Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
1840 Euclid Ave is the Union Building, Cleveland State's future temporary home for NEOMED Apparently Johnnies deli is closed for good, he stopped paying his rent and got evicted. The barbershop and Cousins cigar are still there and doing well from what I heard. I'll try and snap a picture of the North Campus project tomorrow.

Don't listen to Clevelander17, at this point he is just trolling this thread because he was upset no one cares about his parking problems.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Two things, first what is the source of this statement about the demolition, and second, I would like to know how CSU expects to do anything to the facade when the Wolfe building is still under review for nomination by landmarks, and they explicitly stated they would not do anything until the issue was decided on. I too am very worried about another horrible facadomy like Cle Hts City Hall. I hope they didn't manage to buy Rascal house or Peabody's yet. Although those have no historical significance structure wise, I believe they are strong assets to the campus, plus anything is better than more mega-block development.

Have a Concern About Vacant and Abandoned Demolitions Statewide?
Definitely SLPA, Save Lower Prospect Avenue in Cleveland which was formed over the Columbia building fiasco and is now spreading out to many other issues, including opening a dialogue between residents and the city, particularly city council and the Landmarks Commission to stop senseless demolitions. I will PM you. EDIT: I will PM you when you empty your inbox.

Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
Slow down guys, you are giving me residential conversion overload! If even one of these happens I will be ecstatic. The Hanna building in Playhouse, and now a possible three buildings all around east 6th? If this went through there would be a huge change in this area. My only concern, were will the inevitable parking be?

Just so nobody gets too disapointed, the Stanley was not saved over the Columbia, no matter what Rock Ohio Caesar wants you to believe (they did pit the one against the other as a preservation issue "we thought the stanley was more significant, so we incorporated that"). In reality, they did not and still do not own the stanley block, and can't tear it down. They did own the Columbia, and had the power to overcome (or manipulate) city hall. There were two options, Columbia, or Columbia and Stanley. The only scenario where the columbia could have been saved was had landmarks stopped it, the Columbia was never sacrificed for the stanley.

Cleveland: Hotel Development
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A City Council committee has endorsed a $1 million loan for a hotel near the site of a new convention center and medical mart, but the owners' suggestion of building a connecting walkway met some resistance. Councilman Jeffrey Johnson opposes the walkway, saying it would ruin a scenic view of City Hall to the north. He said the view was part of the 1903 Group Plan for downtown public buildings. Some council members also have said they are worried that a bridge would jeopardize the auditorium's status as a historic building. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/cleveland_council_committee_ok.html Just wanted to let you all know that there will soon be a campaign to halt the Westin skywalk to preserve the vista of City Hall as described by Councilman Johnson in this article. More info to come. I know some of you here disapprove of Johnson, especially considering his "storied" past, but regardless of whatever his motivation may be for helping us on these preservation issues, I think it is honorable that some public official is responding to public outcry on these issues.

Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
Isn't the casino providing free parking at the North Garage or whatever they bought from the city and the new valet center? Who would pay to park here?

Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
And to think I clicked on this thread expecting to see an exciting new project. If they put a garage in here and remove the windows it will look like a bomb went off in there, just like the garage ClevelandOhio posted. The march of progress continues on.

Some pics of the Hanna annex project in the Landmarks Agenda for tomorrow. And check out all those landmark nominations, 18! Why? Cause Johnson's a boss, that's why. Oh, and only 8 of those will be next meeting, the remaining 10 are being postponed for next meeting. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/2012/02092012/index.php?pageNum_rsImage=0&totalRows_rsImage=293#nav

Isn't the whole point of Dunham that it is the oldest building in Cleveland that IS in its original location?

Im sure this thread will be locked soon, and all these posts deleted, but I just want to say one thing to Clevlander17 before that happens. You have a bad attitude, that defeatist attitude that is keeping CSU down. Amongst some of the most impressive campus developments in CSU's history, and amongst record breaking GPA enrollments for this college, it is students like you who give CSU a bad name. It seems like you have no faith in your own university, and when you graduate from this "drive through degree factory" as you call it, your potential employers will see that you have no confidence in the school that awarded you your degree, and pass you by for a student with some respect for his university. Maybe you wont send in a $5 check to the alumni association because of this parking issue, but my guess is you abandoned CSU before you stepped into your first class.

