Amherst: Cleveland Quarries
Couple of questions: 1) Are the quarries man-made? 2) If yes, how did they build them and when were they built? 3) How will the quarries be drained, considering they look VERY DEEP? 4) What exactly will a deep quarry be used for? I would be afraid to swim in it, it looks very deep and scary.. they obviously want to turn it into a beach... BUT HOW??? 5) I am going to be in Elyria and Amherst on 9/16 (TOMORROW!!) and want to know if I can access the other quarries without trespassing. If so, how do I get to them... I know where Quarry Road is and I have seen the BIG quarry from the spectator site.. ya know where there is a gravel pull-off area across the street. thx!

Amherst: Cleveland Quarries
I was in Lorain today so I spent most of the day driving around exploring it in detail for the first time. I had been there many times only briefly. I also had the chance to drive thru Amherst today as well, and yes indeed, this is quite a developed city. The downtown seems very bizarre with a V-shaped setup of 2 streets going outward from a center point. I didn't see downtown other than drive past it. I did notice a hell of a lot of subdivisions, especially upscale and luxury houses. So yes, I do agree that Amherst is very developed while Amherst Township is not. I could swear there is one other Amherst, something like Amherst Village.. maybe I am mistaken. Oh, and I also was at the new Cleveland Clinic on the edges of Lorain-Amherst, it is quite big and looks like it has led to the spurring of spin-off development right next to it. I also noticed that Amherst's main retail district (entirely different than than the historical downtown area) looks to have been fully completed between 5-10 years ago, as the roads are now 5 lanes and there is fairly new shopping plaza's throughout. Do you live in Amherst Steele05? If so, I would love to ask some additional questions, as this was my very first time in the area other than brief trips to Elyria and Lorain. I am quite intrigued by the Quarries, and by some of those tall radio towers in the middle of nowhere.. they seemed pretty interesting and something that is uncommon in Cleveland (where I'm at). Thanks again for keeping this thread alive!!

Amherst: Cleveland Quarries
I finally saw the Quarries today! And all I can say is HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so ecstatic after seeing it in person. First and foremost, I wasn't planning on being in Amherst, so I forgot my camera. But I stood exactly where Steele05 told me to stand, and DAMN was the view awesome. I just stood on the main road and stared at the quarry for quite some time. I can't believe how big and DEEP it is. Unfortunately, much of the land where the Cleveland Quarries project is at, is private property. I would love to return and explore the area in detail without trespassing. Quarry Road however, does have the perfect view of the Quarry from the road itself. You would need to park your car across the street and then you can stand up close and view. A couple things I noticed were tons of ABSOLUTELY NO TRESPASSING SIGNS, especially near the old abandoned factories/barns/warehouses near the quarries. Second, as I stood directly on top of the quarry, I got a little scared, as a fall would either result in death or drowning.. this is quite a ravine if you ask me (at least more than anything I've ever seen!) I definately have to return to this area to see it again (and again, etc...). The way this Amherst Township looks now, especially near the quarries - I don't know how the hell they are going to be able to transform it into high rise hotels and beaches and so forth. Right now, it's country roads and extremely large farms/fields with little to no retail in the city. I was so freaked out by the quarry (the big one that is and the only one I could find) that I couldn't begin to picture all the woods/fields/farms as a future development area. Maybe the golf course, but it is going to be quite a freaking conversion of land and development. I am so excited about this project, as we will all witness a truly historical project come to fruition. In continuing the assets this will provide for Cleveland and NE Ohio in general: 1) I guarantee that I-90/SR-2 will be widened/re-paved very soon. Currently 2 lanes each direction, horrible bumps and potholes, no median, no highrail lights, etc.. 2) Connection of Lorain County to Cuyahoga County - development will ensue in the area between Crocker Park and the cities of Elyria and Lorain. 3) Hopkins will see a huge increase in # of people using the airport. Probably enough to expand even more. Or, Lorain County Airport will have to expand to a national airport. 4) Eventually will allow NE Ohio to include Cleveland-Akron-Canton-Lorain-Elyria-Mentor-AMHERST-SANDUSKY. In 10 years time, we may see our regional population jump with the people jamming the surrounding areas of Amherst, and with a connection of Sandusky and their 50,000+ people. 5) Oberlin will no longer be a college in the middle of nowhere.. it will be closer to Cleveland because Amherst will be in the spotlight and Oberlin is very close to Amherst. Oberlin is one of the best liberal arts schools in the world.

