  1. I'm not sure exactly where Phase II will be (since to me it seems they're using all their land on surface lots in Phase I with no room for a Phase II, but I don't see any problems with the Port Authority taking over the responsibilities the rest of the city has neglected. Their operations won't be off port land except for the possibility of replacing the river bulkheads. I'd imagine FEB would be very happy with the concept of having their property not falling into the river, but that's just me.
  2. This is the best news I've heard in a long time. I studied in Guangzhou and it'd definitely a place with new money. More in tune with our shores however, I studied water resource management there, and they talked about the Great Lakes so Cleveland should already be on their radar! If they come and visit, they'll immediately fall in love with our "blue" skies and "blue" lake... the pollution and smog in Guangzhou made LA look like Yosemite.
  3. Haha, I wasn't necessarily saying it was a bad thing, just found it interesting. In fact, it seems quite brilliant to put someone with a lot of experience in tourism at the head of a tourist trap... Maybe the aquarium will actually work out! Ont he other hand, I hope they find a good staff with knowledge of aquariums and the animals, because I don't want Cleveland having a "Miami Seaquarium" (aka, terribly run aquarium that puts the owner's pocket before both the guests and the animals)
  4. http://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/index.ssf/2011/09/positively_clevelands_tami_las.html Found this on Cleveland.com, interesting concept to but a tourism bureau expert in charge of an aquarium...
  5. I think I would have to agree with you since they haven't posted job openings yet. Unless they're planning on just hiring people from other aquariums, it will take a while to train all those divers since you have to be AAUS authorized. Not sure where in Cleveland such training is even available, I got mine at the University of Miami :|. I suppose it doesn't matter how soon it opens as long as they don't rush it, since they've out-competed Cleveland Aquarium LLC... at least offer us a comparable product.
  6. I didn't know that about the rewards program, I thought the rewards was going to be the Horseshoe Rewards program used throughout Caesar's, what restaurants does that entail (E.4, WHD, etc.)? A racetrack downtown as part of phase II would be sweet, maybe they could have seahorse races in the river! :-)

No idea, seems to have vanished though, looked like the same kind of thing. It seems to me www.yourchangingcleveland.com is going the same way, hasn't been updated since it debuted aside from the twitter feed, and no one seems to post anything pertinent anyway... If Digiknow was running that site, it seems they didn't connect it well to the city of Cleveland government, either that or it just wasn't publicized. Hopefully we can try again with Ideascale (there's an app for that!)
  8. As I understand it, the temporary casino has been ok'd by the government to stay a permanent casino, which would make the gerbil tube permanent as well. Now whether or not a phase II ever sees fruition, I personally doubt it, but they said it will happen, just not as soon as the ballot said it would (ironic since I think we all voted for the thing on the ballot, not some horrendous alternative).

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this on any other forum, but I thought this the best place for it. I came across the IdeaScale software not too long ago and feel like Cleveland should really use it. It's apparently free for governments, and has been used by cities such as Austin and even the White House. Check it out at http://ideascale.com It's like an UrbanOhio forum where the information and ideas we come up with go straight to the city of Cleveland where they can be amended, commented upon, and gain or lose popularity by us (the public)... all for the benefit of Cleveland. Yay Innovation!
  10. I was actually looking at an apartment at Reserve Square today, the West building is apartments, and the 14-23 of the East building is apartments. Wouldn't it be incredible to leave through that rotunda every morning were it the lobby? On the other hand, I've always thought the rotunda clashed a lot with the brutalist tower....
  11. From the aforementioned Cleveland Area History article on demolished buildings on Euclid Ave: "6611 Euclid, the tall industrial building standing here next to the Dunham Tavern, provides real context for the museum. It illustrates how the city grew up around this tavern, and the level of development threats faced by it. It hints at how close the tavern might have come to being demolished itself. This historic structure, 6611 Euclid Avenue, was condemned on May 7. Do we want another vacant lot, or do we want something that contributes significantly to the Dunham Tavern Museum? It's the last of the taller structures of its type along Euclid Avenue, between East 55th and East 105th Streets. Once it is gone, this context will be lost forever. The building is owned by the RTA - in other words, us. We need to make the right decision here." In tandem with what Mr. Busta-Peck mentions about the juxtaposition of 6611 Euclid and Dunham Tavern, wouldn't it be interesting if we could develop 6611 Euclid into a Museum of Industry, or related idea? Allow this building to continue to represent what was Cleveland in the same manner Dunham Tavern represents an earlier era in Cleveland's history. Two neighboring monuments of and to the city of Cleveland. By the way, I'm not sure if I took too much of that article, or if this is the correct place for this post, if I blundered on either, please let me know so I don't do it again! Thanks!
  12. Anyone know when hiring will commence/if they need an out-of-work (slightly misplaced) marine biologist specializing in tropical marine ecology? I come with AAUS authorization and a sincere love of Cleveland too!!!!
  13. I've found it interesting that no one has mentioned an above ground pedestrian bridge instead of walkway. Granted, this is Cleveland so people don't like having to go outside in the winter, but it does the trick of allowing pedestrians free passage over Ontario, while allowing for a smaller footprint (and presumably a lot cheaper). When I was in Vegas I found the pedestrian bridges there very helpful when crossing the streets, but since they were only bridges (not covered walkways), I still felt like I was outside and in a city, not in a building secluded from a city. If we want to maximize the casino's connection to the rest of downtown, a simple bridge from sidewalk to sidewalk seems a lot more connected to the city than a walkway taking individuals straight from inside the garage to inside the casino. It also does the nice trick of not defacing one of the most famous buildings in Cleveland.
  14. As a recent immigrant from Miami, I suppose casinos in the Midwest can be incredibly different from casinos in Florida, however when we went to the Hard Rock Casino in Ft. Lauderdale, it was not only to gamble, but also to walk around the surrounding commercial strip, whether it be a nice dinner, trip to the comedy club, or other activity. I'm probably an idealist here, but if Tower City were to be redeveloped with some more notable stores and restaurants, and given the close proximity of E. 4, I can see the downtown casino as just one stop in a great fun-filled night.
