Cleveland: Asiatown: Development and News
Besides Asia Town Center and the Asian Plaza's Park 2 Shop expansion, there is something going on around E. 36th and Payne, near Kan Zam Plaza and Dave's. I believe a new owner of a warehouse is working on a "store/restaurant" conversion.

Does the name have anything to do with Gray's Armory one block over?

Cleveland: Unique Buildings for Sale??
The Cadillac building at the corner of E. 30th and Chester is amazing! It's on the historic registars list and is priced around 1.7-2.1 million. There is another 4 story warehouse/office combo building on Perkins and E. 33rd (one building over from me) and it's asking is like $700,000 and it'd make for one hell of a conversion building.

Anyone ever seen the the Park Avenue underpass in midtown NYC?? The CC roundabouts could benefit from a rised median for thru RTA traffic. Hmm..

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
I live on Clifton in Lakewood and work downtown. As I said before, I am still not sure how I feel about all of this. It will slow my commute to work. Bad. But it will open new opportunities to the city. Good. But before I can accept or not accept this plan, I have a few questions I would love to ask the city, ODOT, and the people who are soooo supportive of the changes: 1. We are hearing about opening up land for development as a result of the West Shoreway rehab. Who's to say this land will be developed? We have land ALL OVER the city that is prime land for development and it's been prime land since the beginning of time. Think of parking lots in Public Square, empty buildings on Euclid, beautiful views of the city and Lake Erie from Lakeside Avenue which are just fields of weeds surrounded by industrial wastelands. I could go on, but you get the drift. So who's to say that this new land will be developed? Suppose it just sits there and nothing happens? Where is the committment from developers? Who is interested in this land? Is anybody? Or is this all "hopes and dreams"? 2. We're hearing about extra land added to Edgewater Park. Will this land be used effectively or will it just become grass? 3. If the city of Cleveland hasn't abolished red light and speed cameras by the time this project is completed, how many of these can we expect to see lining the new boulevard? 4. By taking away a mass transit highway and turning it into a 35-mph zone, we must assume that this new boulevard will literally be swamped by traffic. The people in the Edgewater neighborhood, Lakewood, and Rocky River won't just suddenly dissapear. They'll be eager to speed in this new zone. Howabout decreasing traffic and congestions by creating a Rapid Transit that runs from downtown all the way thru Lakewood along Clifton? Why not? We have 50 million for this and 100 million for that. What's stopping a rapid transit besides cash flow? Is there anyone that thinks a boulevard would trigger eco. development but a rapid transit wouldn't? So why spend x amount of dollars on this W. Shoreway plan knowing that a rapid line would definately seal the deal!?

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
This entire plan, is going to either do a lot of good or a lot of bad. I change my mind almost daily on whether I support it or not. One way for me to support this would be if the entire BLVD is lined with highrises similar to that of the QEW headed into Toronto. As you enter the city, their shoreway is lined on both sides with new residential towers that continue to replace a previously stale part of the city. The premise is perfect, but is the land that will be opened up to development going to be used sparingly and effectively or is it just going to be 20-30 mansions with big backyards overlooking the Lake/park below? I'd rather see this become a counterpart to the Gold Coast. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to develop some lakefront (or almost lakefront) land PROPERLY! Regardless of the cutesy little color coded maps that show proposed density levels along this new BLVD, I would really like to see it developed as densely as possible in entirety.

Why doesn't downtown Cleveland have....
I'd prefer a 24/7 pharmacy drug shop downtown.. the CVS at E.9 and Euclid or the one at E.9 and Hamilton. And I'm saying "pretty please" nicely!

Cleveland Areas for Immigrants
Howabout Little Italy for the Italians!!! and of course Slavic Village for Slovakian and Polish (however, in recent years, this has deteriorated and many have moved to Parma and/or Garfield Heights, with the well-to-do moving out to Sagamore Hills)
-
So let's define downtown Cleveland in our own words!
^ Additionally, University Circle is separate from Little Italy, Ambleside, the old "Doan's Corner" area, and Lakeview Cemetery (Cleveland's share of it). At least one building near the Triangle at Euclid/Mayfield has "Uptown" in the name.

