I am looking for a good educational law attorney in the Cleveland area.
I don't know any education lawyers, but perhaps you could try emailing David Carney or Daniel Jaffe, who teach education law at Case Western? I don't know either of them personally, just a suggestion. http://law.case.edu/FacultyResearch/MeetOurFaculty/FacultyDetail.aspx?id=92 - Carney http://law.case.edu/FacultyResearch/MeetOurFaculty/FacultyDetail.aspx?id=884 - Jaffe Also, you can always email the Cleveland Metro Bar Association and ask to be referred to someone who practices education law. http://www.clemetrobar.org/Contact_Us.aspx

Cleveland: Cleveland Critical Mass (Group Bicycling)
Hey. I just saw critical mass go past me while I was driving. I don't really mind waiting a few minutes for them to pass by, but I saw some things that concerned me. First, there were some riders who just...should not have been riding. One guy face-planted in front of the car waiting in front of me, for no reason I could determine, another girl veered off the road and just gave up. There were a few kids riding very small bikes...and while I agree it SHOULD be safe for them, I'm not sure it is. Also, I saw a girl talking on her cellphone while riding. If that's not safe in a car, there's no way it's safe on a bike. That one really annoyed me. Some riders were careful to wave politely and were going at a good pace, and wearing helmets. Many had no helmets. Second, the CM group was very spread out. This was at W. 28th/Detroit, and whenever I expected that the group had passed, one or two more riders would come along. Is this because of cars breaking up the group, or are riders really that different in terms of speed? I was getting a little annoyed by the end, since none of the bikes stop for red lights, and at that intersection in particular, with the horrible freeway interchange, it was getting pretty backed up by the end. As far as I could see, nobody was 'corking' the intersection, but I couldn't really see around the tank in front of me. Anyway, just curious - I'd love for you all to have more bike lanes.

Looking at the injury/DL list is depressing. Half the starting lineup is out: Brantley, Sizemore, Hafner, Kipnis, Choo. Fukudome is a decent outfielder, but our ENTIRE starting outfield is out, along with our DH and our best young hitter. Even with Thome, I'd be shocked if we made the playoffs.

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
We already have large tracts of new land available residential along the lake. It's called Battery Park. And after 5 years it's not even half sold. I don't think creating new land for development is a real essential component of the project. You're only thinking about the actual mainline conversion into a boulevard and missing the critical interchange at 73rd which is essential to Gordon Square and the surrounding community. The interchange at 25th/28th is such a nightmare for vehicle & pedestrian traffic I can't believe it hasn't been redone already. These are the essential portions of the project, not the actual boulevard construction. The multi-use path you're dismissing would allow biking/jogging along the lake from downtown to Edgewater which currently doesn't exist - another key component of the plan, which as many have pointed out, exists in other cities like Baltimore, Chicago, Milwaukee, etc. I'm fairly sure Battery Park is doing very well in terms of selling built units. It isn't entirely built, but what is built is mostly sold. I agree completely about the exchange at 25th/28th. It SUCKS. Needs a total rework.

Even for his age, he is immediately the best slugger on the roster, at .476, only Kipnis has him beat, and he's hurt. As long as the 'player to be named' is absolutely nobody of consequence, it's a good, if desperate, move.

Everyone handles pressure differently. I'm not sure we want Ubaldo to go nuclear when he gets off the mound. Personally, I still don't see how this team can win the division. Detroit is better; Chicago is arguably better. And Cleveland is no longer playing to its own potential. Make me wrong, guys.

Ice Cream? It's too big for that. Hope they aren't paying too much in rent if that's the case.

Career Networking / Job Posting Thread
I posted about this once before, but in the interest of leaving no stone unturned, I'm curious if anyone in the Cleveland area has any further advice or knows of any opportunities. I'm a law student at Case Western and would like to stay in the Cleveland/Akron area (possibly Pittsburgh as well?), I know the legal market is difficult at the moment, but I have a fair bit of experience, including some strong Partner references, and am a very good writer/document drafter. I'm interested in working for either a law firm or a federal government office located in this area. If anyone knows of anything I should be looking into beyond the usual, please let me know.

Hafner is not the problem. He's hitting almost .300 despite being physically worn and perennially injured. Tonight, fielding and pitching are the problem. I know we take great catches for granted, but there have been a lot of near-misses and Jimenez is making a really bad pitch for every really good pitch he makes. Edit: Another problem is this umpire. The strike zone for Floyd is far too generous.

Great, one inning and two errors. Textbook example of how to lose. Edit: I guess Brantley's bobble was inconsequential enough not to be an error, but still.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
Getting under your skin is what sports writers specialize in, these days...they know more people will respond and share the link if they stir up controversy. There is zero chance of the Cavaliers being contracted, at least this decade.

