  1. Case scored 5 stars on everything except 4.5 on LGBT housing, so they may as well be #1.
  2. I don't know what the Akron Beacon-Journal's financial position is, but they could easily make a play for Cleveland and strike a surprise blow for regionalism at the same time, or just print two different editions. I'm one of those annoying young people who doesn't get the paper, but all my relatives do, and they are PISSED at the PD...and even I would subscribe to an upstart for awhile just to poke them in the eye. I mean, I almost think when media markets are this badly disrupted, it's worth a venture investment despite the massive risk, almost just for the novelty of being the guys who 'brought back' the newspaper. It's never going to be the thick bundle of paper it was, but eliminating daily delivery just seems stupid to me from a business perspective.

Who's running against him? I live in Cimperman's ward, but I'll promote (almost) anyone against a three-time drunk driver.
  4. I think the proposed pedestrian bridge is a far better solution, I understand it's difficult because of the need for permanent clearance for the ships...but certainly less difficult than a tram.
  5. If there was a proposal to build something new, I might support demolition, but there isn't, and an out-of-state parking operator hardly deserves the benefit of the doubt. But, again, the fundamental problem is that there is no redevelopment proposal other than a parking lot - despite it sitting across from East 4th. I'd like to hear from the parties who are trying to buy it from L&R what they propose doing with it.
  6. Sorry, but I think this is ridiculous. No need, little benefit, and arguably an unattractive landmark regardless of how well designed and implemented it is. Can't we just have a water taxi between the new marina at Voinovich Park and Edgewater, and one in the river after the new Casino is built? Plus, we have the Waterfront Line...I mean, I would actually oppose this even if it was built with entirely private funds. It adds nothing and I think it's just a bizarre thing to put in a flat, lakeside city. I've seen escalators in Hong Kong and cable cars in the Rockies, and they made sense because of the terrain, and added a certain charm as well. This might be amusing, but it doesn't make sense.

...on the bright side, Cincy is only 45 minutes away Yeah, but the hours I'd be working are fairly brutal and I really don't want a commute more than 20 minutes. I could visit Cinci for fun, but not much else. The prevailing opinion on this is that South Park (wedged between the UD area and Oakwood) is probably your best bet. Next best might be Walnut Hills neighborhood. That's where I would go. I have read much anecdotal ranting on boards about how psychotic and unfair most Oregon district landlords are. I'd avoid renting there. Ugh, that's disappointing. I have been spoiled with a great landlord in Cleveland, too. Taking a quick look, South Park looks like a decent alternative, thanks. It's in the Kettering research park, so the bus routes stop about a half mile short of that area. Maybe if I'm feeling adventurous, but I'll probably just drive.

