Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
The focus on Chicago as -the- midwestern hub makes some sense, but the cascading effect of delays and cancellations seem to make a focus on any one airport very risky. Don't airlines absolutely hemorrhage dollars when they get multiple delays/cancellations? It's one thing if your hub is in a very arid, calm area, but Chicago is anything but. (not that CLE is an ideal alternative in terms of weather) I think CLE could do a lot better for itself, but circumstances aren't lending themselves to helping Hopkins very much. If Cleveland turns around, the airport will follow. If the government wants to invest in subsidized routes (ie, an international route) to improve business travel, that's worth debating, but it's not a permanent solution.

Cuyahoga County Executive
It's tone-deaf, and given the formality of the meeting, it might be borderline illegal. Her response shows she has no idea what people want from the council, even if her intentions are good. "Leadership is not the public's business." Technically correct - we don't pick the symbolic council 'leader', for whatever that even means, but a stupid, stupid statement. It starts the process off wrong. Obviously a democrat is going to be president. Oh no, the mere possibility of a republican having a mostly symbolic role? PANIC! SECRET MEETING! I think Fitzgerald should step in and invite one of the Republicans to be the council leader and dare the council to defy him. I voted all Republican for County Council, and I rarely vote for any R candidates not named Voinovich. Because I sort of knew how this would go.

Cleveland Area: American Greetings HQ relocation?
Right. I live in OC and I consider it very downtown. :) With regard to AG, my point is that there are perfectly legitimate reasons companies such as Eaton and AG may prefer suburban locations, regardless of their configurations, and while most of us are eager to see development focused on the city, we can't lose sight of the motivations and incentives that are driving companies away from the city. I don't think anyone has surrendered here and Fitzgerald/Kasich's prompt visit is encouraging. Hopefully they will stay in Brooklyn or at least not leave the county.

Cleveland Area: American Greetings HQ relocation?
^^^ I'm considering this from the perspective of the company that would be moving there. The city might say, well, we're going to entice more companies down here and such and so forth, and that's great, but what should be obvious by now is that businesses don't give a hoot about long-term urban development goals and want solid long-term deals in areas they're sure they're going to be happy with. So, that makes it very hard for Cleveland to 'sell' an area like Midtown when it has to compete with Beechwood, C. Highlands, Westlake, etc. It has access and proximity to downtown, and probably tax breaks galore, but even though I agree it could be a great area, at the present it remains a hard sell. I would be interested to learn more about why businesses are reluctant to relocate downtown. I am not focusing on the negative merely because I brought it up. And as for young people preferring to live downtown, I live downtown and can attest to that, but for every one of me there are four or five other people my age (late 20's) who are happy as clams in the suburbs, even the far out ones. I don't get why they prefer that, but many people seem to, including people who work in the heart of downtown.

Cleveland Area: American Greetings HQ relocation?
As a young professional, I would prefer my business not be located in Midtown. Seriously, what is this 'Midtown' other than words and a few isolated placards along the roadside? There's nothing there. What am I going to eat? Where am I going to park? The need for a campus is even more compelling if you want to locate it there, because the surrounding area offers almost nothing. If they want to bulldoze a huge area and put up a campus (or use any of the vast open spaces on Chester/Euclid), that's great, please, do so. The city should make it virtually free for them to do so. Because that area ranks about as low in desirability as I can imagine. Someone has to go first, but there is no reason for AG to feel like that's a good idea without a seriously big carrot.

Cleveland Area: American Greetings HQ relocation?
If you read the article, you will notice that a goal of selecting the location is to maximize the ability to attract creative talent for the workforce. The eastern suburbs are more desirable, especially for creative/arts people relocating from other areas. Downtown is getting better but it's not there yet. (imo)

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I would take a direct flight at a premium any day over a connection. Who wouldn't? Unless the price gap is well over a hundred dollars, the trouble/risk of delay/luggage issues aren't worth it. I'd like to see a direct flight added somewhere else overseas. Either restore London or add Hong Kong or something. (I confess I have no idea what the demand trends towards)

Cincinnati Census Predicitions
More offices are going to be more, not less, expensive. Many state government functions are already farmed out along the lines you suggest, but to much smaller towns than Dayton and Youngstown. We do not need more government jobs. Keep most of the ones we have, sure, but the priority is a robust private sector. It's a lot easier and more productive for workers to move between private sector jobs than it is to move government workers around by shuffling the deck.