Three no-decisions in his last four starts, all of which the Indians ended up winning. Rough.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
A lot of those are positions that not only don't need to be concentrated in a single building, but are not really able to be - the Coroner, the Sheriff, etc. I think we'd be lucky to get a large majority in Cleveland, let alone in a single building.

Just from a plain reading, isn't that for the Market Garden Brewery, and they're re-classifying it to conform with parking requirements since they don't have any and basically share with the WSM/W 25th? Looks that way. Maybe they got a notice they weren't in compliance or something.

US Economy: News & Discussion
I am not sure it will ever 'end'. This is the new reality, masked for a decade by irresponsibly loose fiscal and regulatory policies in many of the largest economies. It is possible for a few ambitious workers to out-produce many, many others, and too many workers are stuck in a mindset of mid-20th century education/compensation relationship where one person can guarantee a good job simply by being a fairly hard worker and not screwing up too badly. The government is asleep at the wheel, deadlocked by bitter divisions between too much deregulation and too much protectionism, and a political climate that is highly destructive and inefficient. Free trade has any good features, but one that isn't so good is that human capital is inevitably going to become much, much cheaper as educated people from other countries take advantage of opportunities to produce, market, and sell products and services at much lower prices - and, eventually, similar quality. The question is where the 'new normal' will be - will wages in China rise so far that America can actually compete in basic manufacturing again? Will prices fall so much that a lower-paying job is no longer an impossible burden for an American family? Or will soaring health insurance and education costs wipe out all the gains in one fell swoop? I'm not optimistic. Wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of the very rich. Even Henry Ford knew that his workers had to be able to afford his product if he was going to be able to market the Model T to the common man. Nowadays, the common man can't afford much of anything - and that dramatically retards economic growth over the long term.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Do it. He has a massive majority in both houses to help him. Kasich has the ability and the attitude to make sweeping changes, and the school district system is in dire need of them. I don't agree with all of SB 5, but if some of the teacher provisions stick, and this happens - I think it could be a good thing. But what it may end up as is forced marriages between successful districts and unsuccessful ones. If someone tried to merge my old district with one particular district bordering us (not Cleveland) I would throw a fit because it would mean we'd never again pass a school levy. It's going to take a LOT of work to do this because each situation is different, and finding a set of conditions under which districts will be merged will be very difficult. One size doesn't fit all, but everyone will demand equal treatment, resulting in gridlock. So there will have to be some nominal 'winners' and 'losers'. So it goes...the funding just doesn't work with the suburban development model. Consolidation is a must.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
I think we have a real chance of winning the Central. I am more afraid of CHW than I am of DET. I would call the White Sox the prohibitive favorites despite their current position. They did not unload their talent and are going for it. They can do it. So can we. Jimenez Trade: Overall, I like it. He may not be the model of consistency, but for the price, we got a very talented guy with a favorable contract. We paid dearly, but in a currency we can afford to spend right now, and one the Rockies wanted. We have a good bullpen, we needed an ace. We got one. And, we sent a signal to everyone on the team - we want to win, now. That's not a signal many of these guys have gotten in their few years here. Also, we did not give up people like Kipnis or Chisenhall, which leaves some faint hope one of them will emerge into a real offensive complement to A-Cab among the infielders. Well done, Antonetti. Fukudome: Not bad - we definitely needed someone out there. If Sizemore comes back and is productive, the outfield is good enough to support a run for the division. It's the infield that's really lacking. O-Cab to SF: Whatever. I liked him, but it made sense if SF gave us someone good. Offensively, it's probably a wash, Kipnis can probably hit .240 with some time to adjust. No sense keeping O-Cab around if he's not going to outdo the prospects. If there was money to add another serious bad/serious starter, or if Sizemore/Santana were even close to living up to their abilities, I think this team would be a sure bet to win the Central. As it is, I think we have about even odds of pulling it off. If that puts people in the seats - it's worth it. And Jimenez isn't that expensive for what he could be.

Walkscore's 2011 Rankings
Still rocking it at 85/100 in Ohio City. Edit: E 4th Street is now a 98/100! I don't think it's that much better than OC, but ok.

Hope the new buyer is more on the ball. Milsaps is clearly not the new buyer, and anything he posted on his website was delusion or outright falsehood. He seems pretty obsessed, though. I enjoy his lawyer dismissing it as "pure puffery".

One or two decent chains in there wouldn't hurt. The reasonably priced dining options for those of us at Law/Business School are too few and not good enough. If Panera is really going in there, it's going to make a killing.
