Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
Most of the people I met who own apartments downtown during my apartment hunt are trying to sell them. At the same time, they are having no problem renting them.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Cleveland still has to develop its identity and then bring in people who are interested in pursuing that. We can retain manufacturing and even expand it, but we need to keep pushing healthcare hard, and to really have a worldwide healthcare hub, we need locals who are going to provide some of the revenue, not a shrinking population that will lead our institutions to continually spread themselves out farther and farther in search of profit. The bottom line is people, it's always going to be people. Why is China exploding? People + capital! There are so many people who suddenly have access to economic opportunity, that even if individually they make small gains, the net effect is tremendous and creates a thriving, surging core. The US is still drowning in money, even in a recession, but growth stalls in regions like this because we can't seem to bring new institutions or people here. There are still hundreds of millions of people looking for new opportunity, but we're caught up in a losing battle to preserve, protect, defend, etc...bring in the new, or there won't be anyone left to appreciate the old. I say immigration built the city, and immigration (or intra-state migration, whatever) can save the city.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Parents lived near Cleveland; father went to CSU, worked downtown. When they married, they immediately found a good suburban school system and settled there. It's not just a factor, for many, it's *the* factor. Dad commuted a stupid distance every day so I'd have a good public school system.

Shot in the dark: Any lawyers around? I have 2+ years work experience as a paralegal in major int'l law firms and am a Cleveland native. I'm currently a first year student at Case Western Law. Am interested in putting down roots in Cleveland but for now just looking for good professional internship experience.

US Economy: News & Discussion
You think the NYSE will almost double this year? Do you mean the DJIA? I think 14k is very optimistic even for that. I would be THRILLED with 13k. 14k...break out the Cristal, man.

Cleveland area: Who remembers when...
I'm not old, but I was at opening day at Jacobs Field, third base side behind the dugout (thanks, dad) and it was a perfect game - one of many, many come-from-behind victories that became almost routine for that team. Wayne Kirby won it with a single in the bottom of the 9th. Still have the ticket, framed.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
buckeye, thanks for that review, I live near there and will check it out. I dined at Lola on E. 4th recently and was very impressed. No surprise, I know, but many of my friends have been less than impressed with some of the 'highlight' restaurants in town and I thought I'd mention that both Lola and Lolita are absolutely as good as advertised. I haven't been to Lolita in awhile, but it was good last time. Service was extraordinary, food was extraordinary, drinks were excellent. Obviously, it's expensive.

Urban Wal-Marts considered in New York and DC, Ohio next?
I occasionally visit places like this, but only when I have no alternative, which is rare. They're time-consuming because you have to drive there, you have to hike within the store, and they never have enough checkout lines. I'm not convinced anyone saves very much time doing their shopping under one gigantic roof. I'm not totally opposed to the idea if there's no alternative for development...but there's usually an alternative.

Who is generally more knowledgeable about their city? -- Cleveland
Grew up in the suburbs but parents were born in inner ring suburbs. Know a lot more about Cleveland than many of my friends growing up. Doesn't hurt that dad was an architect.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
I rent in OC, I like my place, but I agree the choices are a bit limited. Not horribly, though. If you look, there are quite a few places, though this time of year many of the good ones are off the market. By the way, there will be a beer garden with outdoor portion soon right next to WSM, and Garage Bar has a patio, and so does Dragonfly. The outdoor stuff is always going to be a bit limited given the space restrictions and the fact they can only really use them 2/3 of the year. Some more trees by WSM would be nice, and a facelift for the market itself and the clock tower. Overall I'm very pleased. I have way too many shopping choices for food, several good restaurants and bars, a coffee place, barber, great lakes, and I'm within a quick drive of pretty much everything. Long-term, I'd like if there were some more townhome options, like the poster above. I've chatted with a couple residents who rented/owned houses and they complained about bums repeatedly and brazenly trespassing and stealing things from garages/porches, but no serious B&E or violence. Obviously apartments are far lower maintenance and the worst I've had is mild annoyance that my building doesn't have a garage.

Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering
Kucinich's district is DOA because Civil Rights law don't allow anti-minority gerrymandering, which means that even if they wanted to, they can't 'crack' the east side of Cleveland. Instead, it'll expand slightly in area, and Sutton's district will absorb most of Kucinich's.

Youngstown-Warren: General Business & Economic News
This is the most surprising of any of the projects on here. This proves a number of things, many of them which contradict a lot of the political talking points from both sides. 700 jobs is a fairly sure thing, then? I'll assume the 3,500 number is "highest possible in the extreme long term where everything goes perfectly". Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a .65 B investment and around 1,000 jobs a massive shot in the arm for Youngstown?