Amherst: Cleveland Quarries
I'm very excited about all of this. I have been to Amherst only one time, and it was before I heard about all of this. I would love to go back there before winter starts and try to get some pictures of the quarries and proposed site. 2 questions to those who live nearby and have been to the site: 1) How do I reach the site from I-80? What exit #, what back roads do I take, etc.? 2) I am assuming the land is private property or is not open for anyone to walk about on, so are there any nearby vantage points to see the quarries? Thanks for ongoing coverage Steele!! Keep it up!!

Cleveland: Office Max News & Info
Well, KJP, I'm with you, and I am verrrrrryyyy pissed off that Cleveland took this sort of loss.. I kinda had some high hopes for seeing new faces downtown. But, it's time for me to turn my cheek and look at how lousy the company is actually doing. I don't think the company has a bright future, at least not from the stores I have been inside. I was inside the Parmatown location today and a) the parking lot was empty and I was the only customer in the store at 3pm; b) everything is overpriced and undesirable when places like Staples, Wal-Mart, and Target offer it for 9 times out of 10, much cheaper; and c) the only reason I even went to Office Max was because I got a coupon in the mail for 10 dollars off a purchase of 10 dollars or more, meaning I got a 50 pack of CDR's for free - why else would they send me and my girlfriend these coupons at least 4 times a year if they weren't in desperate need of customers? My girlfriend is the one who said that they are pathetic sending us these coupons and she hasn't the faintest about the company's financials or consolidation process. The truth of it is, with Wal-Mart and Target slowly becoming colossal monopolists in society, they will continue to lower their prices (the more they sell, the cheaper they sell it for). And places like Staples are popping up everywhere.. when I go inside a Staples store, I feel like I am in Office Max, still a fairly shitty place, but they are doing something different, because their stores usually consist of at least as many customers as employees at any given time, whereas Office Max usually has 1-2 people in the store with 10+ employees standing around doing little or nothing at all. With Internet shopping becoming easier than ever, not only through mature competition, but also through high speed Internet access, the entire process of online shopping has become so damn simple that places like Office Max and K-Mart won't last much longer. I wouldn't be surprised if all the big box stores say that their websites account for more sales than their brick and mortar stores do. So, with that said, maybe Office Max is consolidating to one location because the future is bleak at best. The company has definately had its up's and down's, but this is by far the biggest down, and that's not just from a pissed off Clevelander's standpoint. I recall at least 3-4 years ago when I was very skeptical of the company when some friends discussed buying OMX shares. I can't recall the story with Office Max at the time, but I could swear they almost went under at least once in the new millenium already. So, in the end, I do feel it's a big loss for Cleveland, but then again, if and when they do go under it really won't matter anyways.. If MBNA, Progressive or Marc Glassman Inc. (which is definately a NE Ohio company on the up and about) went under then I'd be concerned, but Office Max??? **** 'em!

Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant
I tried to get near the site, but it's not possible. There's the option of first trespassing on someone's property to climb over the fencing and then once inside, trespassing again on the Ravenna Ordnance Plant - a double trespassing conviction, ouch! Plus, who knows what kind of cameras or security the site has, even if you get in, who knows what happens next.. I drove around the south and east sides of the site, but it's set way back behind private property (houses, trailer homes, and farm land). I did find a fairly large trailer park which bordered the ROP, but the back of the trailer park was blocked by barbed wire fencing and then more woods/forest was behind, completely blocking even a glimpse of what the damn ROP looks like. Anyone with better luck than me, I'd love to hear from you!!

