PRidgeFlyer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionHere's a map of Columbia Township's various outposts around the greater Cincinnati area. http://www.columbiatownship.org/township%20maps.htm I'm also pretty sure their municipal building is not even in the township limits, but in Kenwood.

Covington: Carnegie Center restoration
I went to the first event in the newly renovated Otto M Budding theater in the Carnegie Center last night. It was the touring company of Chicago's Second City improv group - which I might add was hilarious! Before the show, the Theater Director came on stage and presented a short version of a documentary he and friend had been working on chronicling the history of the Carnegie building. It's really fascinating to see the state that the building was in for years because it is in magnificent shape today. The last time I had been in the theater, about two years ago, it had plaster being ripped out and was a mess in general. It was apparent how much hard work has gone on since that time because it has been completely restored to its full glory. For anyone who has never been, they are hosting an open house with free admission tomorrow, Sun 26th. You should go and check it out.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
PRidgeFlyer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionI agree with XUMel in relation to the Ridge-Highland corridor, which is Columbia Township's main business district. I think they need to put money behind traffic and streetscape improvements before they worry about branding. Right now they can come up with a $45k logo and but they'll still be marketing the same horrendous area.

Bored in Cincinnati?
Actually as a Dayton grad with several family members still attending school there, I can tell you this is pretty far from what actually goes on. The quintessential feature of social life at UD has always been and continues to be the the highly residential nature of the campus, specifically the "South Student Neighborhood" (as the PC school administrators like to call it today) AKA "The Ghetto", where almost all of the student housing is. It's both a good and a bad thing. It's great because almost everyone who goes there lives lives in such close proximity to one another. That many college students in such a small area is a lot of fun and it creates a strong sense of community. However, the downside is that the majority of student rarely leave the campus or the surrounding Brown St area. Most of the partying at UD goes on in the Ghetto and the Brown St bars. When I went to UD, I worked downtown and went to bars downtown & in the Oregon District, but I was in the definite minority on that one. Most people did not want to leave campus or drive around when they were going to bars or anything else. I know for a fact that there were people who never stepped foot downtown in four years there and it's two miles from campus. You're correct about Brown St. not being nearly as built up with stores and bars and restaurants as you see at near other colleges, but keep in mind that OSU (55K) UC (34K), & OU (24K) all have at least 17,000 more student than UD does. Compared to XU's surrounding area - with almost the same enrollment as Dayton - Brown St looks pretty happening. UD's administration also does not want any more bars open in that area and they Carry a lot of weight with the city. There are about seven bars in close proximity of campus and a few others have been closed to make room for new developments. So considering that the majority of of the 7K undergrad students are not of legal age, which makes it easier to the state liquor control to keep tabs on, it's not surprising there aren't more bars. As far as UD being expensive, well...it is and much more so now. A party school...it is defiantly that too, although I'm told is is significantly stricter than when I went there (and believe me I've partied at OSU, OU, WVU many times and UD definately earned it's reputation as party school). However as far as UD being "uppity" I never got that vibe and I was definitely not a rich kid. UD was such a fun school because parties were always open to everyone and living in the ghetto everyone was your neighbor. Even as a freshman you never paid money to drink at someones party - because it was always assumed you'd do the same when you got a house someday. That sense of openness and an extreme sense of pride about drinking the cheapest domestic you can buy (Beast Light) don't really add up for me to being uppity. Everyone at UD always thought that Miami people were a little snobby (and having dated, worked with, and I'm friends with many Miami students/alumni I still haven't changed my opinion on that one :-D ). As far as where WSU student go I have no idea. I know that they sometimes came down to UD bars, but I don't think there is really much around WSU in the way of campus bars.

Norwood budget deficit woes
Fortunately, enterprising Norwood city council members are coming up with thier own creative solutions for the city's buget woes  Norwood councilman arraigned for theft BY WILLIAM WEATHERS | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER DOWNTOWN – Norwood Councilman Will DeLuca appeared for arraignment on a felony theft charge this morning in Hamilton County Municipal Court, and the case was continued until March 15 at 9 a.m. DeLuca declined to discuss the theft charge before or after his brief court appearance. “I can’t comment,” he said. Cincinnati: Jungle Jim's
Unfortunately it is not! I was confused. It's going to be Fresh Market - not Whole Foods Market. http://www.freshmarket.com/pages/store_locationsDetail.aspx?StoreId=60 It is going in where Jones' the Florist was (formerly IGA) on Madison Rd .

