  1. Not for long if CRC gets their way. I hear Ziegler Pool may be on the chopping block too. Not a good trade in my view: remove the amenity used by kids and families and get one that is for dogs. I am not a big city dog fan. But really, is OTR a place for kids?

Don't fall for this trap! The Reds do this every year. They're out of contention by the All-Star break, they're playing for nothing then they start winning and people, including ownership, think they're on the right track. Then they think this glorified scout should become manager, then the GM thinks all he has to do is sign a few forty-yr-old relievers and utility men and we're the Yankees. Don't fall for it. If this is what they do next year, I guarantee they will be out of contention by the All-Star break (again) and I'll become a Yankees fan.

I watched The Sentinel (starring Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Eva Logoria). It's about the Secret Service Agency trying to find a traitor planning on killing the President. The S.S. refer to the President and First Lady in code words. The First Lady's code word is Cincinnati. So you hear things like Cincinnati has left the building, Cincinnati has enter the car, and Cincinnati is going to the beach. Pretty cool. They even called her Cincy once. The best part of course is who played Cincinnati. Not too many people can measure up to the name Cincinnati, but <b>Kim Basinger</b> filled the position nicely. Now if the code name was Cleveland, only Betty White could play that role. ;-)
  4. I remember Nick Spencer(where did he go?) complained quite bit about Tender Mercies and their clients causing problems near his bar. I got the impression they aren't much better than the DIC. Just the sheer number of agencies in OTR has got to be discouraging.
  5. Problem is there's probably IS a convicted felons home in OTR along with a sexual predator home, a drug abuse home, a wife beaters home, an ADD home etc. Aren't there like 200+ in the area?? Then throw in Maximillian and Jimmy Skinner and look what you have. ;-) The ultimate in diversity. That's why I can't see OTR ever turning a corner.

Yeah, I'll miss it. There were flat out funny scenes then there were large chucks of dialogue where I had no idea what they were talking about. It was definitely odd. The end is near, indeed.
  7. I would certainly like to see Dollywood take the Aquarium in it's bosom and nurture it for future growth.
  8. I found the quotes from local medical professionals interesting. Maybe they're trying to prevent good old Si Leis from trying to shut down the show. I'm looking forward to this. 9. I've always heard Mt. Airy is a haven for casual gay sex. It a shame, it a nice park, but people stay away. Mount Airy sex arrests continue Two men were arrested Wednesday in Mount Airy Forest on charges of public indecency. Paul Court, 76, of Norwood and Ronald Thomas, 63, of East Price Hill, were charged in separate incidents. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070719/NEWS01/307190012

I would love to see the REDS move to AZ. Spring Training out there is great. I've been going for the last 7 yrs. AZ in March is amazing. The heck with FL. Spring training in Arizona? By Doug Sword Sarasota Herald-Tribune SARASOTA, Fla. - As spring training came to an end last year, there was unanimous political support to build a new baseball complex for the Cincinnati Reds in Sarasota. All five city commissioners and all five county commissioners were on board. Today, the $54 million project is a political longshot, perhaps as unlikely as an appearance by the last-place Reds in this year's World Series. Less than half of the financing is in place, and prospects of raising the rest are growing dimmer. Even the $10 million pledged by the city has been criticized by two city commissioners. Here's one from the NYTimes. A bit of a mix review. Pretty sharp design, IMO. Architecture Review | Akron Museum of Art A Fine View, on the Outside at Least By NICOLAI OUROUSSOFF Published: July 14, 2007 AKRON, Ohio, July 9 — The new addition to the Akron Museum of Art underscores how hard it can be to strike a balance between daring architecture and enjoyable spaces for viewing art. Designed by the Vienna-based Coop Himmelb(l)au, the building’s crystalline exterior and lobby, with their cascading sheets of glass, reflect an exuberant spirit of invention and openness. Unfortunately, that spirit stops at the gallery doors. After the initial euphoria of taking in the big public spaces, the galleries feel surprisingly drab. You’re left with the deflating impression that the client and the architect experienced a failure of nerve at the moment that mattered most. I'm officially addicted. The show is getting better and better. I think John is an Elder grad. Here's a few more clips.

  15. This will be watch closely. It better not turn into another LaShawn Pettus-Brown situation. The city can't be expected to drop a half mill on every abandoned building in OTR. They need to pick and choose what's worth saving.
  16. ^great work. You took a really ugly building (no offense) and made it something amazing(copper roof, nice). I took a look at your web page and seeing all the work involved, digging into bedrock, etc., that's heck of a lot of work. I can see why so many these building get torn down instead.
  17. Channel 5 has a frame by frame view of lighting hitting the Carew Tower and I believe the flag pole got fried. http://www.wlwt.com/slideshow/weather/11515119/detail.html Theres also a video, but I can't get it to work.
  18. "Arcosanti, an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona, 70 miles north of metropolitan Phoenix. Started in the 1970s, designed to house 5,000." Progress is slow going. I last visited this place over 5 year ago so I was curious what has been built since. Arcosanti is the vision of Paolo Soleri, who studied directly under one Frank Lloyd Wright. Soleri is an architect, artist, and dreamer. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times. Little, bald, Italian guy with big ideas. He gave a lecture on his "Linear City" which was and is very ambitious. To learn more: http://www.arcosanti.org/ To support Arcosanti, buy some very cool and manly windbells, http://www.cosanti.com/ Arcosanti is right off the highway exit, except there's a 2.5 mile dirt, bumpy driveway to maneuver. Watch out for wild animals. 2.5 miles later, we arrived. The tour starts at the back of the main buildings. This is the back end of the residential area for people that work and live here. I think these are new, I don't remember seeing them 5 yrs ago. These are what pay the bills. An interesting landscape with decent views. This is one of many workshops where they make the various windbells, art, etc. There are a small row of hotel rooms below the main buildings and right below this pool. Cheap rates, $25-$40. There are organized tours, but we missed it so we wondered around. Roof line of some more residential living areas. Another group of resident homes (front). A place to entertain. A place to play.

Uhhh, that's the Clay Wade bridge in front of PBS. I would love to see that bridge disappear. With it there it makes a "architecturally dynamic" Brent Spence kind of unnecessary.
  22. I have to agree with Mr. Redmond on this. Maybe it's a culture clash, but the idea that residents in the area have to tolerate being rob at gun point or have their car set on fire seems absurd. Yes, I know stairs don't rob people, but if they create an unpleasant environment then something needs to be done. Having the resident just deal with it will chase them away and the city can ill afford that.
  23. This really does seem like a no brainer. I love this bit. "Several employees of NIOSH's two labs in Cincinnati also recommended the Clifton site, with some saying they didn't want to drive 30 miles to Clermont County."
  24. ^I'm always been curious how much payroll tax the Bengals and Reds generate. That 2.1 tax on those million dollar salaries should generate something. Of course, Mike Brown probably doesn't receive a salary and lives off of a trust. Then when he dies his family is going to bitch and moan about the "death" tax they have pay . . .when he isn't paying anything now.
  25. ^Thanks for the details. That's why I posted here instead of the crime thread. I thought only rednecks shot guns in air during New Years. Fireworks sure, guns - no thanks.