Looking for black and white pics
Hi there! If you are interested in any additional B&W photo's of architecture in Cleveland, let me know, that is my specialty! I am going to have some work on display in the WHD in the next 2 weeks, so when it is up, you can wander down and see it and decide for yourself! :D

So let's define downtown Cleveland in our own words!
Forget the maps and district boundaries for a minute. I say downtown Cleveland is not just the area where the tall buildings shoot up into the sky. I see it like this: Downtown: Ohio City (upto W. 26)/Tremont/Flats/Downtown's traditional area/Chinatown/Quadrangle MidTown: anything between E. 55th-E. 105th between Lake Erie and Cedar Uptown: University Circle/Little Italy I am sure we all have our own definitions and boundary lines. So let's hear what you think! And if you agree with city council district lines, then we don't need your enlightening and corrections. It's all for fun folks!

Ohio City or Tremont (Cleveland)
Detroit Shoreway! Heh! But seriously: Ohio City is more about bars, getting drunk, and has the whole city life feeling along W. 25/26 mixed with some of the best damn architecture in the state of Ohio! There is a lot of gentrification mixed into the neighborhood, so you'll see a very big mix of demographics. Highlights include the infill projects on every other block, City Xpressions, and the Openair Market! whereas Tremont is more about art galleries, studios, expensive restaurants, and very expensive townhomes on the eastern side. Gentrification has basically taken over the entire eastern edge of the neighborhood and now most of the old "real" heart of Tremont has become a rehab central. Fewer pedestrians because it's not as city-oriented as Ohio City is. Highlights include the artwalks, summer festivals, and Lincoln Park and surrounding shops.

Cleveland's young professionals: West Side or East?
West side 100%... 20-30 in age, hip, artsy, trendy, professional, art galleries, emerging scenes, the place to be, etc: 1. Cleveland's near west side neighborhoods: Tremont/Ohio City/Detroit Shoreway 2. Lakewood/Edgewater neighborhood/Clifton Blvd./Lake Avenue also, I wouldn't want to forget the east meets west area too: 3. Downtown (WHD/Flats Westbank/E4th) The only place a young professional will live on the east side is Little Italy, and at that, it's mostly college students going to CIA/CWRU.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Dear Cleveland Clinic, Please don't ever plant grass again. You are making me sick with your suburban landscapes. Stop it, and please listen to our cries for a more urban campus. Maybe????

Lakewood: Development and News
There is a new bookstore closer to Lakewood residents than Crocker Park. It's in Rocky River on Detroit, near the Lakewood border. I am running blanks on the name of the bookstore or the name of the new mini plaza that it sits inside of (it's like a baby Crocker Park, and I mean *baby* sized, but it has a # of upscale stores not traditionally found in a normal plaza).

Cleveland taxi cab stuff
I've used a taxi cab in Cleveland numerous times.. the only fuss I ever had was having to call for a taxi each time rather than being able to stand on a main street and wave one down. I waited 20 minutes on W. 25th on a Friday night near Bier Market last year and not one taxi drove by. Needed to get to Cleveland Heights and it was cold out! I also had to call for one to pick me up at the Grand Arcade to go to Lakewood. But once my cabby shows up, it's always A1 service.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Several recent homicides, I have been lazy and haven't posted any in months. But two this week, making the total count for the year still less than 2005 (which I think we all can say is a good thing with the way things were going during the summertime).. 1. West. 65th and Clark, an elderly woman is found in a boarded up home in the basement. She suffered a brutal death but investigators declined to comment further until an autopsy can be performed. Son-in-law has been arrested and may be a suspect. 2. Cleveland Clinic employee is shot dead on the corner of St. Clair and Addison. The 3rd death this year within a 1 mile radius!

Destination Lakewood: How a bar town became an immigration hotspot
I have never heard about any of these until just now. I also don't think Lakewood has that amazingly high gay population everyone speaks of. I think it's definately the Edgewater neighborhood of Cleveland where it's all at, between Detroit and Lake Avenue and between West Blvd. and West 117th. As for Lakewood, anything near the Gold Coast seems to be the concentrated area in the city.

Cleveland: Tri-C Metro Development Projects
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) recently announced that a new Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Library was to be built on the Metro Campus in downtown Cleveland (The Quadrangle). It would reside on E. 30th St. at Woodland Avenue. Not my favorite spot for this to be built, but nonetheless, another great addition to our city! I don't have any other info. so at the request of other members, any full articles or announcements available at this time?
