Columbus: Short North Developments and News
ck replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionHe had a job to do when he was in Columbus over the summer so he didn't get to go out much. He's also grown up in Seattle and it's a lot denser out here, so it's a bit shocking when you go to a flat suburban style part of the country. The cool thing is that when we were driving up high street he said this is like Capitol Hill but times 10! And if you don't know, Capitol Hill in Seattle is the hip area and is anchored by a street called Broadway (infamous for the references in songs from Sir Mix-a-lot and Macklemore). He was pretty floored by High street and how long of a stretch of night life it had. I've always thought High street was pretty rare, but it was cool to hear from someone who didn't know Columbus and wasn't as biased as I am.

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
ck replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionWas back in Columbus last week for a wedding. My 18 y/o little bro was there too and had been in town this summer but staying way out east. He said Columbus was a 'dinky' town and had a bunch of ugly strip malls. I couldn't disagree, based on suburbia. Then I drove him around Franklinton and the Short on Friday night and he was like, 'whoa, I never got to see this.'

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
The only difference with the jobs is Amazon gets press and others don't. Sensational stories about workers gets clicked because everyone uses their services. You'll never hear about a smaller company that likely treats people the same or often worse.

Columbus: Downtown: Hilton Columbus Downtown Tower II
A lot of unused roof space on that lower roof. Would be cool to see it utilized.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
The amount of people walking around a central business district at night has very little to do with the area's population and/or growth. As is the case in a lot of America, Columbus is still car first and therefore you don't see throngs of people commuting via public transit or long walks through downtown.

It's pretty cool it was able to do that - i'm pretty cynical, so don't mind me :) It definitely was done well

Late to the game on the sunny episodes, but... I won't say it's a GOAT segment. I also have watched every episode and most of them multiple times. But ya, although I thought the last episode was nice and the last scene was emotionally appealing, it felt like a stretch and a bit over the top for a show that usually walks the line and rarely makes a definitive statement - simply explores both sides of many arguments. They got flashy and they used art in their story in a way they haven't before. It's done over and over in other settings, but they decided to bring it into a show that most people don't watch for that. It did catch you a bit off guard, and in that respect was possibly more striking than going into something expecting it. I was conflicted by it though, honestly. It seemed like they came up with an excuse for doing it instead of doing it as a natural progression. It was striking and it was done about as tastefully as that show can do something. I won't fault them for stepping outside the lines, but jumping the shark, I agree with Ram, it applies here. The first and last shows felt off to me this season. The rest of the season was at the top of their game. And again, i really don't know how to feel about it, so i'm not criticizing. But can you remember any other episode where they actually do something legitimately well?? The last time I remember them all dancing, they cut to reality and they were all drunk and embarrassing themselves during the class reunion. Now all the sudden mac is a master of expressing emotion through dance? Just a little odd.

ck replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction^is that the right rendering for that location? I think the rendering you're showing was the one on State St, and the pic you're showing is Oak?

Columbus: Downtown: Merchant Building
I'll readily admit my opinion can be non-standard - but I like it. I like the revised tower concept as well, as I think Columbus needs some new building 30+ stories. But this looks awesome to me:

Seattle: Developments and News
Here's a really cool website that tracks development in Seattle: https://www.seattleinprogress.com/ It is truly nuts. I think that it will cool off now that Amazon won't grow only in Seattle though. As far as the glass towers, I guess it's not to everyone's taste, and it certainly isn't old NYC, but it's still interesting to me. Glass reflects the conditions outside to an extent, so the colors aren't static. And at night, it lights up very nicely.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Is there a formula for perceived density? The numbers we have show Cbus with the greatest density - It doesn't really matter if it's because there's a big hill or a body of water. Overall, that is the average density for the city's boundaries. Perceived density seems like it may be aiming at the most common density level an average person in a city experiences/lives in. E.g. The median density a person in x city lives in. I may be way off, but if not, it seems like this would be a fairly straightforward number to calculate - albeit, I have no idea where these stats are. Perceived density, I suppose, may also take into consideration things like temporary populations (students, workers in central business districts, tourists), and that would certainly be harder to calculate but is probably important. I know my neighborhood has cruise lines dock a couple blocks away every weekend - that significantly adds to the number of people walking around but likely wouldn't be calculated in traditional numbers.

Interesting that in those numbers Columbus has the highest population density and smallest land area.

Cashierless Stores / Amazon "Just Walk Out" Technology
The cloud is all about efficiency. This includes environmental, cost, and i/o gains. In no way is the cloud solely about profits, although it is very profitable at this stage for just about everyone (customer and provider) due to the amount of efficiency actually being realized. Most companies running their own servers are wasting most of the compute capacity a majority of the time, not using optimized cooling solutions, likely drawing power from regular sources, and paying to maintain that hardware. The cloud is brilliant regarding nearly all aspects of operations. There aren't many new solutions that come out where the customer gets better service, cheaper bills, and the company providing it still makes good margins. It's a radical shift from the way things were being done. And I love self-checkout lanes. Never had an issue. Again, you take one person and allow them to handle 6 checkout lanes at once - that's a big gain in efficiency not only for the consumer (who has to wait less) but also the business. And I can avoid the judgement of the cashier when I'm buying that big box of captain crunch! :) Anyway, overall just an opinion. I do think a lot of worry is about misunderstanding or incomplete facts. But, obviously not all - there's definitely a big issue about human labor that needs to be addressed.

Cashierless Stores / Amazon "Just Walk Out" Technology
At the risk of starting a huge debate, your ire appears to be with online shopping and automation of routine processes. Amazon is certainly the face of that, but I think this probably would happen no matter what and adapting is a better strategy. Life is change, we will need to figure out how society should work when we get more efficient and don't need people moving an item across a bar scanner and placing it in a bag. Since we existed we have looked for ways to make our lives easier and more convenient - this trend is not likely to stop now. Fighting it may delay it, but we will need to accept and address it at some point. If that means making a law requiring cashiers (e.g. Oregon requires a person gets paid to pump gas) then so be it. I think we need to get a bit more creative though.

Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
I lived next to the Goody Boy in 2001, Cleveland Ave and Morse in 2000, Sawmill road for a time, Hamilton Rd area, North high street just past Lane, Gahanna, and Grandview. In 2001 I think things were worse, on that block maybe, and I did get stuck up (allegedly by a gun, but pretty sure it was the guy's hand) on High Street right in front of my apartment. Also had the police helicopter shine it's spotlight on my apartment for ~5m after I saw cops chasing someone through the parking lot (I was just standing on the balcony watching). A number of interesting characters constantly hung around. The music shop across the street got robbed and 2 undercover cops chased the guy through the alley nearby and had a gunfight. It probably had the most excitement out of any of the places I lived - in any city I've lived. I will say, even after the stuff that happened around Goody Boy, I never felt scared to be out and about.
