Metro Cleveland: Road & Highway News
Streets with multiple names! Let's see how many MAIN ARTERIAL ROADS we can find in the greater Cleveland area that change names through a continuous drive. THE OBVIOUS: Bagley > W. Pleasant Valley > E. Pleasant Valley > Alexander > Pettibone Snow > Rockside Kinsman > Chagrin Pearl > W. 25th Cooper Foster Park > N. Ridge > Detroit > Superior (Longest E-W I know, from Amherst to Cleveland Heights) Lorain > Carnegie RT17: Brookpark > Granger > Libby Woodworth > Noble > Warrensville Center E. 260 > Richmond Ridge (in Wickliffe) > Bishop > Brainard W. 150 > Warren Woodland > Larchmere E. 185 > Nottingham > Dille > Highland Buckeye > S. Woodland W. 210 > Wagar Columbia > Greath Northern Blvd. Bradley > Chestnut Ridge W. 117 > Memphis RT82: Elyria-Twinsburg > W. Royalton Road > E. Royalton > Chippewa > W. Aurora > E. Aurora > Cannon RT8: Northfield > Highway 8 > I-77 RT18: E. Washington St. > Medina Rd. > W. Market > E. Market RT91: SOM Center > Darrow > N. Main > S. Main > Darrow > N. Avenue > S. Avenue > Darrow > Canton > Cleveland NW > Cleveland SW > E. Sparta (Longest N-S, from Lake Erie to south of Canton) THE NOT-SO-OBVIOUS: Valley Parkway > Barrett > Nobottom Hauserman > Tiedeman Mastic > Puritas > Bellaire > W105 Ford Drive > Mayfield I-90 > I-490 (technically, to continue on I-90, you must exit to the right, whereas I-490 is continuous) There's so many more, who knows them? :)

Cleveland East/West Similarities
Lakewood (west) vs. Cleveland Heights (east) --- CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, love the mansions on Fairmount, Coventry, and Cedar-Fairmount neighborhood Westlake vs. Eastlake - WESTLAKE - as yuppy as it is, some beautiful modern mansions on the far western side of the city. Rocky River vs. Shaker Heights - SHAKER HEIGHTS - rapid transit, all of the mid-rise apartments, and Larchmere is so close. West Boulevard vs. East Boulevard (both historic districts now) - WEST BOULEVARD because it runs into Edgewater and is a lot safer than E. Blvd. Crocker Park (west) vs. Legacy Village (east) - CROCKER PARK because Legacy Village is sorta boring. Lake Avenue (Gold Coast) vs. Lakeshore Avenue (both lined with highrise apartments) - LAKE AVENUE because Winton Place is a beauty! West bank of the flats vs. East bank of the flats - WEST BANK because of Stonebridge. Ohio City + Tremont vs. University Circle + Little Italy - OHIO CITY + TREMONT since I love Lincoln Park and all of Tremont. Lorain Avenue vs. Mayfield Road (as main shopping corridors) - MAYFIELD ROAD since it has more independent stores than on Lorain Southpark Mall vs. Beachwood Place (upscale malls) - BEACHWOOD PLACE because it's chic. Lorain County vs. Lake County - LAKE COUNTY for Mentor, Willoughby, and Fairport. Kamms Corners vs. Shaker Square - SHAKER SQUARE, since this was a no-brainer. I-71 vs. I-271 - I-271 because I-271 has express lanes and no jam ups ever! Bay Village's "Huntington Beach" Vs. Mentor-On-The-Lake's "Mentor Headlands Beach" - MENTOR because it's clean. Gordon Square vs. Cedar-Lee - CEDAR-LEE because of the movie theatre and countless eateries. Detroit Avenue (in Lakewood) Vs. Coventry - COVENTRY since its so developed. The mansions on Lake Avenue vs. The mansions in Bratenahl - BRATENAHL because they are absolutely some of the best architectural pieces in NE Ohio.

Cleveland: Retail News
it's funny how the biggest retailer in the world didn't have much of a presence in Cleveland 10 years ago. It's all happening now.. I think the only one that's been around a long time is the one on Brookpark Road in Brooklyn.. all the others are <10 years old. Sick stuff indeed..

