  1. 2 days ago I saw a 25-30 year old black guy coming out of the home and unlocking the fence to leave. I believe he was in the exterior living quarters. However, Milsaps is a white guy with a goatee. I wonder how many people actually live in there and what the hell is REALLY going on inside. I have heard so much buzz about this new "gentleman's club" which is no more than longstanding propaganda.
  2. Just to clarify, the Detroit-Superior Lofts are NOT the same as the already completed Detroit Avenue Lofts (http://www.detroitavenuelofts.com), which are currently next to the Federal Knitting Mills, both of which are both across the street and over one block from this new project. I was confused about this due to naming similarities.
  3. Awesome, thanks GA_Lancer! Have you any info. on some of the other names mentioned?
  4. The Federal Knitting Mills Apartments/Lofts - Detroit Avenue near W. 28th St. The Merrell Building Lofts - W. 25th St. @ Carroll Avenue The Townhomes of Ohio City - W. 32nd St. @ Clinton Avenue
  5. I thought maybe we could start a discussion exclusively about Ohio City - projects, events, and other happenings in the near west side neighborhood of Cleveland! Maybe we could round up the troops and find out who here on Urban Ohio lives in Ohio City as well as put together a list of all known projects taking place in the neighborhood.
  6. Public Square as it stands, is very upsetting to me and I'm more than delighted to hear that something may finally be done about the barebone feeling that it presents. I think that the Plain Dealer (who did a cover story on this) and the economic study group at CWRU deserve a lot of credit for sending this into hot topic mode. I'm a huge Cleveland fan and love just about every inch of it, but for some odd reason, I find Tower City and PS to be two of the most un-enjoyable places to be in downtown Cleveland. The front doors of TC are nothing more than a massive bus stop. Inside the mall, we have very few stores worth visiting. I like what the subway/rr station beneath USED to be, and can deal with what it is now, but what else does the mall have to offer besides that and two nice hotels? Let's carry this PS revival right into the mall and fix that shithole up as well.. and open the damn observation deck more than once a year. I suppose a mall can survive next door to a lifestyle center (just look at Legacy Village and Beachwood Mall). With that said, Stark's new lifestyle center is key to PS and TC succeeding the future - it will be his project that brings the most people downtown (to shop at, to live at, and to work at) and PS's revitalization will be a nicely added perk.
  7. a couple homicides and other significant crimes over the weekend of 6-9 - 6-11 in and around Cleveland: ~ E. 133rd St. in East Cleveland on 6-8-06, male, gunshot. ~ A police car was stolen from the 200 block of St. Clair Ave. ~ Cleveland male ran into traffic on I-77 and got hit by a car and died, near the Copley Road exit in Akron. ~ East Buchtel Avenue man stabbed to death, in Akron. ~ 2 CPD officers were injured trying to arrest a suspect in a homicide case from a week earlier. This happened at E. 71st and Woodland. ~ Man shot and killed at Broadview/Mayview on the near west side on 6-10-06. ~ 8 year old was shot while a gun battle in 1000 block of E. 72nd St. was taking place. He is recovering in Rainbow Babies. ~ A house fire in the W. 70th and Clinton area claimed one life on 6-9-06. Fire officials have ruled out arson (for now!) ~ A W. 11th St. house in Tremont's neighborhood recently got raided by officials from several departments. They found 100's of chickens and other animals inhumanely caged up that were used for cockfighting. This story appeared in the 6-10 and 6-11 PD's Metro section if you would like more information.
  8. No. The Ritz Carlton, HOB, and Hard Rock Cafe are not even comparable to something like a Trader Joe's, H&M, or a Cheesecake Factory. World-renowned tourist attractions only found in select cities are not the same as trendy national chain stores found in every corner of every city. You're comparing golden apples to rotten eggs.
  9. Cleveland always gets those big name companies that are in limited cities only. None of which are exclusive to Cleveland but quite unique to the industrial cities in the USA: Hard Rock Cafe House Of Blues Ritz Carlton
  10. I just found out on a google search that Big Italy was located from E. 9th St. to E. 40th St. between Woodland and Orange, and was the largest Italian settlement in Cleveland in the 1920's until it became the inner belt. Today it's public housing, Tri-C, part of the inner belt, and so forth.
