Definitely didn't cost votes. Ohioans were overwhelmingly against this. Anyone who supported it (both in his party and citizens of Ohio) won't vote for his Democratic challenger anyway. Campaign contributions are questionable for the same reason. It's more likely he lost some money with the veto than votes, but ultimately the folks who funded his campaign would rather see him get another term than any Democrat. So again, I don't think it took much courage to veto a bill that Ohioans wanted vetoed. The people he ticked off will vote for him anyway.

You somewhat wrote out my point... Because he has done some pretty unpopular things across party lines, he gets a "pat on the back" editorial for doing something that wouldn't have even made it past the House with previous administrations. Perhaps a very inappropriate comparison - You don't congratulate a serial killer for sparing one life.

Glad he vetoed the bill... But an editorial from the PD congratulating him? http://mildlyrelevantthoughts.com/2011/07/governor-kasich-bar-set-at-historic-low-by-the-plain-dealer/ via joebaur.com. I don't think it takes a great leader to make an obvious, non-partisan call... But that's just me!

Excuse my expletive deleted language, but I'm pretty f-ing excited to see this area when it's all said and done!

    Absolutely! The more the merrier.

Thought I'd share this episode of Mildly Relevant News covering Governor Kasich's budget... http://mildlyrelevantthoughts.com/2011/07/governor-john-kasichs-ohio-of-misfit-toys/ Saw a nice clip of Great American Cunningham talking about the street car... Might have to use that for the next one!

I didn't originally include bikes, because there's already the amazing Cleveland Critical Mass and you can't drink and bike anymore than you can drink and drive. I think CCM already shows off how accessible Cleveland is via bike. I hope the RTA Bar Crawl shows how accessible Cleveland is with nothing other than RTA and your own two feet! I was, of course, planning on posting at CCM and inviting them for the "ride."

That would explain why I didn't see it. I did my search earlier in the day to Tremont, not at night. I think I'm going to be going with Murray Hill's reverse route, cutting Kamms. I like the idea of starting small. If it's successful, we can either include more 'hoods or focus on other areas. Did we all join the Facebook group? Should be getting a design for the event tomorrow. Perhaps I can post a flier on here that you all can spread around your respective neighborhoods?

Thanks for the info! I used google maps to get times on all routes. I remember thinking 86 didn't look direct, but it said it was slightly faster than using Lorain for some reason. I did a search of Ohio city to Tremont on a Saturday and it didn't look like there were any convenient routes. I think I noticed that the 81 is a convenient route on the weekday, but google maps didn't suggest it on my hypothetical Saturday test. I'm on my phone now, but will do more searching later!

Is there a spot for general parking at University Circle? I'm only familiar with various museum lots. If we nixed Kamms Corner, Ohio City has that parking lot by Great Lakes with plenty of street parking available and might make a good starting point. But now I'm thinking that perhaps Ohio City would be the most "happening" spot to end the night. I guess it depends how many will stay out drinking or call it quits as soon as we get to the end. If so, thought it might make sense to include a coffee place at the end, for folks looking to sober up. Just a thought. Creating the FB page now... I planned on sending updates with my phone throughout and hoped others would, too. I've been in touch with RTA. They can't get involved officially. But I'm in touch with someone who works with city council who said he knows someone that might be able to help with RTA if we get a big enough following.

Apologies for the late reply! I stopped receiving notifications for some reason... Anywho! Here's the route I had in mind. The main neighborhoods it passes up on are Tremont and Collinwood. But unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a great way to get there via RTA on a Saturday. So here we go! Start at Kamm's Corner. Take 86 bus to the Westpark Station, Red Line to W65th station and walk up to D-Shoreway. (36 minutes) 26 bus to W. 25th, walk down to Ohio City. (16 minutes) Take 81/35/22/Red Line to E. 4th. (10/10/14 or 14 minutes) Waterfront Line to Shaker Square (20 minutes) Walk to Larchmere (5 minutes) 48/48A bus to Adelbert and Murray Hill (13 minutes) Walk to University Circle Red Line back to start Thoughts? Thoughts on number of bars per neighborhood? I would also like 1-2 people at the start of the group and 1-2 people at the back of the group with smart phones, so they can keep an eye on upcoming buses/trains. Nothing's set in stone, but this just seemed to be the most efficient and make the most sense. Also looking at the last weekend of August, Saturday the 27th. Cheers! Joe

Thanks! I have a suggested route and working on a date. Sometime in August!

Great! Have a charity in mind? You're Little Italy, right? That was on my "proposed" route. Unfortunately not every neighborhood is connected very well on the weekend, but I think it'll be fun!

Thanks! I'll be posting updates on here. Still need thoughts on a charity. Is there a group that pays for RTA passes for low-income folks?
  16. Just start a new thread in the UrbanBar forum. Murray Hill will most likely pick it up for the Cleveland Events thread. Done and done! http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26019.new.html#new

I've been thinking about start a RTA Bar Crawl to promote living in Cleveland proper, using public transit and somehow benefit a charity. But first I thought I should have a trial RTA day. That was this: http://mildlyrelevantthoughts.com/2011/06/rta-day-and-the-ensuing-bar-crawl/ After talking with some fellow Clevelanders, I'm confident an RTA bar crawl would be successful. We're still in the early stages, but I wanted to start a thread just to garner interest. I sent out a potential route to a brewery blogger for feedback and I have a graphic designer creating a flier and map. Still looking for suggestion on a charity in Cleveland. My thought is something that people can see the benefits immediately. Thoughts? Looking at having this sometime in August. Let me know if you have any questions! Cheers, Joe
  18. I've probably had to kick you off a court! I played in the league that started at 4, haha.
  19. Not sure what the rules are here for posting one's own material... So I won't unless I'm told it's cool! But basically I did a write up on my RTA Day Saturday. And at the end, I talk about how I'm planning an RTA Bar Crawl to promote living in CLE proper, using transit and benefit a charity. Thought some UO folk would be interested in that.
  20. I met Valerie at Yellowcake. There's also a nice article about her and her plans in a supplement to this month's Cleveland Magazine. Long story short, Yellowcake is a true-to-the-word pop-up shop. She told us the same thing that's in the article about her. She did a pop-up in Gordon Square and now Ohio City to see where she wants to land permanently. She's really an awesome gal!
  21. Thanks for the info! Sounds like we've got a ways to go.
  22. Awesome! Anything else to do besides make a connection and eat at the Rapid? Hope other businesses start popping up around the Rapid in East CLE!
  23. I saw an interview where one of the head honchos (not the woman) said all of the designs are theirs and they're stitched in Chicago. He added that he'd have them stitched in Cleveland if we had such a business.
  24. What restaurant is that? I just looked on Google Maps and nothing really popped up. I haven't done any East Cleveland-ing to speak of, so I'm very unfamiliar with this part of town!
  25. Thank you for sharing your old photo tour! Random question - do buses come up to the Windmere station? I noticed a lot of the connections to get to Collinwood on the weekend involve taking the Red Line out there then a bus up to Collinwood. And thank you for sharing the expansion news. Would love to see more in the future, but at least there's something! What's the update on moving the one station to Little Italy?
