  1. 200 agents involved raiding 10+ locations. Not just small quid pro quo if it involves this many agents. Who knows what will unravel from this.
  2. Bottom line is, he built a headquarters in 5 different spots all along I-271 which did absolutely nothing for Cleveland. And as for his amazing collection of artwork on display, it's too bad it's in a hardly unique office building in a hardly unique area that is very hard to find. If he truly cared for Cleveland, he'd do something more than criticize. The default line for most of us Urban Ohioer's: If only I was a billionaire..

    Apparently so..

But before we all criticize this front entrances poor placement on Cedar, why don't we admit that it's a whol heck of a lot better than a Giant Eagle in the back of a huge parking lot, with only 1 entrance.

It's been there from the start, but it's just not as popular as a door since most people are car dependent and the parking lot in front is very small, usually full. But it's there and always has been, and I use it when I ride there on my bike on Cedar.
  6. Tudor Arms Building is one of my 5 favorite pieces of architecture in Cleveland and if it was in any other bigger city, it'd still be in my top 5. Absolutely amazing work and glad to see it being used again. What's more important is that the Cleveland Clinic and UC spillover is finally happening. The blocks surrounding Tudor Arms have plenty of potential and if I was to choose 1 area in all of NE Ohio where things can and will change very quickly, it's this area, Stokes/Carnegie.

Whole Foods actually has 3 entrances: 1) From the 2nd level of the parking garage, you take the elevator or the steps down 2) From the back parking lot (main entrance) 3) From the corner of Cedar/Warrensville, the entrance has its own cash register and is right by the beer/wine department.
  8. OK, University Center (The Cage) is completely gone as of today (Friday, July 25th). They have begun work on the new building in front of Mather Hall (FINALLY!) - trees torn down, and old parking lot being dug up as of yesterday. CSU also added a large new sign to the parking garage overlooking the Innerbelt. Here are some pictures of the final pieces of University Center, plus a view of the Main Classroom update (which much to my surprise, I think looks awesome!), as well as views of Cleveland from Rhodes Tower at night: <img src="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/bizbizjohn/IMG_0656.jpg"> <img src="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/bizbizjohn/IMG_0658.jpg"> <img src="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/bizbizjohn/IMG_0661.jpg"> <img src="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/bizbizjohn/IMG_0655.jpg"> <img src="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/bizbizjohn/IMG_0669.jpg"> <img src="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/bizbizjohn/IMG_0670.jpg">

The South Euclid side will be a success, because it will be the big 4: residential, retail, office, and community/park space. My biggest gripe is how the other side turned out, other than Whole Foods. Whole Foods was built great - 2 entrances, a parking deck ABOVE the store, and right up to the sidewalk on Warrensville. However, that is the only good thing about that side of the street. The rest of the plaza sucks ass and was re-developed poorly. They should have torn it down and done more with it. The parking lots are still a waste of land/space. The building is 1 story, maybe 2 on some parts, but nothing was even done by Coral other than adding new landscaping and new exterior. I really hope Coral isn't to blame and it's U. Hts. who let it go that way. I believe S. Euclid is really pushing for their side to be very big, because it's their finally their chance to take a piece of the pie (all the other cities nearby already have a nice retail center).
  10. The CWRU nightlife is and has been happening a mile east, at Coventry. Uptown will obviously be the place to be once all is said and done.
  11. I think that the best thing about this for us Ubran Ohio'ers is that when it's all done being built, we can go hang out there and it'll not only be fun and good to know Cleveland is doing well, but we'll basically have all these new neighborhoods and districts to just hang out in that previously did not exist. This one sparks my interest equally as much as Flats East Bank. Pitts and Columbus have jumped the ship on us with these sort of new neighborhoods or re-development projects, but once all is said and done, Cleveland will come out the winner since so many are planned at once. I often go to Pittsburgh and say to myself how Cleveland needs something like the E. Carson Street re-development. Same with Short North's different new urban projects in Columbus. They both add density, street action, big name retail, people, and fun. It's in NE Ohio, but we gotta go to Crocker Park to get it. So, yes, this will be amazing in 5 years to enjoy this stuff in the WHD, FEB, Avenue District, UC, or also Upper Chester. Lots to look forward to, and that makes me happy!
  12. There is a lot of activity on the site and something is being done there. This is not another one of those parcels with junk laying around and land being cleared. They have been at it for a month or so, digging up grass, clearing patches, now they are doing something that looks like underground utility work maybe.
  13. Well, the problem with E. 55th and Shoreway is that there is no other retail there, nadda one. Ikea's are located not only along busy, visible highways, but also amidst other retail. Which is why I don't see anywhere on I-90 being viable.
  14. Yeah, I remember this. It's rather dissapointing that we never got an Ikea right there. I still drive out to Pittsburgh 3-4 times a year just for Ikea. And I usually stay for the weekend in Pittsburgh while I'm out there. Hotel, restaurants, downtown tourism, all for the sake of Ikea. Just as we turned down Casino's, we also turned down Ikea. Two huge money-rakers for the region as a whole. When will our region stop making mistakes like this! I still think the area is viable. It could still happen on I-271 closer to the I-480 split. Enough land in Garfield, but I doubt Ikea would ever build on a landfill. Them Swede's are smarter than the Walmart kinda companies.
  15. On the edge of University Circle, actually in Fairfax, but this thread seems appropriate. E. 83rd and Carnegie, just west of Cleveland Playhouse/MOCA.. they have cleared an entire block and have begun building something or at least laying pipes. It's behind McDonald's and Rally's on Euclid. Anyone know what is "quietly" going on here?