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
From the looks of Mayday's new picture (as completed), I personally think it looks AWESOME!!! I never thought I could admire a parking garage, but I definately like it a lot.. as a matter of fact, it puts all the other parking garages in the Financial District to utter shame - just walk down E. 6th and turn down Vincent to see an ugly and even an uglier garage behind Fifth 3rd and McDonald Investment buildings, respectively. Not only that, but the others are no more 2-3 levels, and they offer no retail on the ground levels, nothing except big ugly garages taking up valuable space. Like I said in the past, I hope the new garage at 515 Euclid takes all these garages business away, then they will tear down and re-build with retail implemented, as well as possible office/hotel space on top.. Sure that's a long shot, but it definately could happen within the next few years!
-
Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
Additionally, I have read from an independent source that 515 Euclid Avenue could reach 28+ stories once demand is met to build a condo tower above the garage. Up until I heard '28+ stories', I had read that it would be somewhere around 20 stories. I wonder if that 20-28 stories is in addition to the 9 story garage.. if so, that could become quite a tall skyscraper. The other interesting aspect that nobody has mentioned is that if they do move forward to create a condo tower one day at 515 Euclid, it would be quite unique in the downtown skyline.. why? Because almost every high rise apartment/condo in downtown follows a wide length, unlengthy height format (e.g. Reserve Square, Pinnacle, and Stone Bridge) whereas 515 Euclid is in a very tight corner spot, meaning that it will be a very skinny and tall building if completed, similar to those of Chicago and NYC where it is physically impossible to build something like a Pinnacle nowadays in those cities. While 515 Euclid's garage does stretch behind East 6th next to the Arcade, I would highly doubt that the tower would occupy that portion of the space since it would offer little to no views due to constraints on all sides. If Euclid Avenue's new RTA project works out well and if Euclid does get some more retail and development near E. 4th-E. 6th, I will continue to stay dedicated to making that area my future home.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
515 Euclid parking garage is now open! They are still working on the ground-level retail, but the garage is definately open.. I rode my bike past it on August 9th, and it is a very slick facility, reminds me of Central Parking NYC quality.. -John PS - I believe the garage is owned/operated by Ampco parking. I would say that it's the nicest parking garage in Cleveland, next to the indoor/heated garage at Penton Media Building.

Cleveland: Ontario Pointe Office Building
I think the land parcel is a perfect spot for what they are trying to use it for. If this project is completed, I can see a lot of techie businesses leasing office space in the building, just because its "high tech".. I also heard that an Ikea was possible near this location, perhaps the side further away from downtown..

Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant
Hello, lately I have been pondering what the Ravenna Ordnance Plant is all about. I have not been able to find anyone in person who knows much about it and there doesn't seem to be a website discussing it. But basically, it is a gigantic area on the outskirts of Ravenna that is set behind main roads and not accessible by anyone (as far as I know). It is surrounded by barbed wire and is practically as big as an entire city. The only thing I know about the R.O.P. is that it was used as a weapons manufacturing facility, maybe during WW2 by the US government. I also heard that there is some form of toxic waste buried there. I drove all the way out there a while back and couldn't even see an entrance or a view from the ouside since it is set way back behind woods on all 4 sides. If anyone has a full history of the R.O.P., pictures, inside stories, know if it's at all accessible.. Basicaly if anyone can offer some insight about the place, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! -John

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I haven't been through the entire state, but I would say that Elyria and parts of Lorain may be worse per capita in my opinion. I don't like calling Cleveland a bad city - only parts of the city have problems. Downtown, Tremont, Fairfax, University Circle, and Ohio City are NOT bad areas. However, anything north of University Circle and east of Rockefeller Park is fair game for a very rough area, all the way into East Cleveland. Same thing between E. 79th and E. 105th all along Quincy and Woodland. Most of the CMHA along E. 55th is ridden with crime. As for the west side of Cleveland, I would have to say that the most crime is centered around Scranton and Clark.

Cleveland: Why the modern mansions on Chester between E. 70th-90th?
I have tried to unravel the story behind this. I have heard a lot of different ones, but I would like to know the truth behind why there are a series of modern mansions or luxury homes along Chester Avenue between about E. 70th thru E. 90th St. You have beautiful new homes all along Chester, but you have torn apart drug houses and unlivable homes just a few houses down the streets. I like the idea, but I wish I knew how it happened, who started it and where it is headed!! I have heard two explanations for the houses: 1) Wealthy people who want to live near the Cleveland Clinic 2) Wealthy gay people creating their own well-to-do area So, are either true, and if not, what's the scoop!!!!!!????