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Tack another homicide for the 4/22-23 weekend.. it was another "hit-and-run", this time on E. 65th near Woodland I believe. It wasn't even in the Law & Order section of the PD..

Cleveland: Monopoly Vote
everyone vote for northcoast harbor at this point since euclid is out of the race... 35% to 40% means northcoast still has a chance! oh, and cleveland has 60,000+ votes, within 10,000 of almost every other city.. this is a close race of the 20 biggest cities..

Cleveland: Random Development and News
I've been trying to try Moriarty's on E. 6th for a few years now.. they're never open besides weekdays at lunchtime. No weekends, no evenings, no special events, no nothing. It looks fascinating inside but when will they extend the damn hours? As a matter of fact, Teahouse Noodles, Dave's Cosmic Subs, the sushi joint, and all the other small shops on E. 6th are only open weekdays at lunchtime with the exception of Domino's at the corner of E. 6th and Superior which is carryout and delivery only!! 1 block from the "oh so happening E. 4th St. Neighborhood" makes no sense to become a ghost town while E. 4th stays open.

Dubai: Developments and News
Dubai in UAE is one of the future greatest cities in the world. There's between 200-300 buildings underway right now, and many are taller than the tallest buildings in USA. The city is becoming a future metropolis and is already home to many of the world's wealthiest. Many of the richest Americans either own property there now or soon will. It won't succeed in the same ways big American cities succeed (or fail). Tourism and resorts/timeshare/summerhouse/etc. for the wealthy are the two big factors right now.

Cleveland - Huge Fire/Explosion In The Flats
Amazing pics Mayday, glad u had your camera with you.. I need to start carrying mine around everywhere I go!

Cleveland - Huge Fire/Explosion In The Flats
For the record, this happened in an area where the east numbered streets are displaced, but from a map viewpoint it's between Tri-C Metro and the Flats/Industrial Valley near E. 30th and Broadway (try to picture this area in your head, it's not easy). This is also the same industrial site that has been emitting a bad odor for years, which many people talk about since it's smelled by the 1000's of motorists who use I-77 daily and Tremont residents have long considered this a major issue. Good news: the EPA shut the company G.E.M. down today until further notice.

Cleveland - Huge Fire/Explosion In The Flats
This one's all over the news and will be the front page headline tomorrow: From www.Cleveland.com: Cleveland firefighters battled a huge fire Thursday in a industrial complex on Transport Road. An explosion sparked the blaze shortly after 12 p.m. Workers at General Environmental Management, a Flats business that treats liquid industrial and hazardous wastes, were using a large crane to move a tank when the explosion occurred, fire officials said. Black owned businesses in Ohio
A Cleveland Plain Dealer article was published today in the business section about this subject of business owners in Ohio.. it was basically the same things above re-written by the PD editorial staff. What's different is that the PD used county-wide stats and Cleveland (Cuyahoga) was highest, but the above articles show it as 3rd most..once again showing the uselessness of these studies when you don't use the MSA stats.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
When I graduated from CSU in May 2005, the only construction that even took place in my 6 years at the college was when I first started as a student - the Urban Affairs Building and the James J. Nance Business School had just been completed, along with the skywalk to the Law Building and a parking garage behind the Business Building. And that entire west-end project was the only thing that happened to the campus while I was a student. But by 2004, I began to hear all about new projects and plans for the revitalization of CSU and became quite intrigued. I actually graduated the same month that the courtyard was finally re-built and the demolition of the old Rec Center took place. In less than a year, the following have taken place (which just shows the progress being made): -New covered soccer dome between Chester and Payne (already completed) -New rec center on Chester (nearing completion) -New rec center parking garage on Chester (50% built out) -Parker Hannifin Building on Euclid (30% built out) -Parker Hannifin Annex between Euclid and Prospect (beginning soon) -Howe Mansion renovations (recently started) -Fenn Tower renovations/conversions (nearing completion) -E. 19th St. Extension to connect from Chester to Prospect (recently started) -Wolstein Center parking garage/athetics/offices/mixed-use (recently announced) -Main Classroom expansion (begins soon) -Acquisition of the Baker's Union building nestled between the MC Parking Garage and the Law Building (finally happened after years of waiting) -New Chester gateway entrance to Library/MC All that in a year.. WOW! Plus the later planned projects that will begin when all of the above is completed (most of these are phase III and IV projects or still in the planning stages): -Education Building to-be-constructed -Demolition of UC to re-build -Demoltiion of old bookstore to build dormatories -Euclid Corridor completion -Mixed-use development along Euclid -Demolition of Viking Hall to re-build a new project? -Acquisition of Goodyear property north of the Business parking garage -Tennis courts built on top of MC garage to clear space on Chester for new development -Dorms and other mixed-use developments all along Chester and Payne where surface lots currently exist -Etc.. I haven't even been able to follow with all the development because there's so much going on at CSU alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CSU, the Cleveland Clinic, the E. 4th St. Neighborhood, University Hospitals, and CWRU all have at least 5 or more developments simultaneously happening which signifies economic strength to both the city of Cleveland and to each facility/group, respectively. In 5 years, this city will look a lot different indeed!!!