The new plan is good and bad. I am a little pissed about Coral's or whoever's idea it is to put parking in front just like the plaza on the other side of the street. Why is it so damn hard to put the building up on the sidewalk!?!?!?! Anyways, that's the bad of it. The good is that there will be a multi-level parking garage in the rear of the center main building for the rest of the parking. Also good is that we'll see mixed-use multi-level buildings with office and loft space above retail. This will be similar to Crocker Park, but not as big. While I hate Crocker Park because it's on a former farm cornfield, this project as similar as it is, is being built in an already built-out urban setting. I am very curious to see what sort of retail we're going to see, as Legacy Village, Le Place, Beachwood Place, Cedar Center South, University Center, Cedar-Lee, Coventry, and Severance Circle are within a one- or two-mile radius. With that said, we know what we won't see. There is a Border's at Le Place and Severance Circle, as well as a Joseph Beth at Legacy. I am curious to see if a Barnes & Noble will take the rotunda shaped corner building. Marc's said they won't be re-building, since they have the Coventry and Mayfield-Green locations still. Also interesting is that most of the small shops already re-located, such as Anatolia. My initial guess as to what retail we might see: a national brand restaurant such as TGI Friday's or Panera. I am sure Chipotle will be back. The entire east side is filled with the same old boring garbage retail as well as a mix of amazing independent stuff. This project will probably be full of national brands, but it's gonna be interesting to see what happens because most of the stuff that sucks is already at places like Severance Circle. This post is getting long but I am trying to get to my point... What we know WON'T be at Cedar Center North: NO movie theatre, NO grocery store, NO Dick's Sporting Goods, NO Marshall's/TJ Maxx, NO Target/Wal-Mart. NO Jo-Ann's. NO Gamestop. NO Quizno's, Subway, or Bruegger's Bagels. NO fitness center. NO Home Depot. No Applebee's. No national retailer will have a location at Severance and Cedar Center or Legacy and Cedar Center. So what's missing from the local area that there is not too many of already? Trader Joe's, of which Whole Foods is very close to the other east side Trader Joe's, so it is entirely possible. Also, no need for clothing apparel as Legacy and Beachwood Place have that pretty much covered. The coolest thing about this project is that now 3 of the 4 corners of Cedar and Warrensville will have rather unique retail separate from each other which all include multi-level parking garages and multi-level retail. I can't think of anywhere else in NE Ohio that has reached that level yet.
  17. This project sucks! I really hope it falls through. It is so ignorant that this is being built, especially in Twinsburg. This will hurt Cleveland and Akron. It will help no one but Twinsburg and the developer. I think there is still hope since the soccer stadium in Twinsburg has been put off. Everyone moving to Twinsburg, all this new development. What in the hell is so good about it? It's an exurb. Can exurbs ever be cool???????? Never!
  18. So then, I'll ask the question someone else asked a few weeks back that nobody seems to know the answer to: What is going on at Chester and E. 18th? It's a parking lot across from Rhodes Tower. It's fenced off now. Also, they have begun work on the parking garage/facility adjacent to the Wolstein Center.
  19. How has it changed so much since 2000? I think the 2006-07 data conflicts this way too much to be accurate in any sense: As of the census of 2000, there were 21,802 people, 7,554 households, and 6,171 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,060.8 people per square mile (409.6/km²). There were 7,801 housing units at an average density of 379.6/sq mi (146.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.79% White, 6.12% African American, 0.04% Native American, 4.91% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.70% of the population. African American and Asian pops double in 7 years? And Latino stays the same? Ummm, also, Glenwillow apparently is even more white. I don't think demographics census reports are ever accurate. I'd say Solon is 92% white, 4% Asian, and 2% African American and 2% other. OK, so I'm only guessing, but the bottom line is: Solon is NOT diverse or anywhere near! Try Shaker Heights/C. Hts/S. Euclid/U. Hts for diversity.
  20. Yes! It's called Mamma Mia's and it's on Madison near Ridgewood and Birdtown. It's an older pizza shop that added a second menu for vegans. It's very good food and being vegan, that is pretty much the only pizza I will eat, since they actually can make a pizza with vegan cheese and meats which is something I have not seen anywhere else in Cleveland! Also, the owner is offering subs and antipasto salads using vegan cheeses and meats. It's very delicious and one of the best places to try in Lakewood! BTW, if you are vegan, Melt also added vegan cheese to their menu, opening a foray of options up such as grilled cheeses!

