Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Re: The new brewery for Legacy. I am pretty sure that it got scrapped. The former Joseph-Beth space was filled w/ signage about it coming soon, back in the early summer. The signage has recently disappeared and the space is dead empty. Also - Myxx at Cedar-Fairmount shutdown. I hope the next tenant can utilize the gigantic space better than a gigantic dancefloor. Also - World of Beer signage is up in downtown Lakewood, across from Melt and next door to Eddie & Eddie's. That entire block is full of new retail/food/bar and imo is the hottest new area in NE Ohio right now as there is also a Panera, Menchie's, Five Guys, Quaker Steak, Deagan's, Roots Cafe, Chipotle, Jimmy John's, Buyback$, Exchange, Aladdin's, Robek's, Pacer's, Rozi's and it's new patio, and like 50 other places that already existed or are very recent - so many I can't keep up w/ it. Talk about urban developments - downtown Lakewood is on fire! Grocery and Pharmacy: Marc's and Drug Mart, check. Bank: check. Post office: check. New library: check, coffee shop: Caribou and Roots, check. Public transportation: Direct bus route, check. Book shop: ...needed to complete the neighborhood! Such a damn shame the spot where Trader Joe's/Gold's Gym was once thought to be going is now becoming a gigantic Get Go gas station (Detroit/Bunts). Because then, I'd move back to Lakewood for the rest of my life!

This thread is so damn depressing. Beautiful things torn down. McDonald's built. I won't go to hell when I die, I'm already there.

Lyndhurst: Acacia Country Club
Also - I wonder how long until mayfield country club joins the ranks of "for sale land", after all, it straddles perfectly next to lv, Cleveland clinic (formerly trw) and acacia. If the area needs more retail, then beachwood mall or lv would need to build a parking garage to free up land and then expand. Or someone should consider fixing university center, as the only other swath to develop anywhere remotely close is chagrin highlands along green. I'd rather see existing retail expand or renovate than the latter.

Lyndhurst: Acacia Country Club
Schneider and lyndhurst should have developed lv like an urban village and not like a exurban swath of land wasted on ground parking and one story buildings. And the east suburbs should stop stealing retail from each other. All a joke IMO and sadly I'm stuck dead center in the middle of all these things.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I saw today in the news that Geis has been approved to begin working (prelim only) on the new office park SOUTH WEST of Burke Airport. Only problem I have understanding is what the hell that means. Looking at a map, there is no land available to develop southwest of Burke. There's the Muni lot south, and southwest is basically a rapid stop and E. 9th, the muni parking garage, and the coast guard parking lot. If they mean southwest of the landing strip, then that'd mean the only parking lot at Burke. and that also makes no sense. Would love to better understand this whole plan. edit: ok i just found the answer to my own question: http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/08/geis_cos_float_plan_for_lakefr.html

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
I am cool with Steelyard expanding with a phase 2. It's nice Cleveland finally has some decent national chains in the city proper. That however is not an excuse for First Interstate, the City, or its residents to never aspire for anything nicer than upper lower class retail shopping options in the city. Other equal sized metropolitan areas do wonders with similar shopping developments. So why are we celebrating a Burlington Coat Factory and a Taco Bell? This shopping center is owned by Mr. Luxury Legacy Village - why can't Mitchy boy invest some higher end shopping for the clientele at Steelyard for Clevelanders? Oh, right. It's a demographic thing - Clevelander's can't afford nice things. They have to shop at Wal-Mart, Deal$, and Aldi's. Only problem with the rather stale site directory at Steelyard is that it's right next to Tremont where many young professionals with disposable incomes live. And 5 minutes from downtown and Ohio City where many more reside. Where's a Heinen's? Whole Foods? Earth Fare? Constantino's? SOME, ANY decent grocery store besides a Wal-Mart and Aldi's? Oh wait, nice grocery stores in the city - that only happens everywhere except Cleveland... Sorry for being a complainer, but it irritates the hell out of me that no efforts have been made to attract decent retail. Oh, I'm sorry: Guthrie's is the shit.

Those aren't weeds, that's intentional. I walked past it today and realized it's some sort of bamboo type of stuff.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
Adjacent to Cedar Center is University Center. I am sure we all know of it as "2 Story Target". There is a Pier One Imports at the ground level. Rumor has it, they are re-locating to Legacy Village. Jo-anne's at University Center just closed and they opened a new store to replace it over at Golden Gate. Long story short, I am getting more and more concerned about that shopping center and hope that some sort of renewed interest will be coming with the Oakwood and Cedar Center developments in the area. I also should point out that if Pier is moving to Legacy, then Schneider has siphoned yet another retailer from one suburb to another neighboring one.