I just wanted to give everyone a little perspective on that article, as I saw the print version today. It was in the back of the Cauldron, in the opinions section, I don't think this is a regular writer. Just makes it a tad better. Oh, and believe me, that RTA station is not dangerous to anyone. There are no blind spots, the buses wont hit you. I bet its 10 times safer than crossing Chester Ave. And seriously, how hard is it to swipe your Viking card into a machine, you are just making excuses. Cleveland State has a commuter presence, and it always will, and should. But if CSU wants to be a competitive first rate institution then it needs to build a campus community. New apartments and shops will always trump surface lots, anyone who disagrees should go to suburbanohio.com

I park at the south garage now, the walk isn't that bad, and if you dont want to walk, the E line trolley goes through the RTA transit center and will drop you off in front of CSU. I am ashamed to attend the same school as this moron. People like him and the other entitled of my generation wont make it very far in the workplace.

This might be the only time those comments after the article are good. Maybe because its the Sun and the regular posters are too busy whining about Dimora over in some other article. Oh and nice article btw, everything seems perfectly accurate.

KJP, aren't there only 10 members? The chair only votes in a tie too, no way 7-4.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Right off the bat the Wolfe Music was postponed at landmarks today, Stephanie McHenry, VP of Business affairs and Finance at CSU, asked for 30 days to develop plans of saving the Wolfe facade and its incorporation into the new structure as a counter to landmarking. So even if the Wolfe is demolished, all the trouble we went through at least got the facade saved, and I say thats something. Before they might have just said screw it and tore it down with no salvage.

I heard Sweeny, the council pres and councilman of the ward choose her, thats just hearsay though. Oh and regarding the John Marshall Grad, I understand the school may have been in bad shape, thats why there was a complete renovation option, regardless of the vote, their would have been improvements. (Well they threatened it might fall through if anything less than new construction was allowed, I dont know how valid those threats were.) I think the biggest problem here is the complete disregard for public opinion, I mean the room was just full of energy, it was like the Columbia again, so many people came out to protest demolition, Satinder Puri brought 1200 signatures to the commission members, and gave a very impassioned speech, and quite honestly, the opposing side just sounded foolish. Their arguments included "What happens when all the kids who go to brand new grade schools have to go to this old high school, how will they deal with that", and "This neighborhood is really only residential, a landmark of John Marshall's size and stature is too much", and my favorite and most nonsensical "what about the children?" Yeah, and what is it about the children? How will preserving this building negatively impact them? Yet I am absolutely positive that after we all left they bullied some small business owner on the size and design of the sign for the business he is putting in a historic structure he renovated. Its all bullshit.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
John Marshall 5-4 approved for demolition. Phyllis Cleveland filling in for a member for the meeting "I dont really know a lot about preservation or architecture, but I do like new buildings. I vote demolition" and this cracked me up"If I could, I would put a ferris wheel in the middle of east 55th, but we cant have what we wish, only what is cost efficient" (referring to John Marshall renovation as maybe being best in a no money scenario). So I am pretty convinced the landmarks commission is broken. Between someone like Cleveland being allowed to substitute for a memeber and vote, complete disregard of public opinion, and all the council members on the commission having a tradition of voting in line with the ward councilpersons wishes, a new system needs to be in place.

ClevelandOhio, you should update your map. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=214307218223262897576.0004aa4758e5355e6fba8&msa=0&ll=41.499964,-81.693778&spn=0.008196,0.01929 EDIT: I dont know how to post the URL, when I copy and pasted, this popped up. Any way look on page 5 for it.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
While I usually would abhor the idea of putting new facades on historic structures (as happened to many buildings downtown and now many of them are being taken off), since this building has lost its facade already, this might just be the change the building needs. I would love to see someone do a mockup of that to see how it would look.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
Their PR people say "visit the city", but their parking plans say "Never go outside." If the casino people seem to want to get people to explore the city so much, wouldn't a good start be to get them from the garage onto the street instead of gerbil tubes?

Wolfe Music discussion tabled until January 12th. Other three buildings, Fenn, Howe, and Stager-Beckwith all are now landmarks.
