Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
Aquariums have to care for hundreds of sea animals.... quite a task. It costs $1000s/hour to run the Experimental Hatchery at the University of Miami, and it's a fraction of the size and only grows sea hares. The machinery that goes into these aquariums is more advanced than anything at the Zoo/Rock Hall/Science Center. It also takes very specialized workers (research/science divers, marine biologists, specialized vets) and lots and lots of expensive food. $22 isn't that bad of a price, compare it to an $11 movie (I would say it's worth at least twice that). Also, Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut is $29 and I think the size is comparable.

Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
I'm quite sad that they tabled the 450,000 sq. ft. I know it would be pointless now, but I was hoping the future build idea like at 515 would happen. It's a shame for something in the center of the city to only be as tall as the Rockefeller building. Other than that.... I think this is awesome! Opens up RTA HQ in the warehouse district, makes the district almost the center transportation hub in the region, adds more retail and housing.... and possibly makes it easier to close down Ontario and Superior for the redesigned Public Square. Winning all around!!!

Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
If anybody remembers my post in the redesigning public square thread about a bus transit center there with GCRTA HQ on top and private development on top of that.... This is what I was hinting at :). Just wasn't sure if I was supposed to talk about it.

^I think the second picture would be just as visually stunning if there were some awesome looking ships loading/unloading at the port next to a brand new ferry seaport.

Cleveland: Downtown: John Hartness Brown Buildings / Euclid Grand
Can anyone tell me the developer/owner of the Hartness Buildings? I want to contact the owner to set up a community service project to clean it up a bit (I am a City Year alumni and am sick of seeing the City Year logo surrounded by dirt and vacancy at 1015 Euclid). I checked the Cleveland Zoning GIS and it says it's owned by 3M, LLC., but I cannot find anything about them online. Thanks!

^I think it's pretty awesome they're reusing those arches and the art from the old building.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
If you want to close both roads... All you really need is a bus turn around loop. It wouldn't have to be as big or dumb as having both Ontario and Superior open... it wouldn't be open to any other traffic... it wouldn't have to circumnavigate an entire plaza just to make a U-turn, people can walk the extra 400 feet, especially if there is a nice plaza with a coffee shop or whatever instead of rivers of asphalt to hinder them. You can also connect the proposed bus loop with a nice bus transit station (possibly even connected to Tower City), so that people waiting for the bus don't have to be out in the rain, or on all corners of the street or what-have-you. Leaves the rest of the Square open to complete prettiness. Or: Build a bus terminal on the giant parking lot next to 55 Public Square... literally quite large, and dignified, and prettiful and such. Have the bus entrance/exit off of W. 3rd. and make the Superior and W. 6th facing side retail. On top of that place a 5 story parking garage. On top of that place GCRTA HQ and about 20 stories of office space/mixed used/condos/whatever floats your boat. Call it: The Awesome Building, and free up the entire square. Ready go!

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
Hey, anyone know what this is all about? It looked like they're setting up a crane outside the Higbee, that whole portion of Ontario is closed (which made it difficult for me to jaywalk!).... Is it for the Welcome Center or are they doing something to the actual Higbee Building?

Thanks mrclifton, I blanked on this thread.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
I talked to Joe Marrinuchi today, he said CRM will recommence work on the Schofield Building as soon as the Calfee Building is complete, and that due to the economy they had to finish one before they could tackle the other.

I think Siedman does a great job of bringing together the architectural styles seen at the Cleveland Clinic, and thus links the entire Health Corridor together with University Circle.

Plans to build a $50 million apartment complex at Cleveland State University moved ahead Monday when City Council voted to vacate streets on the Chester Avenue side of the campus. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/10/cleveland_to_vacate_streets_fo.html

He wants everyone to know he will surely go through the correct channels in everything, it is a promotional calendar, and acknowledgements will be given for all help.

Lake Erie History
Haha, that's exactly what I said to him! He moreso wants information about sites, and ideas for which sites to use. (I don't think he would mind donated pictures either, it won't be a calendar for sale, just to give away to people. At least as I understand it.)

Lake Erie History
I have a friend who is currently putting together a calendar with the theme: "Lake Erie Highlights." He wants the calendar to contain historical and educational information about Lake Erie (with each month having a subject such as Perry Memorial/Walter Mather/Marblehead/etc.). Does anyone know a good place to get information about these sites, as well as possible pictures for the calendar?

I feel like 1 or 2 small garages would provide a bit more room for another development, even if it's just an open grassy area...

Moving to downtown Cleveland
I think the cheaper the better at least on my end, since I'm a grad student with a plethora of student loans. Do you guys know who to talk to about the E. 4 apartments? The website seems incredibly unhelpful.

Moving to downtown Cleveland
Hey Guys, My friend and I have been looking to move out of the suburbs (Beachwood) and closer to downtown. He currently is in grad school at Case and I am at grad school at CSU. Since he's in anesthesiology school, he needs to be near a highway entrance to get all over to different hospitals. I on the other hand currently take the green line/health line to CSU, and would love to be able to walk it, or just take one bus. We have looked at Statler and Reserve Square (however we were limited to 3 bdrm places at the time as there was a third roommate who has since decided not to move). Now for the crux of the issue, do you guys have any suggestions for us as we're both incredibly busy with grad school and would love some help finding a new place!!

You can always use that bus/rapid pass you already paid for... that's what I do. That and a pair of legs seems to work incredibly well at all times of day!

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
The port is in the optimum place it can ever be right now, since it's at the precipice of the river, the lake, and the tracks. I don't see any reason to move it to a less convenient location. On the other hand, Cleveland does have lakefront outside of the WHD and Flats... In fact, I think Lake Erie may even be pretty large! Why can't they redevelop Lakeside and E. 12-E. 26 area. Get the college crowd, and locate the housing closer to the CBD? I dont think WKYC and the FBI need little one story buildings on our "lakefront" (yes I know there is an airport in front of it, but maybe people in high rises thing decrepit airports are more fun than ports). Sorry to get away from FEB in this post.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
^^ I think our port is much more important than a few high-end apartments. High-end apartments can be built throughout the city. The port can really only be in one place. I think our port is a lot more important for business than FEB, and I think every other major port city would choose their port over apartments as well. I lived in Miami for 5 years, you can see and hear the port's activity from every high rise on the beachfront... doesn't hurt a bit.. in fact, you can physically watch the money pull into port :)