Cincinnati: Jungle Jim's
The Oakley location will be part of the Millworks development and much smaller (square footage wise) than the parent location in Fairfield. As for Meijer and Sam's Club, Jungle Jim's will be going for a different market than the weekly "milk & bread" or bulk item grocery shopper so I don't think it would impact them too much. There is however a Fresh Market is opening in Oakley that will be less than a mile from Wild Oats so there will be more competition for the higher end specialty grocery market share in the area.

PRidgeFlyer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionAmen to that. I will be glad when they get their own signage so that people don't think of it as Pleasant Ridge. The Ridge-Highland Corridor is a huge eyesore and a traffic nightmare. I want to kill people making left turns everytime I drive thru there. Anything they do to that area will be an improvement.

Goat on a trampoline
The family's appeal has been in the news lately, but when they discuss the story they aren't running that photo with it. And that to me, is the real injustice.

Cincinnati: Evanston: Development and News
Sorry if there is already a thread on this - but I don't know what this is called so I wasn't sure how to search for it. Does anyone know what is going on in Evanston - I believe just south of Dana Ave on the west side of 71. There is a cluster of homes that I believe are located on a disconnected portion of old Duck Creek Rd that had been broarded up for a while. Yesterday while driving home I notified that a number of them had been torn down and it looks like there were still some more that would be demo'ed soon. Anyone know what's going on there? :?

Wheeling (Part I): Downtown
You are correct the Kaufman's store you see in the picture is a local bridal / gown store. I was friends with the family that owned it growing up. However, there is still a Kaufmann's at the mall about 8 miles from downtown.

WOW - a strip mall & big box??? How underwhelming. What a crap project.- Welcome to Poland - Gdańsk
Great pics! I spent a semester studying at the Insitute of International Relations at Warsaw Univerisity. If I would have seen your pics before, I would have made sure that I took a trip up to visit Gdansk :-D. Unfortunately so much of Warsaw was destroyed in the war and everything that was built afterwards all looks fairly modern today - other than the small Old Town section which was rebuilt to look like it originally did. I did get to spend some time in Krakow which still has all of its original builiding is was one of my favorite cities in Europe. A lot of the bulidings there look similar to the ones in Gdansk.- Taxi Service in Cincinnati
You guys have had better luck than I have. I think the cab service in Cincinnati is the worst I have experienced in any city of similar size. I can't count how many times in the six or seven years I have lived here that we have called a cab or multiple cabs that have just failed to show up or only sent one when we requested three. It also doesn't matter what company we call, it still happens. Similarly I have had bad luck around bar areas waiting for cabs to show up - and if you leave anywhere near closing time, forget it. There are times when there are 10 minute gaps between cabs going down St. Gregory St when bars let out in Mt. Adams. I understand that it's a very busy time, but most other places I go the cabbies seem to account for this and get more cabs to the bar areas. I think that mainly there just aren't as many cab companies in town are there are in other cities. Cincinnati Kid is right though. If you know you're going to use one frequently, find one you like and get their number. I had people in town for 5 weeks on business that used the same guy all the time. He definately made them a priority pick up and he would even call them sometimes before it got busy to see if/when they were going to need him so he could plan a fare around heading in their direction.- Cincinnati: Hyde Park - Michigan Terrace
Amen to that!- Cincinnati: Hyde Park - Michigan Terrace
While I agree that it beats the gas station that previously graced that corner, I had not been in the area in a while and I when I drove through the square the other day I was a bit overwhelmed at how big imposing that building is on the square as a whole. Not a bad looking building, but it really sticks out iin comparison with the rest of the buildings on the square.- Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
PRidgeFlyer replied to New Orleans Lady's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI have to put my vote in for the Nugget. Hopefully the S Dixie location gets up and running again. That was my fav breakfast place when I lived in Dayton and I've yet to find one I like more.- Covington: Carnegie Center restoration
I went to a fundraising party at the Carnegie that a friend was helping to put on about a year ago. What an awesome building! It is a gem and I'm glad that they are finishing up the restoration. They were still working on the theater when I was there but you could tell that it would be incredible once completed. I have to say I don't spend too much time in art galleries, but they also had some really cool exhibitions from local artists and what a great space to display them in. More people need to check this place out.- Cincinnati: Oakley: Oakley Station
as a pleasant ridge resident, im happy its close by but not in my backyard. the proposed kennedy connector should take traffic away from Ridge and off my street as well. As a Pleasat Ridge resident I feel the same way; glad it's close but not too close and I hope that the KC will reduce some congestion on Ridge. I also hope that if this area become really hot, there will be some spinoff investment into the Ridge/Highland corridor. - Cincinnati: Madisonville: Development and News
