Metro Cleveland: Road & Highway News
OK, so according to the PDF file, I-77 will be widened from 2 to 3 lanes between SR-82 and Pleasant Valley Road. Additionally, from Pleasant Valley Road to Rockside Road, it will be widened from 3 to 4 lanes. With the new I-77 bridge being built over I-480, that would make I-77 a 3-lane continuous freeway from SR-82 in Brecksville to downtown Cleveland (that is, if ODOT also widens the E. 55th St. exit from 2 to 3 lanes as planned). On top of all of this, there is the future widening of I-77 from SR-82 to I-80 (Turnpike), and the widening of I-77 in Summit County near Fairlawn, Bath, Copley, and Akron. Then, I-77 in Stark County near the Akron-Canton airport, is being widened in some places, upto 4 lanes. Eventually, we should see a minimum of 3 lanes non-stop from Canton to Cleveland. The two big development booms as a result of this will be the immediate vicinity of the Akron-Canton Airport and the I-77/SR-82 interchange in Brecksville/Broadview Hts.

Any idea if ODOT will ever widen I-77 from 2 lanes to 3 lanes between Pleasant Valley Road and Bath Township in Summit County? It's a 2 lane stretch for about 15 miles, and to be honest with you, if I-77 didn't have to go from 3 lanes to 2 lanes between Rockside and Pleasant Valley, there wouldn't be a traffic congestion issue every evening. It wouldn't be as difficult since the median and most bridges were setup for future widening/expansion back in the day.. :|

Men's Journal: Cleveland's a Top 50 city
There is another thread about this Mister Good Day, in which my totals were about 3.2. I am guessing that some people believe Cleveland Metropolitan to include only Cleveland-Akron-Lorain (Cuyahoga, Summit, and Lorain Counties, respectively), which is 2.15 million. However, a more appropriate MSA would be the 8 counties, which would also include neighboring Geauga, Lake, and Medina, making it 2.9. I also believe the 381,000 people in Stark County (Canton/Canal Fulton/Massillon) is part of Cleveland Metropolitan. However, the PD author's article broke it down as follows: 1,350,000 - cuyahoga (cleveland) 550,000 - summit (akron) 294,000 - lorain (lorain/elyria) 232,000 - lake (painesville/mentor) 165,000 - medina (medina/brunswick) 154,000 - portage (kent) 94,000 - geauga (aurora) 2.9 million

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
tack another homicide/suicide down for the west side: w. 105 @ lorain. (3/5/06) It was a robber fleeing from the store owner he just robbed at gunpoint. Apparently, the robber was holed up in his apartment hiding out and simply shot himself in the head. i guess that'd be suicide maybe, but it's another fatal death.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
The 27 or so neighborhoods of Cleveland are all neighbored by relatively nice areas. You have Mt. Pleasant and Buckeye-Shaker bordering with Cleveland Hts. and Shaker Hts. You have The Stockyards right next to Brooklyn. Cudell is next to Lakewood. And so forth.. You cross a main intersection and you not only leave the city of Cleveland, but you also leave a primarily vicious neighborhood. I can't stress how much things change between the south and north sides of Denison. You have some of the scariest street scenes here, and then just south it goes from industrial quickly into a very safe living community. The same thing goes for the west and east sides of S. Moreland Blvd. On the Cleveland side is a haven for boarded up drug houses. Just across the street Shaker Hts. begins and suddenly you have mansions from $500,000 on up.. So I guess you can say Cleveland does have some crime problems in *SOME* of its neighborhoods. But most of the time, cross the street and its not a problem anymore. It's a common thing with some big cities but not definately not all of them.

Three Cleveland programs cited as revitalization models
Not to infer any standpoints on this one MGD, but the Cleveland Land Bank in both residential and commercial aspects has reacted poorly to all of my inquiries over the last several months. I have shown so much interest in both ends of their spectrum and they don't return my calls or e-mail me as promised. Instead, I am left hanging dry, now by 3 departments and 6 people, including several of the program's leaders/planners. The furthest I ever get is a committment to be e-mailed. I never get the e-mails and when I try to get info. over the phone, I am told that I will be contacted by e-mail. This problem stretches one step further when the CLB department transfers callers over to Economnic Development instead of getting involved. I can't even access the CLB's database on their website - it's a broken link and the website hasn't been updated in months, if not years. The only thing I can think of is that these guys only want to talk to banks and other "major" players. I thought I was a major player for sure - I told my scenario to the CLB: I want to bring a 45 employee business from the suburbs into the city, in which 35 of the emplyoees currently live in the city of Cleveland, are minority, and leave the city to pay city taxes elsewhere. By bringing (and retaining) a total of 45 employees to the city of Cleveland is EXACTLY what CLB's commercial division and ED stands to accomplish. Our hopes are to acquire either 1) land bank land to develop on, 2) low int. rate SPA's, or 3) restoration tax abatements. Beyond their typical response of, "We'd like to help" on the initial calls, which mind you, took many attempts to get thru in the first place, I've gotten nowhere beyond that. I'd like to hear if anyone has fared better than myself with the CLB program.

Cleveland's Identity Crisis
Us Clevelander's have our own way to shop - everyone knows we got it good at MARC'S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marc's makes the discount/variety shopping in other big cities look like a squandering joke, as nothing compares to Marc's, and I mean NOTHING! I remember whenever I'm in Chicago/NYC trying to find random things in the large variety storees that are spread all over the city that none ever have nearly as good of a selection as Marc's. And pricing.. Marc's sells their stuff for cheaper than the street vendors in Chinatown probably pay to get their stuff in the first place, let alone re-sell it. It's like, "Come to Cleveland if you want a real discount store..." That's an example of something that Cleveland has that other cities don't, and probably never will.

