  1. Park2Shop is now under construction at E. 30th St. between Payne and Superior in Chinatown, one block from the new Mueller Lofts. Damned if I could remember what was there before, but it looks like it'll be quite a large marketplace when completed. Too bad the parking lot is in front of the building and not behind, or not at all. I know we get a lot of the "no supermarkets downtown" argument, but to me, Chinatown is clearly a part of downtown. This is great news that not only another market is underway in downtown, but also that an Asian market is coming to as Asian neighborhood. It's these small pockets that get filled over and over that make up a true neighborhood! Any other word on this project?!
  2. I'm sorry.. panhandlers/homeless people in downtown cleveland is nothing! Tell that to those living in the suburbs.
  3. Dear DCA Crew, Please don't spend all day and night hanging out at the corner of W. 6th and St. Clair - we don't need you on the safest and trendiest blocks - but thanks for the nice gesture. We need you to show more presence at and around Public Square. I can't help but notice many of you guys like to have 20 minute convo's with some of the business people who cross paths with you. Granted, they might be the ones who pay you, but please spend your time focusing on the removal of panhandlers. I am okay with the beggers, but unfortunately, a lot of the suburbanites aren't and until it stops, we can just continue to have a downtown reputation full of spite.
  4. The building lets out a mighty illumination when the sun hits it in the late afternoon. I saw it in full glare from I-90 near W. 65th and thought it was very beautiful from the distance - from that angle it's also stands out in the skyline. Too bad they want to tear down what little we have..
  5. I too get lost in Tremont to this day. And I almost never get lost. I think it has to do with the streets taking the grid system at a 45 degree angle and using names such as "Professor" and "Thurman" instead of the typical #'s. Which is one more reason I love Tremont!
  6. ^ The one down by the Industrial Valley, it's known as "The Tremont Dog Park".
  7. Let's get the ball rolling with a thread devoted entirely to Tremont! Let's begin by getting a roundup of all existing or recently completed projects. Anyone, anyone? 8-)

That's wonderful news! My business just re-located into this "district" at E. 33rd and Perkins, and I see a lot of potential all around, especially along Chester/Euclid!!
  9. I just bought a house on Clifton in Lakewood instead of a place at the Walker & Weeks Building in downtown. I have a lot of faith in downtown, but I chose Lakewood because of its dense, urban atmosphere. Lakewood is full of joggers, bikers, dog walkers, public transit riders and also has a nice retail mix which downtown Cleveland is still lacking. I can look out my window at almost any hour of the day and see pedestrians doing their thing. I live within walking distance to 2 Drug Marts, a Marc's, 2 Giant Eagle's, a Tops, and 5-10 other 24-hour stores. There's children, there's senior citizens, there's middle class people, there's all kinds of people. And lots of them! It's an urban mix of people and retail that made me move here.
  10. ^ This is a real problem and has been evolving in the last decade. A lot of gentrification that took place in Tremont and Ohio City in recent years has forced the problems into neighborhoods that were once a lot safer.
  11. i'm totally doing one for cleveland (gotta include c hts and lakewood tho!), this is an awesome concept and i think cleveland has 10 very nice blocks! stay tuned!

It's nice to know that Cleveland metro has 2 full-service airports on the map. One of many reasons I see the population growing in years to come, as opposed to shrinking.
  13. it'd be nice if flyers or brochures for downtown living were passed out at crocker park.. i think mayday is correct in analyzing the thoughts of some people choosing to live at crocker park. the next step is getting people to choose downtown over crocker park. real city vs. fake city, but moreso, we must convince others that cleveland is welcoming and improve that image of ghetto, poor, etc. that many suburbanites have!