  11. I was working with a map program, powered by MapQuest and I came upon some very bizarre sounding and unheard of landmarks, neighborhoods, junctions, or pointers on the map. I've only heard of a few of these, but they must exist - why would a map program make this stuff up!!? I wonder if some are old neighborhoods prior to the naming of the current 27 in the city. Well anyways, listen to some of these: on the east side of Cleveland: Dutch Alley - Woodland @ E. 73rd St. Big Italy - Woodland @ E. 34th St. Ambler Heights (near Stokes Blvd. @ University Circle, where Ambleside Towers are at) Euclid Heights - Near Coventry/Cedar Poznan - Superior @ E. 79th St. Collamer Coits - Eddy Road @ I-90 Doan's Corners - Where Euclid, Stokes, and Chester intersect. Little Bohemia - Broadway @ Pershing Karlin - Fleet @ E. 53rd St. Nottinggam - St. Clair @ Nottingham/E. 185th St. Sorrento - Miles @ E. 143rd St. Josephatowa - St. Clair @ E. 32nd St. Henry - On Broadway near Calvary Cemetery Four Points - E. 152nd St. near I-90/Railroad Tracks Five Points - St. Clair @ E. 152nd St. Manhattan Beach - Lakeshore @ E. 152nd St. The west side of Cleveland: Westpark North Linndale McKinley Lakewood: Birds Nest - Near Madison between Bunts and W. 117th Clifton Park Broadview Hts: Walling Corners <Edit> Others I found: Bement Bennetts Corners - Brunswick/North Royalton Binola Bluestone Eagle Cliff Falls Junction Jaite Noble North Dover Short Line Junction West Dover

could it? not sure! but I sure hope so!
  14. Thanks KJP for that link. But that just re-iterates the "major rehabilitation" of I-480 from Tuxedo to VV Bridge. What does that actually entail? Anybody?
  15. Will somebody elaborate on what is going on at I-480 and I-77's interchange. I initially thought I knew what was going on: build a new bridge deck to widen I-77's overpass. However, I am probably wrong. The construction zone in this area is OUT OF CONTROL. From the Tuxedo Lane/Brookpark Road/Jennings 176 exit all the way to the east end of the Valley View bridge, I-480 is totally messed up. Plus, from the east end of the Valley View bridge all the way to I-271, they are now repaving that in a 3-phase. Here's what I have seen so far happening: -I-77 south, the I-480 west exit is closed for 5 months -I-480 east, the I-77 north exit is closed for 5 months -I-480 west, the I-77 south exit is shifted to left shoulder lane only -I-480 west, the I-77 north exit is shifted to left shoulder lane only -I-480 west thru the I-77 interchange is now only 2 lanes, shifted left beginning all the way back ON the Valley View bridge -I-480 east thru the I-77 interchange, they are setting up some new equipment -I-77 and I-480 throughout now have I-480 detours posted for miles in all directions -The Valley View bridge is completely messed up with all sorts of lane shifts, new speed limit, and new signage everywhere -I-480 being repaved currently in east from Broadway to I-271, including I-480's split to I-271 and the I-480/I-271 shared segment, plus Warrensville/Northfield exit is being repaved -I-480 being repaved is beginning now from west at Broadway to Valley View bridge. -Additionally, the connecting I-271 is being repaved from the 422/480/271 split all the way to Fairmount, local lanes only. MAJOR SLOWDOWNS and nobody knows the masterplan of this 3 year, 30 million dollar project, other than to "rehabilitate I-480"? I can't seem to find any info on the ODOT website about details of this massive project.
  16. A neighborhood I frequently pass thru, but never on foot. I think you a) took a lot of beautiful pictures and b) had a lot of courage to take Storer by foot and take pictures while you're at it. :-D
  17. IX Center Amount of undeveloped lakefront still remaining Cedar Point.. Is that one of our assets? :)
  18. Marc Glassman?
  19. There is an undercover drug operation inside Washington Square Park in NYC.. I was approached many times by bad ass "drug dealers" right in the open. Turns out, its a major undercover operation. I wouldn't expect that to be going on in Cleveland, but you never know. Public Square is the centerpoint of Cleveland, it can't be THAT EASY to pull it off. If this is a common occurrance, then more and more people would report it and you'd see the activity move somewhere else once the perimter becomes a "known drug deal hot spot". They may be on a narcotics or undercover drug task force. Those forces hire guys who look like real dealers, some of which used to be real dealers and have experience.

