  1. Seems like there is no effective leadership in Dayton at all, if a contractor can brush aside a violation of procedure like this. Will there even be serious consequences for this?

Put Chris Grant on the floor and let's boo him...what a disaster.
  3. Greatest post on this forum IMHO.
  4. Take a poll, see who wants East Cleveland, and give them East Cleveland if the residents are willing by a simple majority. My guess: Cleveland is more willing than Cleveland Heights. And, given that UC is in Cleveland, it might make more sense. Allowing UCI to redevelop a lot of EC makes sense.
  5. Plan would result in Cleveland picking up $30 million of FirstEnergy Stadium's $120 million makeover 5:06 pm, November 19, 2013 The Cleveland Browns' $120 million proposal to upgrade FirstEnergy Stadium moved a step closer to being a fancy reality. Mayor Frank Jackson and the Browns announced an agreement under which the NFL team would invest $120 million up front for the upgrades, with the city paying $2 million a year for the next 15 years toward those upgrades from its operating fund. The agreement, which needs the approval of Cleveland City Council, represents a present-day value of $22 million in expenses for the city, because Cleveland would be making annual payments until the late 2020s. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20131119/FREE/131119772
  6. I think you were right to be excited as well, Klingaling87. Really tough crowd, haha. I think it's quite good! And like KJP, I would speculate the Justice Center is at fault for having the tower on the mall. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised.
  7. Virtually none. All the law firms were already downtown, as was E&Y.

If Bynum is able to contribute 15 minutes a night consistently, and more once in awhile, I'd set the ceiling on this team closer to 45-50 wins. There are some pretty bad teams the Cavs will be playing regularly, and then four dangerous ones (CHI, IND, MIA, BRK). The ability to get quality wins is the difference between doing just okay and pulling away from the pack. Last night was ugly, but it was a quality win.

He's obviously angling for re-election and perhaps higher office, but as cynical as I am, that only counts against him if he's truly insincere. He made some pretty severe cuts to local funding of schools, make the income tax less progressive and pushed SB5, which count against him in my book (some of those cuts were inevitable, though), but after backpedaling...he's kept backpedaling. At what point does it become real? Show me the results, I guess. Medicaid expansion is the first big point where I given him credit, but it's also a pretty easy win for him. Business and healthcare interests were solidly behind it. Who did he really bother? The Tea Party grumbled at him. So what? They won't sabotage his election. Writing bonds, rather than leasing the turnpike - okay, better than proposed originally. Pointing out the massive, massive, hypocrisy in the hyper-religious right's apathy towards the poor? Brownie points for saying the right things, not much else. Much of this is expected - Kasich doesn't stick to the script. It's a start, though. What I haven't seen are significant results in his jobs development platform as opposed to Lee Fisher's. Ohio is mostly treading water. But it's hard to know how much of that is really determined by what he does, or what anyone in the statehouse does. He signed the arguably unconstitutional heartbeat bill, but that's in concert with the compassionate conservative image he's chosen to project, so, politically, it makes sense to keep that sector of his base very happy. Even so, if he wants to show he's really against a war on the poor, he'll need to do more. He needs to piss off the extreme part of the Tea Party and not care. He has to be pragmatic and principled, not just one or the other depending on the issue. I'm not yet convinced he'll continue to chart a true middle course. At the end of the day, he's at the head of a column of representatives and senators who are probably the most arch-conservative in recent Ohio history. If Kasich can be moderate, so can Fitzgerald. To get the disaffected republicans like me, I think he needs to do something really, really, big. He needs to actually stick out his neck and show that he's serious when he says "let the chips fall where they may."
  10. I know some Chinese people who have been successful in getting sponsored. But not many. And my sector, law, is not a market where anyone is eager to eat additional costs right now. I would suspect the situation is not bad for engineers and doctors - I know the local immigration lawyers do a good business doing H1Bs for the hospitals.
  11. It's a federal law problem more than a local problem. Jackson isn't helpful, but I don't think he's an obstacle. If there was a real challenger to Jackson, he could exploit those comments.

It's right next to the market, so I assume its relatively safe? I'm trying to decide between Ohio City (Merrell) and downtown (Hanna or Rosetta). It's safe. But, you'll have to deal with the noise from Town Hall right next door, which I've heard gets fairly bad at times, so for me, Merrell is now the best choice in that area. I would avoid Metzner since you'd be actually adjacent to TH. Merrell is still perilously near but at least you have the street between you.
  13. Well, I was very wrong about the Tribe's chances - they ignored the odds and absolutely crushed the opposition, took advantage of every opportunity, and I'm still surprised as can be. But great stuff to watch. Will enjoy watching the game Wednesday regardless of outcome - just getting to the next series would be a huge victory, IMHO.