26 of the first (of hopefully many) units to surround Public Square. Here's to forwardthinking!
  15. Hey Akronites, what's the big construction site and crane right outside of downtown near Elizabeth Valley????? Saw it from RT-8 and was intrigued!
  16. Detroit Shoreway will make the news again after last night's botched robbery at Edgewater Delicatessen (W. 87 and Lake). One clerk was killed, another seriously wounded. This is the same Deli that someone else was killed 1-2 years ago in a robbery. This is just a few blocks from the double artist shooting on Detroit in August, just around the corner from the murder of a 20 year old the week of 8-10-06, and just a mile or two from where the officer was recently killed in Cudell. It's kinda hard to accept this area as the next Tremont or Ohio City with all this escalated violence taking place. I think we need to tackle the crime before just dropping a gentrification bomb on the neighborhood. Just a small snapshot of the area in discussion.. based on my own data (which is probably missing a few of the homicides this year), look how many murders happened in this part of Cleveland just in 2006: <img src="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/bizbizjohn/nearwest.jpg">

I think that UC will grow big time once the CC and UH complete their expansions, around the same time that the Euclid Corridor will be completed. Also with the CC/CWRU shared facility, "The Triangle" and the re-location of MOCA, we should see some housing thrown into all of that. Good examples of UC's bright future can be hinted by looking at how Woodhaven and Beacon Place are just about fully sold out. Then you have the Parklane Villa, University View, Heritage Lane, and Ashbury Houses all underway. Once the stuff on E. 105 sells out, I expect to see the developers of Ashbury Houses continue the re-hab process up and down Ashbury, as most of the houses are patiently waiting to be restored. I also think that Chinatown will become the premier loft/artist district in Cleveland that it's trying to become. About Hyacinth Lofts and Slavic Village: I always thought Slavic Village was the area encompassing Fleet, Broadway, and Harvard?? Hyacinth Lofts are way up by E. 55th and I-490's terminus point. Not to say Slavic Village doesn't have potential, but I would say North Collinwood and Overlook Dr. are the epicenter of Cleveland's film culture - you have a very tight knit group living in that area and they displayed their powers by hosting the over-successful outdoor film fesitval at Overlook Park in August; Many of the neighborhood's residents showed their involvement in the Cleveland film industry. Not to mention Donnybrook, Welcome To Collinwood, and the 2-3 short's shown at the film festival last month which were done by North Collinwood residents.
  18. I will make my stance clear right up front: Me, my family, and many of my dearest friends are all long-time supporters of the Beck Center For Arts - if Beck leaves Lakewood for Westlake, I will no longer be a supporter and I will make ends meet without ever driving to Crocker Park.
  19. thank you buckeye1, would love to hear of anymore you know about!!
  20. There has always been crime in these neighborhood's and it's not a major change from the last years, just a bit higher. All else remains the same, meaning that murders, drugs, rape, and theft are all still going to be expected. The police officer being shot and killed is a tragedy, but it's not like all of the sudden that the Cudell and Detroit-Shoreway 'hoods are becoming horrible places overnight.
  21. Whoa, I was on Madison/98th last night near the time of the incident and remembered seeing cop cars all over the place, wondering what happened. I knew it wouldn't be good. :x Mayday or Jamiec, this man who stands outside on the corner - what does he look like? Is he an older white guy with a ponytail? There was something going down at Detroit and W. 117/116 last night that involved 3 Lakewood cop cars (on the Cleveland side) along with this un-uniformed man, they were there for quite a while lamenting over something that had happened, right by Pizza Hut.
  22. Can anyone provide a list or names of mental institutions in the state of ohio, preferrably NE Ohio?? Couldn't find this info. anywhere on the web!
  23. anyone know more on these "districts" or "neighborhoods" in lakewood: Berkshire Captains Cove Edgewater Indian Heights the other 3 are already defined: bird's nest (aka birdtown), clifton park, and the gold coast.
  24. sorry, i got the cincy or columbus count mixed up with Cle's count.. but as of sunday 8-27, it's now 82, but you are probably right: a lot of stuff goes un-documented!
  25. There was a homicide on 8-24-06 around E. 79th which according to the PD, marks the 79th homicide of the year! I believe this tops all of 2005 and it's only August!!!!!! And don't forget last year got 8-10 more added on to the count from an arson fire that killed the children on E. 105th. I also want to point out that Akron is also going to have one hell of a count on the homicides when the year is up. I see more homicides in the news in Akron than I do in Cleveland. Let's hope the winter makes everyone stay indoors and stop killing each other!