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
I'd love to see Severance sell off some of it's parking lots and space to the developers of the surrounding condo's and townhouse projects. There's 3 of them surrounding Severance and all 3 are very well done.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
China Gate is also going in, the economic dev. department missed adding it to the sign. There is a very long building going up in the back that will house most of the stuff with the pet store being the anchor. The Sbux will be in the middle building. Apparently Citizens Bank may take over old Sbux space.

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
Remember, money is the root of all evil and Mitchell is dancing in cash because now he has another Wal-Mart in his pants. He'd make for a great politician. Ya know the whole "liar" stereotype fits him perfectly. I'm still hoping the other parcel is going to be all the new retailers looking to locate in the area. Ya know, the promise he made, along with all the new jobs created.. err, I mean siphoned.. but we all know a Sam's Club would look so much more sexy.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Great news!!! Another new Pho restaurant is coming soon on the east side - this time at Legacy Village.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
There's actually a third building under construction also, in between the two you mentioned!! All 3 are to the sidewalk, but who knows what side is entrance, who knows what's going inside them, and who know's what's the site plan.

Does anyone know where the name WAVERLY comes from? There is a school one block over called Waverly School. And now this is called Waverly Station. I'd be interested to know the history, as it seems something or someone named Waverly once graced the 58th-Bridge vicinity.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Great to hear, but the end of the story really lays it down on how this company is limited in their operations: they have only existed for 1 year and have not yet built anything, anywhere yet, even though they "plan to" build in multiple second tier cities. Cleveland.com has made it their headline story. Generalized proposals shouldn't be headline news. I work in MidTown and have seen one too many deals fall through, and most have been more finalized than this. Nonetheless, it's great to hear of the possibility of a new business moving in. "The year-old company, run by executives with experience in the data-center business, aims to own and run facilities in secondary, Midwestern cities. Kowal said Superior Technology Partners is focused on markets that need more data centers, as companies look to outsource server storage, credit-card processing and other services. The company has yet to open a data center but is pursuing several opportunities, including new construction, acquisitions of existing buildings and joint ventures. The timeline for the Cleveland project is unclear."

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
I have reached out as an upset, well, furious taxpaying citizen who wants an explanation of why Martin Sweeney selected Phyllis Cleveland to the board for this vote. I have made some calls to the Planning Commission but got the assistant to the assistant of Martin Sweeney's voicemail. It's a start - we deserve an answer and good reasoning. It's not fair and frankly it's wrong. I suggest we all step up, this is where I draw the line on what I sit back and watch happen to our beautiful architecture. This makes me sick. This could have slipped away but Ms. Cleveland opened her mouth and said what she said, which is an insult to those who trust that those decision makers are educated and neutral to the matter at hand.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Can't find a thread for it, but what's being built on e 9th across the street from rock hall: it's gOvt/military land if I'm not mistaken. The bldg is fairly big yet not seeing a discussion on it.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
There's bob Evans everywhere, I was at a party at golden Gate last night and low and behold another bob Evans lives there. I was mad that they're building one here but then I realized every city has one and we all get to suck equally.

