Cleveland Guardians Discussion
<i>I can definitely recommend Spring Training in AZ. I've been going out there for the past 5 five years. It's a great way to shake off the winter blues. http://www.cactusleague.com/</i> Indians reach spring training agreement <i>Bob Baum</i>, Associated Press, Dec. 21, 2006 06:31 PM PHOENIX - The Cleveland Indians are moving back to Arizona for spring training. The Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority approved a funding plan with city officials Tuesday outlining the details of funding for a spring training facility for the Indians in the west Phoenix suburb of Goodyear. The team hopes to play there in the spring of 2009. The Indians trained in Tucson, Ariz., until 1993. Their current spring home is in Winter Haven, Fla. --AP writer Meredith Heagney in Columbus, Ohio, contributed to this story. To read more: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/articles/1221springtraining-ON.html Goodyear likely to get Cactus League park Sports authority reworks numbers, says it can fund both SW Valley, Glendale stadiums <i>Carrie Watters, The Arizona Republic</i> Dec. 20, 2006 12:00 AM Goodyear is expected to receive public funding for a spring training facility for the Cleveland Indians this week, although it might be a few million dollars less than requested. The quest for funding was shaping up as a competition between Goodyear and Glendale, which wants to build a facility shared by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. Larry Landry, chairman of the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority board, said Monday that enough funding exists to push both plans forward, although Goodyear would get funding for a one-team, not a two-team, facility. I never had a cell phone, but I will now. Being a life long Apple fan and user (and stock owner) this will give me a reason to make the jump. I've had a 2nd Gen iPod for 4 years with no problems including drops and placing it the freezer (don't ask). I think iPods average a failure rate of 2% or so. Far below average from what I understand.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
I'm just a casual college football fan and the BCS/Bowl system is why. Can a playoff system be that terrible? What are the OSU and Michigan players doing for nearly 6 weeks? Getting educated, curing cancer, Christmas shopping. Would playing 2 or 3 more games be so terrible? I can see to office pools forming already . . .

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
<i>Some possible changes in store for Burnet Woods. I always kept my distance from this park during my days at UC. </i> Park Won't Take Houses Burnet Woods to change, but no eminent domain <i>By Margo Pierce</i> Whatever improvements come to Burnet Woods, they won't involve the use of eminent domain to displace any neighbors, according to people involved in the planning process. A proposal no longer under consideration had included the possible redevelopment of part of Bishop Street, generating concern among people who live there. A group of 22 neighbors met Dec. 3 with the intention of starting to organize opposition, which they learned late last week is unnecessary. To read more: http://www.citybeat.com/current/news2.shtml

Cincinnati: General Transit Thread
<i>Some very interesting gossip from CityBeat regarding a member of the SORTA board.</i> SORTA Troubling Revealing messages from or elaborate smear of transit board member? <i>By Kevin Osborne</i> Stephan Louis was quickly reappointed last month to the board overseeing the Metro bus system, just before computer messages were made public that indicate he might have a hidden agenda on transportation issues. In one of his final actions before leaving office, Hamilton County Commission President Phil Heimlich worked with his fellow Republican to reappoint Louis, a controversial critic of light rail, before the GOP loses its majority on the county commission. Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
<i>Come on Cincy and Hamilton Country, screw Clermont.</i> NIOSH narrows site search for $70M headquarters Cincinnati Business Courier - 7:13 PM EST Tuesday by <b>Dan Monk</b>, <i>Senior Staff Reporter</i> Three Clermont County sites and at least one in the city of Cincinnati are among several on a short list for a $70 million complex for two research laboratories operated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. NIOSH has tapped the U.S. General Services Administration to conduct the search for a 14-acre site where it can consolidate its Robert A. Taft and Alice Hamilton laboratories. The search attracted more than a dozen proposals from developers all over the Tri-State. Owners were notified by GSA Dec. 1 that several of the sites have been identified for further study. http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2006/12/04/daily19.html?jst=b_ln_hl

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Washington Park
I think vinyl siding only applies to low income folks that live in Historic Districts which OTR has plenty of. Really, have you seen some of the rehabs done for low income folks? No one seems to be complaining about that. Yet, people get all hot and bother by any new construction in OTR.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
The Pro Shop already has the new jerseys for sale. http://shop.mlb.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2566634 They are somewhat of an improvement except the "Alternative". I never like the all red jersey. I didn't care for the Reds in pin stripes so the new home jersey is better. Their old road uniforms were may favorite and I'm not sure the new version works for me. Until we see how good they look on Javier Valentin, I'll try to reserve judgment.

5th and Race condos in works By Joe Wessels, Post contributor A piece of prime downtown real estate may soon become the first housing development designed for and specially marketed to young professionals. The two-acre parcel at Fifth and Race streets - now a parking lot after several attempts to jumpstart development on the site fizzled, including a bid to bring a Nordstrom store to the site in 2000 - will be home to a $100 million condo high-rise that will cater to young professionals, several sources have confirmed. Western-Southern Financial Group subsidiary Eagle Realty has been working privately on the 15- to 20-story project that would mimic other similar projects around the country that have been successful, a source close to the project said. The company has held exclusive development rights to the site since about 1994. In August, acting city Manager David Rager gave Eagle 12 months to come up with development plans for the space. He rejected a request by the company to extend development rights on the spot. Read full article here: http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061129/NEWS01/611290374

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
<i>"Thousands of renters receiving federal rent subsidies left the neighborhood."</i> - Wow, that's an eye opener . I've always heard that when given a chance, low income people would bail on OTR. And yet the agencies stay. <i>"The neighborhood’s rapid growth makes some people worry that low-income families will be pushed out."</i> - This is an automatic response by some people. Are these same people oblivious to the fact that thousands left OTR by choice? <i>"This time, the biggest threat to revitalization . . . from Over-the-Rhine’s buildings themselves. Many sat vacant for so long that they are on the verge of collapse . . ."</i> - Of course this is the most ironic part of all. The "I-Team" will have an update on their Vine Street story from a few years ago. There also is a link about their "Vision of Vine" story. http://wcpo.com/wcpo/localshows/iteam/visionsofvine/. The link also contains previous stories they did about OTR. There were a few I wasn't aware of. Is Verdin Bell still in Pendleton? They threaten to leave in 2002. I'm convinced that only large scale development like what 3CDC has planned can save OTR. <b>Visions Of Vine Street Sequel Documentary To Air This December</b> The I-Team's Laure Quinlivan investigates what's changed on Vine and Main streets since the 2001 riots rocked the heart of our city. This special newscast segment airs on 9News Sunday, November 26 @ 11 p.m. and Monday, November 27 @ 6 p.m. Also, join WCPO for a special I-Team documentary, a half-hour sequel to the 2001 documentary, Tuesday, December 5, from 9:30 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Cincinnati: City Budget and Spending News & Discussion
Huh?, not at all. The United Way recently (a year or two ago?) changed the procedures on how and who they give their donations to. They tighten their guidelines so as not to piss their hard earn dollars away, i.e. even the United Way doesn't find all Social Service Agencies doing wonderful things and has even lower or even dropped funding to some agencies. And it sounds like that's what the City of Cincy is doing too.