Cleveland's Identity Crisis
the feeling you're in Cleveland, eateries/reastaurant's/bars that define Cleveland in its own ways: Tremont: Prosperity's + Lava Lounge Ohio City: Johnny Mango's Detroit Shoreway/OC: Parkview (i second what blinker12 said) Lakefront: Hornblower's Downtown: Teahouse Noodles (this is Nu-Asian defined and nothing compares!), Rascal House Pizza ('Cleveland greasy pizza' house that plays 60's oldies...)

Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
Am I the only one who realizes that half the people in this thread discussing 'UC' are discussing CSU's UC (University Center) and the other half are discussing UC as in The University Of Columbus ??? Two different places, two different things!!! As for justifying this new garage - it's across the street from the Wolstein Center. A first parking garage for the "Convo Center" is not a bad thing! It's going to take A LOT of the business from the old fashioned pocket lots located up and down Prospect and E. 14. I was doing some work with property owners down there and they displayed a bit of anger since their small 20-30 spot lots will most likely take a turn for the worse (which is a good thing) and will open up even more land for development (that was previously unavailable) - that's all in addition to what others were saying about CSU now having more land to develop. Both CSU and the Quadrangle win in this situation! I couldn't be more satisfied with this project.

Metro Cleveland: Road & Highway News
the re-allignment on the east end makes sense. it dead ends at e. 87 and then begins again at e. 88 and continues to e. 102. if they do re-allign it, bessemer would then run from e. 55 to e. 102. something good happening in the kinsman neighborhood for a change!

Metro Cleveland: Road & Highway News
Does anyone have info. on the Bessemer Road extensions? It's pretty new, not sure when it was built or why. What's the story on this? It seems that the goal was to make the Bessemer Road industrial area more accessible and desirable, as much of that area is rundown and vacant. Well anyways, it runs from E. 65th to E. 55th and runs alongside the railroad tracks. Now Bessemer runs continuously from E. 55 to E. 87th where it ends.

Cleveland: Kingsbury Run
What's everyone's thoughts on this area? Who's familiar with the infamous "Torso Slayer of Kingsbury Run" from the 1930's that Eliot Ness tried to capture but never did? Does anyone know if the murders happened where today's Kingsbury Run parkway exists, or did it happen further down near Woodland? Today, Kingsbury Run is located Between E. 93 and MLK Parkway, parallel to Kinsman (422) and is nothing but suburban styled houses built within in the last 5 years. What used to be here? I believe the area was modified thru time and that a good part of Kingsbury Run was actually destroyed by Eliot Ness. If anyone is not familiar with this historical story, do a google on it.. I asked some family members who were alive when it happened and even they have remember this famous story which happened when most senior citizens were just children. Does anyone know any good websites that offers maybe a detailed history on the incident with pictures/maps? Oh well, I find the whole thing quite interesting even though it happened 80 years ago! ~john

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Hello Jax and welcome to Cleveland! I have been tracking a lot of things in the city of Cleveland for some time.. mainly through customized maps using special map software. I can provide you with maps pinpointing the location of every convicted sex offender in Cuyahoga, Summit, Lorain, and Medina Counties. I have also been working on a public housing/CMHA map. I have a few maps showing stuff such as every homicides in the last 6 months in Cleveland; Minor offenses, rapes, major crimes, and so forth in district 2. I tend to follow the stuff in district 2 more than anywhere else (that area would be the near west side of Cleveland: Clark-Fulton-Denison-Lorain-W25-Storer-W65 to be specific. As for downtown, I'd like to say that where you live is extremely safe and although nowhere in this world is 100% safe, this is about as close as it gets when in the city of Cleveland. I can't say I know about too much crime or police incidents happening near E12 and Euclid beyond a few brushups at your local sports bars on E9-Huron-Prospect in the Gateway District. The only other thing I can think of is the one apartment complex on E14 and Payne, I forget the name of the building, but it has vagrants normally standing around outside and is one of the "trouble" spots in downtown. I guess you could also say the nearby Greyhound Station has its troublemakers hanging around it at night. Otherwise, I believe the Theatre District is very safe, day or night. Once Euclid is re-finished, it will get even better! KJP, Would you be interested in trading data/maps? I am very interested in the info. you that you have been obtaining. I think we have similar hobbies here.. let's share info! :)

that weirdo stat is bugging me. the cities linked above to cleveland are 25 miles away as the crow flies and contigous and those linked to columbus are 50 miles away and seperated by open farmland. i dont care, but if you are gonna include a freakin 50 mile radius for your metro stat then be fair and throw a longer rope out there for cleveland too. sheesh. Hahaha, exactly.. that's an awful MSA if u ask me..

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
"Per capita" means "for size." If Cleveland is more dangerous "per capita" versus Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Akron, Youngstown, and Toledo, then it's the most "dangerous" period. You are more likely to ____ in Cleveland versus the others, overall. That isn't to say that "Cleveland sucks and it's ghetto." It means that the chance of something dangerous in Cleveland is HIGHER in 2005 than other cities in Ohio. It isn't that hard to comprehend. It has NOTHING to do with the "size of Columbus." That's just foolish talk. Per Capita means PER PERSON not FOR SIZE.....................................
-
Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
You're upset that I was showing stats downsizing the imaginary size of Columbus? Now I'm a twit, a penis envy theorist, and "bitchslap".. so I learned my lesson. Don't argue a point with someone who envies their city so much that they will begin using idiotic terminology..