Cleveland: Retail News
Just what Cleveland needed, another Wal-Mart.. last time I checked there is a new one being built at CityView Center in Garfield Heights, just 2 suburbs to the west. Plus the new one being built in the Industrial Valley, the new one just built 2 years ago in Parma, and then the 20 or however many others in the area.. yay I can't fucking wait for the monopoly to begin..

Urban Cleveland +/- 90 years
Welcome to the forums big brother! Lakewood.. ah, the city we all know and love. I do feel that in 90 years a lot will happen to your city. Parts of Lakewood will remain the way they are while other parts of the city will decay and fade quickly into something else, maybe over the course of several era's/generations in the next 90 years. I don't see much change to the victorians and beautiful mansions that line Edgewater, Lake, and Clifton, but I do see some change in the near future, up and down Madison and Detroit. The way we view parts of Lakewood now, will be most influenced by the success or failure of the new low-rise townhomes/condo's being constructed. If they succeed, which so far have, then expect to see older establishments torn down to make way for new ones. In 90 years, your street and your specific block may be no more than a big park full of grass or a brownfield while on the other hand, it could survive quite well once people see the value of living innercity, especially when peak oil occurs. The houses in your neighborhood of Lakewood have managed to survive 90 years, but it's the next 90 that will be the time when they can quickly deteriorate without the proper maintenance. Lakewood has lost a lot of residents (>5000) in recent years and unless major urban renewal begins here and now (which appears to be happening thankfully), you may see some increased poverty and crime issues, as is currently being seen on the far eastern-edge of Lakewood between Madison and Clifton. Gentrification is slowly taking place in a number of Cleveland's west-side neighborhood's, Detroit Shoreway being the latest and most rapidly developing - this will push a lot of the poorer and less-privileged families out of these neighborhoods and into other nearby parts of the city such as the Stockyards and Cudell, which will then cause those people to move outward into the closest suburbs (e.g. Brooklyn and Lakewood). However, I would say that no matter how much Lakewood suffers in the next 90 years, it will be nothing compared to the likes of Parma, East Cleveland, and Garfield/Maple Hts. Lakewood is lakefront, it has a renowned library system, it's right next to a public beach, to downtown, and has great RTA access, plus Lakewood "owns" the gold coast, which is one hell of an asset. What do the other inner-rings have to support their spines when the city comes crashing down? But what happens when Cleveland becomes a big success again and all of the problems that Cleveland is facing today are eventually pushed into the inner-ring suburbs? What do the inner-rings have to fall back on? They don't have any sports teams, museums, Cleveland Clinic's, downtowns, or entertainment districts to rely on when the problems start. And that's why the aforementioned suburbs will suffer heavily (isn't it already happening to East Cleveland?) However, I do feel that Lakewood may be able to sustain itself with the continued residential developments along the arterial rodes in the city.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Sunday 4/16/06.. reports of two more homicides in Cleveland this weekend: The first one was a shooting outside of a Miles Road bar where two men were shot at, one of which died. He was a resident of Maple Heights. I can not get the address/location of the bar yet, all I know is that it was on Miles Road in the city of Cleveland. This is the second homicide this weekend involving people from Maple Heights. As reported on Friday night, two men were shot in the 15300 block of Bartlett leaving one dead and the other in critical condition. All five of the suspects taken into custody are from Maple Heights. The victim(s) however, were/are from Cleveland. Second homicide to report for today (well, right now it's not listed as a homicide but I'm sure it will become one after the coroner performs an autopsy): a male body was pulled up from Lake Erie at E. 55th St. near the marina, very close to Quay 55. That makes 5 homicides in one week in the city of Cleveland. 1. Local rapper who was killed outside Stonebridge 2. Hit-and-run at W. 118th/Lorain, the victim was hit by a school bus and Dennis Kucinich was the one who found the body in the road, as it happened right outside of his office. 3. Drive-by shooting at E. 153/Bartlett (aforementioned) leaving 1 dead, 1 critical 4. Bar shooting on Miles Road 5. Body pulled up from Lake Erie at E. 55th. #1 and #2 are both "big stories" in my opinion but got very little coverage, however, the school bus incident is currently being investigated as a possible accident that the driver was unaware of what they did. Another big story this week was the arrest of Mayor Frank Jackson's granddaughter along with her friend or boyfriend who was also arrested for having 3 guns and drugs on him at a gas station on Woodland/E. 55th.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Has anybody ever been down the one-way streets next to East Cleveland's city hall??? I saw them today for the first time and would like to comment on what I saw. I was in complete shock at how deteriorated these 3-4 streets were.. considering they are adjacent to city hall! Every single building/apartment complex was boarded up, filled with grafitti top to bottom, and all the windows were shattered. There were some apartment buildings that had outdoor corridors and were filled with piles of garbage and the architectural design on the buildings makes me think these were former public housing units that are now vacated. It was the kind of building that had exterior hallways leading towards the rear of the building (there's a reason they don't build 'em this way anymore..), similar to that of the Outhwaite Homes on E. 55th and Community College Dr. There was one grafitti artist who wrote, "Don't go down these dirty paths" --- there were 9 foot fences with groups of men just sitting on the ground behind them like they were stuck in a prison. Not sure how anybody could possibly be living in these conditions anyways. I can't even begin to imagine how this segment of the city became so diminished. This is like the worst of the Cicero or Bronx times two.. I wish I had my camera, but I'm not so sure I'd be willing to start snapping pictures down there anyways. The area I am referring to in this post is: Van Buren, Roxford, and Marbles Rd., all three which are located at the 14300 block of Euclid Avenue in the city of East Cleveland. A quick visit to the city's website would make you think East Cleveland is anything but run down.