No ofense to some of the posts above, but they're quite off. The Cleveland metro is not 1/2 of Atlanta's. Not only does Atlanta's MSA include 20, yes 20 counties, but if you count the sqft of Atlanta metro and plop the same sqft in NE OHio, you have over 4 million (which includes Youngstown). The current CLE MSA is what, Cuyahoga, Lake, and Lorain? So 3 counties vs. 20? Cleveland is 77 sq miles, Atlanta is 132 sq miles. And just for the fun of it, Columbis is 212 sq miles........ Of course Atlanta is twice the size of CLE................................ and of course Columbus is the 6th biggest city in the USA.. I'm sure this method of statistics helps Anchorage so that the entire metroplex of Alaksa ranks higher.... yeah, sure, right, okay! Some of you guys like to minimize Cleveland because you are used to the PD and the media doing it. I won't get into another MSA argument on this forum since it has happened before, but I am sick of people saying how small Cleveland is to Atlanta, Columbus or any other mid-sized city. The problem is that Cleveland's city proper sqft is very small compared to Columbus. Columbus and now Louisville or some other city annexed and immediately, the city population is stupendous. That is why Columbus is like the 6th biggest city in the USA yet the Cleveland metro blows Columbus' away. I guess it's Cleveland's fault for not annexing the entire county. Because that is what Columbus and Atlanta are - the entire county! If Cleveland did that, it'd be a city of 1.4 million, and one of the 5 biggest cities in the USA. The same applies to the MSA sqft of Cleveland vs. Atlanta. CLE+ is about equal to Atlanta metro. When the MSA's can make more sense and start including Akron (and eventually Youngstown and Canton) with Cleveland's MSA and stop including villages 150 miles from Atlanta with their MSA, I will take the MSA seriously. Until then, it makes no sense to call Cleveland this little small place, this dying city, the 100th biggest city, bla bla bla. Yeah, at this rate of minimizing the city, eventually Cleveland will be the 5th smallest city in the country, even smaller than Lakewood, the metro will be 300,000 people.... which is why MSA "official stats" and the media propaganda makes it hard to realize how big Cleveland and it's suburbs really are. Also, several of you are saying that these long commutes that exist elsewhere don't exist here. I know several people who ride Laketran and live in Ashtabula, Kingstown, and even Conneaut! That's about 80+ miles. I also know people who ride the Metro into Summit County, which in many parts of south Summit county is 60 miles or more. A lot of people do this, not just a few.
  22. Damn, I keep driving by daily and forget my camera. I want some pictures for memories! I DJ in Rhodes Tower and will take some pics from way up above looking down once they start thrashing the back end of the cage.
  23. Oh goodie, another steak/pork chop party house. Why doesn't downtown Cleveland have a vegetarian restaurant in which NYC has 200+ of those!?! Not that I am against a shithole like this place filling in another void, I am positive I will never dine there. Hell, I thought Hoggy's in Valley View already epitomized this stuff. Vegeterranean in Akron is solid and I hope a developer can see how successful a vegan restaurant popped up in downtown Akron. But what is the difference between all these steak out places. The only difference between this place and a Ponderosa and Houlihan's is the name and logo.

This project will probably be very successful to a very specific audience. I doubt that anyone from the central Cleveland metro area will move that far away. This will be good with retiree's who have bottomless checkbooks (e.g. Avon Lake lakefront livers, Sandusky, Vermillion, Huron boathouse people, Florida residents in the summer, etc.) I do like the FLW inspired houses. I am a fan of Wrightian architecture when built with quality, no matter where it's built. the FLW house in Oberlin is very close and no matter how amazing these are, none will surpass that house in quality. But it's great to see that the green grass boxed colonial won't be amassing this project, which is what most of Lorain County consists of. I really don't see a problem with this project since it may be attracting people from all over the country/region which is what NEO needs - whether it's city center or 30 miles out. The location is way out there and is not the same as exurban sprawl. To me, sprawl is Solon, Avon, and Medina. This is quite a hike from downtown Cleveland and is very close to a niche of nice little places (e.g. Oberlin and Wellington). I'm more concerned with Avon/Avon Lake clearing 500 acres for their new stadium and housing. Or Macedonia trying to build a soccer stadium. Also very bothered by the Strongsville development at I-71 and RT82. Those are things that don't need to be in the suburbs because they present no unique opportunities. However, there are no quarries in Cleveland. There are no quarries of this nature anywhere in the country.
