Why are they making the new building look so different from the rest of these buildings? Won't that disrupt the continuity?
  2. I'd heard that someone up at the top of the Tim Horton's organization was married to Wendy Thomas (Dave's daughter....the original Wendy). Then again, that could be urban legend.
  3. My father, a current Bexley resident, is very excited about this place because he wants to stay in the area, but wants to take care of a smaller property as well. I bet a lot of people who want to still be a part of the Bexley community when the kids move out will want to live there. I can't imagine, though, it's set to attract too many people who would ordinarily buy houses of equal price elsewhere in Bexley.

As someone knew to the area, are there some general info websites about the candidates and their positions? Are the Ohio Democratic Party and the Ohio Republican Party endorsing specific candidates? Can you register to vote in this state when you get your driver's license, or do I have to go to a library? Granted I don't have a television, but I haven't seen or heard anything with regards to the election that I haven't actively sought out.
  6. Granted, I am only a few years from college myself, but IKEA does have some pretty nice stuff, if you want to search for it. Also, the market is well beyond college students. My mother and most of her friends in LA have entire rooms, if not houses, furnished primarily by IKEA. Fight Club's first scene is about the Ikea lifestyle of the urban professional, ps.
  7. Growing up, when we came to visit relatives, my favorite restaurant in Cleveland (and I am sure this was just because they gave me all the free pickles I could eat as a kid) was Corky and Lenny's. Does anyone know which of its two locations from the mid '80s are still open? I had heard one of them closed about 10 years ago.
  8. They are building some permanent parking below the viaduct, but I am not sure if it will be leased parking only for the residents (we only get one parking space per suite, regardless of the number of bedrooms). I was told that the parking on top of the viaduct would not be permanent when I originally went to visit/put a suite under contract. Don't know if that has changed. There already is some green space across the street on the flats level from the building, but I don't believe it is an established park as such. I'd love to see some retail, though in the area, as I think the residents need something more than an art gallery and a salon (Lipstick and Razorblades).
  9. Stonebridge also just updated their website, and are now doing condos on Floors 7-11 (the 11th being 2 story penthouse), rather than the 8-11 as previously advertised. I went up to check out the progress on my place, and the whole building looked quite a bit better than I had expected. My only complaint (having not moved in yet) is that the bedroom walls are oddly angled, so furniture placement is difficult in a small room. As far as I could tell inside the building, the 10th floor and up are totally done (and sold), and the rental units in the bottom are done, but the intermediate floors still need a lot of work (namely, finishing the walls, plumbing, granite installation, lighting, etc.). When I get up there, I'll try to take some pics from inside to show views and anything else people want to see.
  10. Filmed in? A Christmas Story!

I agree that retention is key, but also, Cleveland area businesses need to recruit in the top schools around the country. Only one Cleveland-located office came to recruit at my Ivy, and it is a branch office of an Chicago firm. Now, I don't know how to convince these companies to recruit, but retaining local students and increasing visibility amongst top students may be a large step forward toward any objective Cleveland desires.

I see one of the problems here in trying to define Cleveland is that there is no concerted message being broadcast consistently. Fragmented messages, while providing the opportunity to appeal individually to a large number of people, do not allow for brand development. Cleveland is described variably across these threads as a college town, a high-tech (or bio-tech) wonderland, a manufacturing town, etc. I think someone with a modicum of power or money in the area needs to decide what the desired image is, then work toward that goal. More specifically to the idea of what creates a college town, I think national, positive recognition is the key. If we have to remind each other of the universities or campuses in the area, that's not a good thing.
  13. Well, I went to college in New Hampshire (so I am ready for the snow), and presently I am living in North Carolina for graduate school. I am very excited to come back to Ohio -- to the amazement of my predominantly New Yorker friends. Given that I am relatively young, my concerns mostly center around how to best utilize the resources of downtown and hidden treasures that resident Clevelanders know about, but are hidden to newcomers. Also, I have conflicting reports as to what the area near Stonebridge is like in the warmer months. My father's friends were concerned I moved in there, but, although all of them were from Cleveland, none have resided there for 30 years. Kids I know at Kent State paint a slightly different picture.
  14. How do we go about convincing the powers that be to make a pathway from Stonebridge/the viaduct to a place to get to the east bank? I ask, self interestedly, as a new owner of a condo in the building... Also, I am moving to Cleveland after not being in Ohio since I graduated high school (Bexley, in Columbus). Anything of which I should be aware?