Hi. It's nice, I lived in the Metzner and have seen some of the apartments in Merrell. Pretty good if you can get parking as well.
  15. To me, this was the most disappointing part of the whole proposed conversion. IIRC (and I could be wrong here ... it's been a while!), it proposed demolishing several buildings at the northeast corner of West 28th and Detroit for expanded traffic flow off of the Shoreway. The particular property at the corner, Linda's Superette, has been considered by many to be a nuisance property, which I think reduced people's anxiety about demo. That said, this is basically removing traffic from West 25th, which would support future speculative development where two large surface lots currently sit, and increase traffic at an intersection directly adjacent to an extremely active nightclub and several high-density residential buildings. For public housing residents down the hill, this also seems problematic as the Shoreway's swoop to the northeast and the higher-density tower being adjacent to West 28th makes West 28th a more logical pedestrian corridor than the West 25th side. And all of this happening right at a time when Hingetown storefronts, arts spaces and residential rehab are poised to make this a much more pedestrian-oriented part of Ohio City. It just seems really perplexing to me ... Again, if I've recalled all the details correctly :) Just noting that the reason some believe Linda's is a nuisance is likely because people from the Lakeview projects gather outside, park haphazardly on the street, cross against the light, and generally loiter - and none of this should be surprising, because it is literally the only walkable mini-grocery anywhere near the projects and can only be reached by walking along a street that barely has sidewalks. Lakeview is horribly located and cut off from everything. So, this is a consequence of terrible planning and people just having nowhere else to go.
  16. He wasn't relatively effective. He was highly ineffective. He looked worse, somehow - he ran straight into defensive lineman, hesitated and didn't pursue gaps, and gave up on plays early. It was like he made the wrong choice in basically every situation, he only got away with it a few times because he is tremendously strong. 3.5 per carry is weak stuff for a guy with those tools. Can't blame it all on Cousins/Greco.
  17. Richardson was kind of disappointing, but it's still hard to believe that his ceiling isn't higher than he's performed. He will be better - I don't think he's a future great or anything, though. Actually, I like the trade, except who it's with. Indianapolis is very likely to end over .500 - they have a weak division and a favorable schedule. Face it, the Browns need a franchise QB - nothing else matters until we get that. Weeden assuredly is not it - he's improved somewhat, but he just doesn't have "it". They're going all-out for it now. They won't be overbid again. In that sense, I understand/approve of the trade. But what a slap in the face to the fans and the season ticket holders. It had better pay off in next year's draft or the team will, at long last, be at risk of truly losing its fans. And that's a real risk. There's no guarantee that Bridgewater or whoever we want will be available if Jacksonville goes 1-15 and refuses to move.
  18. It's not just a garage. I'll have you know there is also a gift shop. So there! /s I went in the casino to get a burger today, only second time I've been in there. It seemed to be doing quite well, especially the table games. Big lines at total rewards. The area that was not doing well were the higher-end slots. Abandoned, except for a few really fancy ones. So, if there's a revenue issue, it seems like it's on a per-customer basis, because it was fairly packed.
  19. Or Case doesn't have time to worry about Intesa's other components. They need more housing ASAP.
  20. Perhaps they're concerned about the larger long-term investment necessary to fund a rail expansion? RTA isn't exactly flush with cash, are they? Don't get me wrong, I would prefer rail/streetcar/subway to BRT any day, but I know that was the reason that the HealthLine became BRT - money.
  21. It's the Braves. The Indians will be lucky to win just one tonight. They aren't making the playoffs unless Detroit or Oakland just self-destruct or we somehow finally figure out how to beat Detroit. Not out of the question, but unlikely. But even if this is the last week the Indians are 'in it', I think they deserve some serious credit for spending money and being competitive into early September. A couple gambles paid off (Kazmir, Raburn), some have been so-so (Swisher), and some bombed (Myers), but at least they tried.
  22. Pretty bad news, especially considering this was a national that had focused a lot of its Ohio employees in Cleveland. A lot of those people are going to move.
  23. Nah, they had junior employees and no OSHA, so they just carried everything for the bosses, or hoisted it through the window with a pulley or something. Remember, if there's no law saying otherwise, brute human labor can solve almost any problem.
  24. Here: http://bls.gov/news.release/metro.t03.htm Those are the numbers cited by the article. They appear to be right. The PD is not scaremongering, unless the BLS is.
