Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
I know you guys always say not to read those comments, but who are these people? How do they have the time in the day to constantly make all these negative comments on any city topic? Its never anything constructive being discussed, just "wah wah Cleveland sucks". Cleveland.com seems to be nothing more than a bunch of depressed, defeatist losers with no optimism at all for Cleveland's future.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
Why cant they build the parking garage in the parking lot to the east of the gateway garage between east 4th, Prospect, and Huron? Hell, just close all of east 4th so that the new garage could connect to the exisiting one. There would be infill, more parking for the Gund and not much farther than the proposed area, just one block. I know why they wont, the people developing this project feel that we cannot let casino goers on the dirty, crime filled streets of Cleveland lest they be robbed by those destitute surface walkers. People should be shuttled around in the sky, and spit on those in the street from their lofty skyways. All sarcasm aside, I can kind of see the benefit of having indoor passages during those winter months, i use them at CSU when its raining or freezing. But we cant have it both ways, are we integrating it into the urban fabric, or is it going to be a citadel with the most access from a parking garage and skyways? An edit after Hts121 posted that article. If they demo the Stanley and Columbia, and then back out of the Casino leaving an empty lot behind, oh I can't even fathom it.

I called the Landmarks Commission, the person I spoke to said tomorrow would be a preliminary review of the Casino's proposal to build the garage on that spot. Is anyone thinking of attending the meeting? The meetings are public and he said if you want to speak you should alert the chairman ahead of time and they will address you at the meeting. The person I spoke with told me that the actual decision to demolish the building will not occur tomorrow. Guys, if we want to save this, we need to start now. I'm serious, who wants to actually get something going here?

How easy is it to demolish an historical landmark, such as the Columbia building? Right now it appears that the Stanley block is staying because a.) there was a lot of hubub about it, and b.) they don't technically own the entire building, what is it, majority shares in an investment group that owns around half the building, with the Maloof's owning the other half? When I first started worrying about the stanley, I think we all figured the Columbia's landmark status would save it, but that dosen't seem to be Rock Gaming's view. They just assume that it would be easy to raze it. We need to start making a ruckus about the whole block, or else we will lose this part of Cleveland. They think they will just be able to appease us by leaving the Stanley block, but they don't get it, we want it all.

It wasn't displaying when I saw it, but the way the screen looked, I could tell that the quality of the screen would be very poor. Still, I think I like the sign.

Sorry, born and raised in sweet ole suburbia, whether I like it or not. Driving is ingrained in me, where I live there are no sidewalks. But I understand, one day I will live in the city, sans car.

I heard you guys like signage. there is some kind of crazy sign going up in front of the new student center. At the base is a wide circle that looks like its made of pipes radiating out in a circle, then a tall white pole in the center, with three electronic signs staggered vertically. At the very top are the very small letters CSU, made of the same material as the rest. Sorry no picture, take a drive and see it, its quite big.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
My email to Keiser, Petit, and Cimperman. Hello Gentlemen, My name is (anon), I was born and raised here in Northeast Ohio, and I currently attend Cleveland State University. Recently it has come to my attention that the Stanley block, as well as its surrounding buildings, are in immediate danger of being razed for parking. I love Cleveland, I love the city of Cleveland, and I love its history and its buildings. Soon I plan on moving from (Eastside suburb) to Cleveland while I finish my bachelors degree. I even plan on pursing my master’s degree here in Cleveland. Yet to see one of Cleveland’s oldest buildings be razed for more parking, which is quite plentiful already, tears at my heart; it makes me physically ill. The loss of one of the oldest buildings in our city, and one with such great architectural significance, is a loss that this city cannot afford to endure. I am positive that once the casino is built, and the mad dash for parking is over, these buildings will be renovated and put to good use. These buildings are a vital part of the urban fabric, and nothing tears at the urban fabric like a parking lot. We need to preserve these old buildings for ourselves and our progeny; you can never replace theses structures once they are gone. When I think of the possibility that our city would allow the unnecessary demolition of our built heritage, I begin to question whether Cleveland is the kind of city I want to live in, the kind I want to cultivate my career in and raise my family. Is this the path Cleveland will take? I thank you for your time, (anon) Short and to the point, I like the slight guilt trip, I dont think they like the idea of losing college graduates too much. And hey, its true. The only time I ever think "wow I hate Cleveland" is when I hear about another building torn down or see old pictures of what once was. Also, I see some here ready to rally, I am game to join in! Lets organize something.

I know they are auctioning off equipment inside Viking Hall. My guess is they are emptying it out now.

Why not contact the President's office. Or better yet, contact the Maxine Goodman Levine College of Urban Affairs and try to team up with them to save the building.