General Roads & Highway Discussion (History, etc)
For a highway to work for me, I expect it to get me from point A to point B in quick and safe manner. In Cleveland, the only 2 highways that I personally can say do that for me are: 1) I-480 between I-71 and I-77, where you have 4 lanes in each direction, with the higher traffic areas (State Road and Ridge Road onramps) having a 5th lane added to allow smooth traffic flow. That is one of the busiest highway segments in Cleveland and it's dense with traffic all day long since there is a lot of commercial/industrial/office/residential mixed all throughout. I seem to have the least problems here due to the 4-5 lanes without constant yield's taking place, even though RT. 237, Jennings Freeway (176), and 17 all cross hairs in this area. 2) I-271 local/express lanes between I-480 and I-90 on the east side of Cleveland. Besides the ugly interchange at I-480/I-271/422, this is a very successful highway, as you almost never see traffic delays since there are 2 express lanes all the way through, with 3-5 local lanes at any given time. Modern lighting, sound barriers, limited onramps, exits that do exist are well built and full of development, and the pavement is going to be soon replaced. All this adds up for me. As for I-90 in Euclid, I think the concept of many local exits with marginal roads running the length on both sides of the highway works well. But I am not too enticed to use this portion the right lane or even 2nd to right lane during rush hour, since there is so much yielding taking place.

Cleveland: Park Lane Villa
I am very excited about Park Lane Villa, it's one of the first (of hopefully many) projects on the northside of Chester near the Cleveland Clinic!