  21. Very nice pictures!
  22. How could I forget the Maxine Levine Goodman College Of Urban Affairs. #2 in the country, and probably the only masters of Urban Design in Ohio. Downtown also has a Kent State branch for Urban Design on Prospect/Huron.
  23. Zaremba's Woodhaven project in MidTown has evolved very quickly and successfully. I don't doubt Avenue District's success one bit because to me, Zaremba is one of the leading developers in Cleveland. Woodhaven is spectacular and he made a blighted area become a trendy and desirable place to live - extending the safety and comfortability found at the Cleveland Clinic all the way down to the low E. 80's.
  24. As if it wasn't congested enough, ODOT is closing the I-77 South to I-480 E/W ramp and the I-480 East to I-77 North ramp down for 5 months to build a new "bridge deck". I believe this will be used to widen I-77 where it goes from 3 lanes to 2 lanes and back to 3 lanes at the interchange. This bridge would allow 3 continuous lanes to Pleasant Valley Road. When this is completed, they will begin a widening of I-77 from Rockside Road to RT. 82. From Rockside to PV will be widened from 3 to 4 lanes and from PV to RT. 82 will be widened from 2 to 3 lanes. Many are asking why it will cost so much when the majority of the widening will be grass in the median. The answer would be 2 reasons: 1) A lot of bridges and underpasses will need replaced, with the biggest task being Pleasant Valley Road, since it's not fit for widening. 2) Much of I-77 from Rockside Road to Pleasant Valley is situated on an uneven hill, where the northbound lanes are beneath the southbound lanes. Widening them next to each other is not feasible unless high walls are placed on the sides, so I am guessing that the lanes will be raised/lowered to solve this problem and it will probably be the most expensive task in widening I-77.
  25. So Cleveland is prone to getting a bad reputation (sometimes). But let's face it, we have a lot of great things in Cleveland to be proud of. So I decided to make a list of what Cleveland has that is unique or something important to Cleveland that other cities lack or wish they had. Feel free to add on to this list freely! LeBron James - today's most beloved player in the NBA and possibly in all of sports. Key Tower - the tallest building in Ohio, tallest between Chicago and NYC, and what would be a top 5 building if placed in the NYC skyline. The Cleveland Clinic - one of the biggest and best heart clinics and hospitals for that matter in the country. The Euclid Corridor - we all know what it is, let's just see what kind of impact this makes when it's completed. The Cleveland Orchestra - one of the best, if not the best. Tri-C Jazz Fest - one of the most respected jazz festivals in the country. Playhouse Square (and Cleveland performing arts) - one of the best in the country. Lake Erie - we are situated on one of just 5 fresh water lakes in the whole world. Most Affordable City To Live In - something to be ecstatic about (and to take advantage of)! Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame - a Cleveland exclusive. Little Italy + Chinatown - if you think about it, not many cities have a Little Italy or Chinatown. Sure, other cities have them but only a few. University Circle - all the museums, hospitals, institutions, and schools make this a very UNIQUE place to work, live, or hang out. The Cuyahoga National Valley Park - one of the best national parks in the country and its only 10 minutes from Cleveland and it's the only national park in Ohio! Our football, baseball, and basketball stadiums/arenas are all located downtown. I guess this is more of a common feat, but NYC can't say the same thing still to this day. To add to that, Cleveland is the only city in Ohio and our region (with the exception of Detroit) to have a national baseball, basketball, AND football team. I-271 Express/Local lanes - I never looked into it, but I have a feeling not many cities have an express/local segment of freeway. I believe it's the only one in Ohio. Continental Airlines Hub - just 3 exist and Cleveland is one of them. Peter B. Lewis Building in CWRU - Unique indeed, although he (Gehry) continues to build similar projects in other cities.
