Cincinnati: Evolution and Changing Perceptions of Urban Neighborhoods
About the changing perceptions of OTR: what I think we're seeing are the seeds of changing perceptions. Once the Washington Park area really comes online in the next couple years and redevelopment along Liberty and between Main and Vine fills in - then, and only then, will there be a seachange in perception. This is all predicated on the continued decrease in crime too. Until then, all positive development will be dogged by lingering "concerns about crime in that area" as expertly exhibited by Local 12's Cammy Dierking in this news clip about City Home selling out (toward the end with 50 seconds left in the clip): http://www.local12.com/news/local/story/New-Townhouses-in-OTR-Are-Sold-Out-Before-Finished/EegvpyPlyEaxmkiCsh2oPA.cspx

Thank you for scanning these! I have her "Cincinnati: City of Seven Hills" but am afraid to scan them for fear of breaking the spine. I just used one of your scans in this post about Spring In Our Steps alley cleanup this Saturday 9a-3p: http://overtherhine.wordpress.com/2012/03/22/spring-in-our-steps-cleanup-iii-peete-alley-at-vine-street/

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine Tour of Living
Couldn't agree more. The staged shots are impressive and important. Oh, how I wish more real estate people understood the importance of good photography! Fantastic shots as usual.

Cincinnati: Evolution and Changing Perceptions of Urban Neighborhoods
OTR is far from wholly revitalized. Is anyone saying otherwise? The point is perceptions are changing because reality is changing. What is significant is that people who do not "take a blind eye in the spirit of optimism" are seeing that OTR's revitalization is real. It is slow but all real progress is.

Has the Enquirer covered it yet?
-
Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
Doubly agreed. Has the Enquirer even covered the decrease in crime yet? I guarantee most of its readers would assume someone has been killed in OTR in the last 6 months...but I guess OTR being safer isn't part of the narrative.

Over the Rhine is getting safer By Ann Thompson 3/19/2012 3:20:25 PM Cincinnati police are seeing a dramatic drop in homicides in Over the Rhine. Today the Chief listed possible reasons and described what police are doing next. In a media news briefing Chief James Craig reported a 100-percent drop in Over the Rhine murders. He says nobody has been killed there since September. Since then Craig has put more officers in the field, worked with neighborhood groups, targeted the most violent offenders and took them off the streets, and has involved the department in youth mentoring. He's confident the decline in Over the Rhine crime will continue, and cites a 40-percent drop in murders citywide. http://www.wvxu.org/news/wvxunews_article.asp?ID=9877

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26954.msg603380.html#msg603380 ...and the Enquirer probably won't cover it. I tweeted it to Carolyn Washburn this afternoon just in case she missed it.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
At 8:20 in the video above you can see a rendering of the Main Street side of the Moerlein Lager House - it includes street trees and what appears to be signage that is being installed now: Signage for that wall is beginning to go up. I'd expect there to be lighting too.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
I just had a thought, in spring 2014 you could do a really cool one-day outdoor music festival with acts at Findlay Market (parking lot, farmers shed, or south of the market), Washington Park, Fountain Square, Smale Event Lawn, with the streetcar connecting all of the venues. You could even get four singer-songwriter/acoustic acts to play on the actual streetcars. (Also I suppose you could throw another act in a parking lot on/near Central Parkway) As long as it doesn't rain. Can't rain that day. Great idea...only 2 years away.
