . .This January, the government took over six failed banks, including three on a single day. Last year, it took over a total of 25. When it happens, the government swoops in and try to minimize disruption. Recently, it has tended to close banks on a Friday and achieve something close to business as usual by Monday morning, arranging for other banks to take on the assets. ATMs have kept working, and people have had access to their cash. To read more: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BANKS_ON_THE_BRINK?SITE=OHCIN&SECTION=AMERICAS&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Kentucky: Triangle High-Speed Rail Project
Interesting. Why would Lexington want to connect to CVG? Do a lot of businesses from there use CVG already? The number of cities CVG offers flights to would make that worthwhile? And it would be ironic if people go to CVG to catch the train for a cheap flight out of Lexington. Not all these questions are meant to be answered, just thinking out loud.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like selective enforcement. I agree the lobby is awesome. There's usually a lot of eye candy to see before and after a show. Sometimes that's better than the shows themselves.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
there still is The lower level, right? I thought that was more of an all-round fitness center. Is that were UC's rowing team practices. I agree some basketball courts would be nice. If Sawyer Point can have tennis courts. A B-ball court or two could fit somewhere. How about the area near PBS where that cement/sand company is? I always thought that business was on borrowed time. Weren't condos consider there at one time. As long as a deep water pool isn't built, I'm all for more rec. activities down by the river. Didn't Seinfeld play softball in Manhattan? ;-)

A Little Help? Class Project Discussing the Popularity Downtown Cincy.
Another thing is the huge success of the redesign Fountain Square and all the restaurants/business it has spurred. If you have to focus on a problem, maybe how the recession is or has affected those surrounding businesses. I think the Gateway Quarter business district is unique and worth focusing on too. A lot good things are happening and momentum will be the key. Good luck with the project.