Cleveland Eateries: A Where To Guide for Visitors and Residents
Sorry about the alignment, can't fix it.. I would have to say that the list is pretty accurate and includes health food stores, restaurants, delis, juice bars, and anything else vegetarian friendly. A few places are vegetarian only AND delicious, such as: - American Harvest in Middleburgh Heights (100% vegan counter deli) - Another Level 2 in East Cleveland (100% vegan/vegetarian) - newer place that rivals that of Soul Vegetarian - Just Natural - a health food/diner in Willoughby, I know 100% vegetarian, maybe all vegan even. - Cafe Limbo (larchmere) (100% vegetarian) - very cool place that also serves alcohol - Munch! (CWRU campus - not 100% but almost - 95% vegetarian, 1 chicken item) - Schtick's Vegetarian Kitchen (CWRU campus - 95% vegetarian, 1 chicken item) - Teahouse Noodles on E. 6th (95% vegetarian, have chicken as an option and all other is veg.) - my favorite place ever - Udupi Cafe - 100% vegetarian in Parma Heights - I never been here though - Web Of Life in Westlake (vegan only) - they have a diner area now and it is some of the best food for a vegan in all of Cleveland That makes 9 totally or almost completely vegetarian places.. pretty cool considering 2-3 of those are brand new (e.g. Another Level II, Web Of Life's new menu/new eat in area, and Munch! at CWRU all NEW!!!!!!!!!! and Cafe Limbo is very new too!!!!!!) As for vegetarian and vegetarian friendly, Tommy's, Johnny Mangos (both locations), Wild Oats, Mustard Seed and most places in Oberlin do the job.. And Chipotle, which is great for vegetarians and vegans, very clean place and they are in University Heights on Cedar, Cleveland Heights on Coventry, Parma on Ridgewood, North Olmsted at Brookpark in GN Mall, Willoughby by SR2, Indendence at Rockside, and Fairlawn on RT 18, maybe a few in Canton and Cuy. Falls as well) - best corporate veggy eats IMO. Sbarro's, in most malls is heavily vegetarian, more vegetarian than not. Plus, you have places that are not geared for veg's, but have a good selection such as PF Changs, Stir Crazy, and Mongolian BBQ - welcome to the east side :)

I was so surprise to see this topic talk about vegetarian and vegan places. I guess I can put my list of all the vegetarian and vegan places in Cleveland and outlying areas to use FINALLY!!!! Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
So, here is a tally of ongoing bix box projects in Cleveland and outlying areas: -Steelyard Commons including Wal-Mart and several others. -West 117 at I-90 anchored by Target and Giant Eagle. -North Olmsted at Brookpark Road, building a Target from scratch, not a renovation -Garfield Heights Valley View Center with Circuit City, Giant Eagle, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dick's, ETC. In addition to the fairly new corporate sludge in Aurora across the street from Six Flags In addition to the new Wal-Mart and Dick's at Parmatown In addition to the new Dick's at North Olmsted In addition the recent Phase 3 of Ridge Park Square (Circuit City, Marc's, Lowe's) In addition to the new Giant Eagle at Pleasant Valley/Broadview In addition to the entire corporate mess in Macedonia at Northfield (Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, Giant Eagle, etc.) In addition to the new Giant Eagle and friends in Brunswick near Pearl Road I could go on, you get the idea.. Plus, you have Legacy Village, Crocker Park, and related projects along Chagrin Blvd. in Woodmere: same concept, higher quality, still big box for the most part (e.g. Gander Mountain and Crate + Barrel are no different than Wal-Mart) I'm not for or against W. 117th and I-90's project, but I do favor fixing up problem areas (e.g. Parmatown) rather than the idea of North Olmsted to continue to chop down whatever is left and build more (e.g. Target on Brookpark, next to Metroparks). I would say that the project at W. 117 and I-90 will do more better than bad. However, places like Wolstein's project in Aurora and the cluster of shit at Route 8 and Route 82 is pretty sick however.. they cut down tons of woods to build those projects. Macedonia at Route 8 is only about 5-10 minutes from Howe Avenue in Cuyahoga Falls, which is just more Best Buy, Giant Eagle, Target, etc. And that's about 10 minutes from Route 18 in Fairlawn which is the epitomy of Akron's big box stuff. This shit never ends...