And here it is. I feel like a lot of these announcements are premature. We always end up feeling like things are 'delayed' interminably because there isn't actually a deal yet. Still, it's good almost-news.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Uh, I'm all for the 3C thing and I think Kasich is a blithering idiot for making this his cause celebre, but "limitless economic development"? There is a legitimate question to be asked - where do we get the maintenance dollars? That at least could have been debated. Instead, it's "kill the project". Still, on topic, I don't like Kasich's attitude so far. This is why I voted against him. He's for a number of things I'm also for, but...ugh. Throwing away rail in the name of earmark reform. Viva America...where the trains are slower than in China. I would be alright with this if he deferred, not canceled, the 3C project and used the money for general infrastructure improvement, forward budget planning and maintenance instead. I wouldn't like it, but I'd accept it. Just canceling it and not getting the money is stupid.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Actually, I agree that if we're going to have public assistance, welfare, etc. - it should be tied to some sort of very basic ethical/moral framework. Charity traditionally went through the churches. If the state (or corporation) is really going to supplant them, they need to adopt a basic, secular guideline by which progress is measured in ways other than just bottom lines and dollar amounts. Dollars aren't a bad measure, really, but they aren't the only one. And it would be nice if the prisons actually did rehabilitate more than a few criminals. But that IS a pure money problem. There's no way to pay for it...

Consider that both Dolan and Fitzgerald said they would bring Scipione on as chief of staff. Lanci said he'd pick McCormack. So we know who's friendly with who. I like Scipione and Fitz. I am conflicted about Dolan and Lanci, but I'll probably end up voting for one of them. I think Dolan's attacks on Fitz are total BS, but I don't care. I want a fresh face in there. I actually like that I haven't seen a single poll on this. Hate to admit it, but I think polling affects my decisions sometimes. Lanci seems honest and straightforward, and I like the no salary thing as well, gimmicky though it may be...but I've heard a lot of good things from Dolan. I liked him in his interview on WCPN. Plus, maybe if we vote for him, daddy will buy some new pitchers for the Indians. This is the only one I haven't made up my mind yet on. I will do some more reading and sleep on it, but I think it's Dolan or Lanci. edit: As for Dolan moving into the county...I don't blame him for living outside of it. Many friends and relatives left the county. I would applaud them for moving back if they sincerely wanted to make a difference through public service. Many good politicians have done things like this and been wildly popular/successful afterwards.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
^ Having lived in DC, I can assure you that a traffic circle will feature plenty of that 'big city' traffic feel and actually channel the traffic much more efficiently. I also, however, question the necessity of a PS redesign given that alternative public spaces exist and are being/should be renovated (mall, lakefront). But if it were to be done, I would go by the traffic circle way, no question. Larger spaces mean more potential public uses of that space. With the roads cut out and assuming the corners cut off for the rounded roads, PS would be larger than many urban centers, such as Jackson Square in NOLA, Pioneer Square in Portland, and Dupont Circle in DC. But honestly, even if the entire area were converted into a park and plaza, it's not going to increase the utility THAT much, the area doesn't offer much potential for multiple uses, at best it's a strolling, sitting, and performance/display area. It would be hugely expensive and disruptive in the short run.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I never thought I would say this, but I agree with you. There is a small problem, IIRC, is superior cannot be buried until West of West 6. I like the concept, but is there enough room to have superior go underground at E 6th and come back up at W. 6th? And really - pretty expensive for public square. I agree that we should do it right or not do it at all, but I don't see a proper revamp getting done so long as the economy is bad.