No idea if this is the 'right' thread, but I may be moving to Dayton for work and was wondering what people think a good place to live for a young, busy, professional is? Office is in one of the research parks in Kettering/Beaver Creek area. The Oregon District looks alright, possibly Oakwood as well? I'll rent first and then consider buying. Gotta be honest, coming from Cleveland I am expecting kind of a letdown.
  9. I had a good friend who lived in the Knitting Mills who said they constantly had problems with car break-ins and even direct armed robberies in and around their parking. The suspects were never seen driving away--always leaving on foot. Other residents of FKMB have told me the same thing. Thankfully, nothing has happened to me, but I'm basically never on the street after midnight and we have gated parking - have never seen anything happen to cars/things inside the gates. I think so - Lakeview Tower is the tall apartment building, Lakeview Terrace is the 2-3 blocks worth of low-rise old brick buildings. I don't know if they're the same administrative unit for CMHA or if they house different populations (like Riverview on W.25th is targeted towards older people), but they are right on top of each other. Lakeview Terrace (the tall building) is where we vote for this precinct. It's very densely populated and I've always felt it was a bizarre place to put CMHA properties, it's terribly isolated and not near anything other than the Spectrum of Supportive Services center that is next to our building on Detroit, but I don't know what the area was like when they were first built. You can check out the various CMHA properties here: http://www.cmha.net/tours/index.aspx, and see the relevant crime statistics here: http://www.cmha.net/aboutus/docs/CMHAPDAnnualReport2012.pdf
  10. This isn't a court, and it isn't on the local residents to prove beyond a reasonable doubt where someone lives when suggesting an area may need additional police resources. The occurrence of an incident, or multiple incidents, and circumstantial knowledge of a pattern of incidents in a particular area, is enough. Enough to discuss. I concur with gottaplan based on my experiences living one block from the area in question, discussing other incidents with other residents of this building, and having lived in Ohio City for the last 3 years. That's enough for a casual message board discussion - we're not going to produce video and statistical analyses. I provided facts as a beginning because it happened and I found it was obviously relevant. They are the beginning, but not the end, of the 'Crime and Safety Discussion'.
  11. The first guy had the US flag. The second guy had the Gadsden. They were shouting at both of them. This was not a political statement, it was "wow I'm apparently drunk and clearly stupid and gonna take my shirt off, let's look like awesome tough guys in front of our unaccountably large group of girls who are, apparently for lack of better options, forced to spend Thursday night with us."
  12. It's the 'Don't Tread On Me' flag with the coiled snake. The Gadsden Flag. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsden_flag
  13. And just so that this is on-topic, the crime that could be complained-of would be Disorderly Conduct (ORC 2917.11) or, depending on what I did *not* witness, Menacing (ORC 2903.22). I've contacted them and if they reported it, I will make a statement for them. I won't belatedly report it myself, but I should have done it immediately.
  14. That's the 4th or 5th similar type of thing I've heard of occurring at 28th & Detroit in the last year. It's gang/thugs/punks coming out of Lakeview Terrace. The City better get control of that area soon before someone really gets hurt. Probably from Lakeview, but hard to tell for sure. I don't think they had a car.
  15. Prove to me they were black. See above. They were. I'll swear on whatever text you wish.
  16. Okay. I live in the building at Detroit/W28 and saw the people who harassed them with my own eyes, while they were harassing them. It was a group of two African-American males and five AA females. What I saw was the guys doing the harassing and the girls just milling about uncertainly. They said, among other things, "f$&k you, bitches. Get the f$&k out! f$&k! Bitch!" and something like "f$&k your flag" several times. One of them, shirtless, jumped out into the street several times and flipped the bird at them several times, making 'come and get it' motions. This was while they were still pretty far up the street, so he wasn't right in their face. I didn't hear any racial epithets, but I only started paying attention after it was mostly over. It was mostly two guys, who were with about five or six girls who basically did nothing. One of the girls ran across the street like she was afraid at one point, and one of the guys ran over and brought her back. They then cleared off shortly before the two soldiers actually arrived. The two guys barely reacted, other than looking really, really, tired and dejected. For those of you who are monumentally offended by the mention of their race, get over it. Nobody even suggested through innuendo any conclusions to be drawn from the fact they were black. There are no conclusions. There are just really sad facts. Regardless of their race, they're cowardly punks and I regret not calling the police just for the sake of making a report because I wasn't sure what was happening until it was almost over. If someone links their facebook page for me, I'll let them know I witnessed it so I can add to any report they made. (done)
  17. ^ I guess that's true - I don't know the legal/technical definition of a riot. I was thinking more of the organized part, which seems worse than a spontaneous outburst of rage in terms of intent. Anyway, there will always be someone to perform for the mob - I don't think that can be stopped, short of basically imprisoning anyone who ever does it for a ridiculously long time. I don't care if there are a few fistfights at a huge public event. Adults are on generally worse behavior at many sporting events... What I'm more concerned about are the sort of events that happened in Philadelphia and other places where a mob of older teenagers basically targets a location and descends on it with the intent to do nothing but cause absolute chaos and destruction. Certainly Cleveland Heights has seen nothing like that, but there are echoes of that sort of thing in what happened last year - the mindless running down the street, shoving people, knocking things over, etc. THAT is what I'd punish doubly harshly, including the planning part.
  18. I'm all for pragmatic solutions, but cancellation seems like a pretty lame one, unless there's something really serious we don't know about. If it's just more of what happened before, I don't see how that can't be prevented - minor or not, you're subject to detention by force if you're a rioter. I imagine the paperwork is probably a nightmare for the city, though. Paid entrance fee seems like the best solution. Money, the default solution to everything... More security could work, but if the cost becomes prohibitive and it turns into an armed camp, I don't know. I'm not sure municipalities have any incentive to adopt a "come and get it" attitude towards troublemakers, since they can hardly guarantee they'll a) arrest most/all of them and b) that they'll actually be imprisoned or otherwise dissuaded from making more trouble. As for arresting people for social media posts, it can be done currently, but the bar is very very high - the secret service arrested people for threatening the President on Twitter, but only after they had done so repeatedly, had a stern talking-to, and then done it again very directly. Most of those actually arrested were very mentally disturbed. For a municipality to arrest people based on content of speech - very challenging to enact a law that does that properly, I imagine. What qualifies? "I'm gonna break some shit at the #streetfair tomorrow!" "gonna be crazy tmrw" "I'm planning on making an offensive, unconsented-to physical contact with the persons of others tomorrow, between 4-6 PM, on or near Coventry Road"? I really want to see the tweets.
  19. At uptown, Mitchell's Ice Cream is fairly far along. ABC is less far along but build-out is definitely well underway. Just based on looking in the windows/doors.
  20. The parking lot is now fenced off and the view is blocked by black fabric from the road. No real work yet, just some of the concrete parking barriers removed and occasionally someone in a vest wandering around the area. This has slightly worsened the already tight parking situation for non-garage commuters at CWRU. The parking for Uptown itself seems adequate for now.
  21. I've seen makeshift memorials last years on other roads - isn't there still one on I-71 for Trooper Gross?
  22. This building's death warrant was signed long ago. Delaying further is pointless. Not sure the Casino got what it wanted - they had to build around it. I think the building owners were trying very hard to get a chunk of cash by forcing someone to buy the building. They failed, and they basically screwed everyone in trying to do so. What serious effort was ever made at restoration?
  23. ^ Oops, you're right. Farther north, not south.
  24. Club Envy is further south on 25th. I seem to recall they were going to demo it, but it's just been sitting there for months and months. I don't know what the building in the picture used to be.
