CLEVELAND - Fall Color in the City
This made my morning. Thank you. Really wonderful photos. The Harkness tombstone reminds me of the Harkness family who were Standard Oil tycoons - the family name is best known in some circles for the contribution of the Harkness table teaching method.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
I was wondering about that... I saw that the building was still for sale about 2-3 weeks ago. Do you know if the building sold, or if the owner decided to take it off the market and/or lease the retail space out regardless? I've talked to the property owner/developer as well as one of the bar owners. The building sold on September 10 and the buyer is a developer who is handling the project and leasing out the bar space - as well as the three 2bd/2br units in the upper floors.

fwiw 'rhinehaus' will be all one word and lowercase. the owner (jim daffin) is the developer and has plans and drawings ready and will be working with pater architectural restoration to redo the storefront in an historically correct manner. all the windows will also be replaced with a replicated design. the guys doing the bar are opening up the space a bit. kinda fun that rhinehaus and Rhino's are homophones.

Moving back to Cincinnati
Welcome back to Cincinnati. I'll let you know if I find anything that suits your situation. Have you considered looking for a unit through OTRCH? I know several UC students/recent grads who live in OTRCH units. They have drywall instead of brick and sometimes laminate in place of hardwood, but monthly rent is less than half your requested $700...with views of Washington Park to boot. http://www.otrch.org/residents/apply.html

Cincinnati: Downtown: 84.51°
This is all I all know, as stated above: I only came to this thread because someone directed me to it and said it was "pretty entertaining" and "completely not true." I never indicated that I knew "so much about this project" other than WH won't be in it. I'm sure several people reading and perhaps even posting in this thread know more about 5th/Race than me. Maybe I killed all the fun by ending the speculation about WH :| Hopefully the renderings will be out soon...

I merely said Whole Foods isn't happening at 5th and Race. It wasn't personal to anyone in this thread or any particular grocery chain. I do not work for Kroger. I skim comments in these threads and didn't expect anyone to take offense by me sharing information that I know to be true. I didn't mean to make it sound like "Any idiot knows Whole Foods would never go in at 5th and Race"...because I don't know or even care about the economics of urban groceries.

The landscaping will be true to the original design as well.

Sorry if my reply came off as brash. That was not my intent. Whole Foods is not happening though and that is not speculation. You'll just have to take my word for it.

Whole Foods is not going to be at 5th and Race. That is not speculation. That is a fact. I'm trying to save everyone some time and needless speculation.

Cincinnati: Downtown: 84.51°
Just to end the speculation: Whole Foods isn't happening. One reason is because dunnhumby is 50% owned by Kroger.

Cincinnati City Council
Wards lead to division and distractions which invariable benefit opportunists. They can increase citizen pressure on invididual councilmen though. It's hard to judge a ward system in Cincinnati without seeing a ward map.

Cincinnati Enquirer
^good point. The only consequence of the paywall for me is I visit cincinnati.com far less and rarely click on links to it even though I know I'll never hit the paywall. It seems the Enquirer is banking on people paying for their paper simply because they always have. Without a change in strategy and emphasis on real journalism - the paper will die. They also should have some sort of statement of principles.

Cincinnati: Pendleton: Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati
Not a game changer but on the microlevel if only a couple percent choose to live nearby in OTR/Pendleton then that would be a healthy contribution to the neighborhood.
-
Cincinnati: Pendleton: Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati
The casino's power resides in its power to attract development to neighboring lots. The benefit to Pendleton would be an increased demand for housing near a major employer. I'm skeptical too but some landlords in Pendleton are offering their apartments at a market-rate for the first time and getting it. This invariably makes the neighborhood more viable. Coupled with the other projects in the neighborhood, casino employees opting for a convenient place to live close to their work could play a major role in the Pendleton's budding transformation. JYP is right to say a minority of visitors will make a day of visiting downtown and as it stands right now the impact will probably be insignificant beyond the borders of the Horseshoe development --- but the potential exists that the casino will attract risk-takers to invest in some of the empty lots/buildings in Pendleton. Overall though the casino replaced an empty lot and will attract a lot of people. The vast majority will gamble and leave but some will hang around and become more familiar with downtown Cincinnati. The real challenge is going to be marketing the nearby attractions to visitors - so one-time gamblers or wedding parties or whatever are converted into repeat visitors to the core --- to see a show, try a restaurant, attend an event, etc.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Dayton has electric buses with similar catenary wires as the streetcar. In Dayton, they do not affect local radio and rarely cause some static with very weak AM signals. This, like every other sensational objection to the streetcar, is easily refuted by comparison to other cities. It's remarkable how opponents to the streetcar system treat it as if it's the first one ever attempted. It's laughable.