Question re South Euclid and Euclid
Oh my god. I can't believe people are telling Tbideon about city's they know nothing about. I LIVE in South Euclid and am ready to tell you the TRUTH. This forum spews out a lot of "opinions" as "facts", which is such a shame. Forgive me for any typo's, I'm going to give as much info. in as little time as possible. Here goes... I own a 2-family home in Lakewood that I originally bought to live in the upper half and rent the downstairs, all the while getting to own a house in a really cool inner ring suburb that is safe. I lived in Lakewood one year before I found an amazing house in South Euclid. I bought it before the financial crisis at a still great price because it was a "short sale", which is almost always a good deal if you do it right. So, I have lived in South Euclid for 4 years and love it.. MORE than Lakewood. I won't say I love SE more than Lakewood, but I love the EASTSIDE as a whole so much more. When you combine the amenities of Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, University Heights, South euclid, and Little Italy, you have a hell of an area to spend your life. Schools: I currently have no children but if I did, I would send them to private schools, no matter where I lived. But, I have friends that went to Brush and it is considered a fairly decent school district, which it shares with Lyndhurst. South Euclid's housing stock is majority small homes built post-WWII. They have an urban feeling due to the street after street of house after house, similar to what you'd find in Euclid or Parma. Those homes range from under 100k to 130k. There are almost no doubles or apartment complexes in the city, save for just a handful in odd ended areas. South Euclid has a number of areas that do not fit the small bungalow style - mostly the eastern side of the city. The entire area around Notre Dame is full of a variety of housing. I live on South Belvoir, and it is full of contemporary houses as well as several arts and crafts style mansions with sprawling yards. Houses on Belvoir, between Mayfield and Cedar range from 100k-600k. The easternmost part of SE has large variety of homes, with the nicest ones being along the perimeter of Mayfield Country Club, going for as much as 1million (at least that's what one house is being offered at), while streets nearby are 150k-ish. The area near the Euclid Creek Reservation has a number of newer homes that resemble those found in Richmond Heights, especially off of Anderson Road. There have been several new developments, one at Anderson and Green (they chopped down nice woods for these), as well as a subdivision behind Alesci's off Mayfield, and a small cul-de-sac development off of Green called Novicky Court. Being new housing, they will be priced above 200k. I don't ever see boarded up houses, never once in my life in SE. I have seen a lot of houses for sale however in the area between Cedar and Mayfield near Warrensville Center. I assume this may change with SE's green initiatives in this part of the city, both the urban gardens and the eco-housing guidelines. Their proximity to Oakwood may change their values too. Crime: I have never experienced or witnessed any crime in SE. The worst thing that has happened was the Bexley Park fire which was done by teens who were caught. I read the crime blotter regularly and really feel SE is a very safe suburb. When a crime or traffic accident does occur, be prepared for CH and UH cops to assist and help each other, I have seen that happen 2 times with accidents near Cedar-Warrensville. A UH cop once told me the 3 cities work together when there is a problem in that area because the 3 cities intersect near Cedar Center North. Access: Very close to I-271 (<10 minutes), direct route to University Circle in 10 minutes. Supermarkets: Giant Eagle on Mayfield, Giant Eagle Legacy Village, Heinen's Green Road, Aldi's Mayfield, Whole Foods Cedar Center, Dave's Severance, and Zagara's on Lee. College's: Notre Dame (<2 minutes), John Carroll (<5 minutes), Case 10 minutes, CIA 10 minutes, Ursuline 10 minutes. Department Stores: Beachwood Mall (<10 minutes), Legacy Village (<10 minutes), Richmond Mall (<10 minutes), Target + Macy's Cedar Center (5 minutes), Severance Circle (5 minutes). Movie theater's: Cedar Lee (10 minutes), Severance (5 minutes), Richmond (10 minutes), Eastgate Phoenix (10-15 minutes). Post office: GREEN ROAD near Mayfield. Coffee Shops: Starbucks @ Cedar/Warrensville, Phoenix @ Mayfield/Green, Starbucks @ Mayfield/Lee, Starbucks @ Legacy Village, Espresso bar at Whole Foods, Phoenix on Lee, and Arabica at Fairmount Circle. Many of these amenities are directly within SE's borders. Other stuff is so close it doesn't even matter. I often think of South Euclid as being right in the middle and that is why Heights Observer ranked SE the #2 suburb in NE Ohio. Traffic: Heavy on Cedar and Mayfield during evening rush hour but still 2 lanes in each direction and lights are engineered to keep cars moving. Parks: Bexley, Euclid Creek, the future Oakwood, SELREC. Libraries: SE-Lyndhurst on Mayfield, University branch on Cedar near Cedar Center, CH branch on Lee, Beachwood library on Richmond, Coventry Library. Churches: plenty of those and too many to name. Tennis courts: Cain Park, SELREC, Purvis Park on Cedar Road. Rec Centers: YMCA South Euclid-Lyndhurst; Urban Active at Legacy Village, JCC on Richmond, Bally's at Severance. Demographics: Wide variety of white, black, and Hispanic, as well as a large student population from Notre Dame and John Carroll. Large number of Jewish residents as well as Italian, and Russian. Overall SE is a middle class inner ring suburb and is not known for wealth or extravagance. It's also not known as a slum or a bad place to live. The sidewalks are plowed by the city. I can't say that was a perk of living ANYWHERE else in my life. The streets are plowed, the leafs are picked up, recycling is offered, and the streets are clean. Tbideon, as for people I see walking around: I see joggers all the time - students mostly, but I also see a ton of people walking dogs. Keep in mind I live close to Notre Dame and John Carroll. But I still see people jogging on the streets where the post WWII houses are located. There is also a dog park which I see a lot of people at daily. They are normal middle class people who look like teachers to me more than anything. 99% of the city has paved sidewalks. There are no bike lanes except at Euclid Creek. There is little to no industrial development in SE. The majority of businesses are retail along Cedar and Mayfield. I have 3 friends who live in South Euclid, in various parts of the city - one who lives on Green just south of the Cleveland border; another who lives on Linell near Mayfield (Mr. Hero), and one who lives on Green near Mayfield. They all seem to be fine too. I think the biggest problem with SE is that it is racially diverse and very much integrated at the same level as CH and SH. I think anyone who can't handle diversity will have a big problem with South Euclid. It's sad, but it's reality that the color of skin dictates where people will and won't live. For me however, I have never felt more at ease knowing I am not in a community of one race. I hope this info. helps. I am willing to answer any other questions you may have. Please remember, I am a resident who CHOSE to live here. I am not talking about a city I know nothing about. You won't find me reviewing Fairview Park. :)