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
I was hanging out on West 9th yesterday because my friend does valet parking for a few places. I was there for a few hours and I happened to walk from East 14th and it was 90 degrees outside, so when I got there, I was finding myself quite exhausted. I ended up sitting on dirty ledges in front of the Hart Condominiums at the Hart Building (since the only other place to sit was on the ground or a dirty garbage can). I kept saying, "Damn, I love sitting here watching the action from the street level, but I wish I had a place to sit!" And now from these renderings, I am very happy.. I can already see myself sitting at the pocket park at West 9 and St. Claire on a weekday night for several hours.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
Wasn't the NBC news video depicting the new project at Westgate Mall??? Beyond that, I am all for the project, but I kinda lost a bit of excitement when I read the 4-story part.. It'd great to see another mega scraper next to Erieview but I do think some construction and small projects far outweigh no construction and ugly parking lots.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I just keep envisioning the area between PD and Erieview.. that area is going to expand very quick if this new E. 12th mega project succeeds. Why? Because there is so much undeveloped land and anything that is developed currently is in poor shape and has very low property value. There is no way people are gonna keep moving downtown to WHD and developers turn their heads to the potential of this area. I seriously have very high hopes as of right now!

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I really like E. 12th but I have always been disheartened by the fact that downtown literally ends right there. With the Tower At Erieview and One Cleveland Center right there, you got nothing but surface lots beyond that to the east. Now this project definately will expand the outer limits in that direction, pushing outwards towards CSU/PD/Artists Row/Etc. If this project has 'art' in mind, I definately think they have a plan in place, because that is where I would also choose to build it up at.. especially with all of the studio's along Superior around E. 20th to E. 30th. Its about time that artsy people have an area to call their own in downtown.. Coventry and Univ. Circle watch out!!!!!!!!! Buildings don't have to be 100 years old and falling apart to attract artsy people. I think if this area develops in the right way, it will easily be #1 on my list of places for myself to move someday - right now I still like the lofts along Euclid most.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Wed. May 18 Plain Dealer has a huge article with small diagrams regarding this. Not sure if it builds/borrows from the Crane's article, but it is very similar. Additionally, today's PD also discusses Steelyard Commons back in effect with Wal-Mart and also has an article regarding the AT Tower site being chosen. Lots of stuff to read and save in today's edition for sure! Metro section also discusses support for the new Wolstein project in the flats. This is crazy - a lot of shit is being announced/planned in Cleveland all at once (I haven't seen this in how long???)

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Yep, that area has so much in store for it, with the new Zaremba project and the restoration of CSU and PD's new building will all help bring things together. In regards to Midtown - that district/area does not begin until roughly E. 30th. I don't know it's diameter, but it is bordered by Chinatown on the north, CSU on the west, Prospect Historic District/heavy public housing on the south, and Cleveland Clinic/Fairfax on the east. CSU, PD, and Zaremba's project all fall within the Civic Center/CSU area which most likely will become fully re-developed simultaneously with Midtown.

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
Anyone ever imagine what midtown would look like if it was as successful as Lakewood and downtown were with housing in the 60's? Think of what that area would look like if Willson Tower (E. 55th/Chester) wasn't the only high-rise in midtown! I hate seeing that tall building with shitty, ugly, falling apart buildings on all sides of it. Maybe in 200 years when our midtown is nothing but skyscrapers, people will look at that historic registry at Wilson Tower and say, "The guys who developed this building had a vision for midtown, but unfortunately no one else saw it their way for a 100 years!" Really though.. :-D Why is Wilson Tower where it is? When the building was built, that area was no better than it is today.. what caused that to be built right there? I don't like the area especially, and I do think it is quite a rough area, but I would just love to have a top floor room in that place, with views of Cleveland in all directions, I'd love it 24/7!!!!!! Out of curiosity, anyone know anything about the building such as reason for building it right there? If CMHA owns it, wouldn't they opt to build low-rise housing vs. the more expensive high-rise? Built 1971 ... 21 stories ... owned by CMHA.
